Accredited Drug Testing provides comprehensive hair follicle drug tests in Lindenau, Texas. When in need of either a hair drug or alcohol test, Accredited Drug Testing offers specialized hair testing services available in all cities throughout the nation. Typically, 1.5 to 2 inches of hair from the head or body are necessary for accurate analysis. Hair tests can identify drugs, alcohol/ETG, or offer other customized testing options.

In recent times, the procedure for drug testing has evolved to increasingly feature hair follicle tests. A growing number of employers, courts, and Substance Abuse professionals prefer hair drug tests over standard urine tests. Employers embracing zero-tolerance drug policies, courts, and probationary individuals utilize these tests. The primary advantage of hair follicle tests lies in their extended detection window, typically up to 90 days, with observed collection that reduces tampering, whereas urine tests remain the best choice for identifying recent drug use within 5 days.

What it is, How it works

Hair analysis has become recognized as an effective means for identifying drug and alcohol consumption. Hair offers an extended record of substance use by encapsulating biomarkers within the fibers of the developing hair strand. When sampling hair near the scalp, it can provide approximately a 3-month detection period for alcohol and drugs. Hair is straightforward to collect, challenging to tamper with, and convenient to transport.

A hair sample measuring 1.5 inches and approximately 200 strands in thickness (around the size of a #2 pencil) closest to the scalp will provide 100mg, which is the preferred sample size for analysis. For EtG, additional testing, and/or panels exceeding 10, a specimen of 150mg is advisable. It’s suggested to weigh the sample with a jeweler's scale. If scalp hair is not available, an equivalent quantity of body hair may be used. When we mention head hair, we mean scalp hair exclusively. Body hair pertains to all other hair types (facial, axillary, etc.).

Process Overview

The four primary steps in the lab handling of a drug test result are Accessioning, Screening, Extraction, and Confirmation.

Accessioning involves initial incorporation of a sample into a lab’s workflow. This includes ensuring the sample was sealed and shipped aptly, assigning a random LAN (Laboratory Accessioning Number), and finishing any other data entry not handled by an electronic chain of custody system.

Screening conducts an initial rapid assessment for drug substances. While Screening is an affordable method to exclude drug usage in most cases, a positive screen must be verified for court acceptance. Samples that are likely positive during Screening require subsequent confirmation.

If a sample appears positive in the Screening phase, additional hair is taken from the original specimen to prepare for Extraction. In this stage, drug compounds are stripped from hair at significantly lower concentrations than in other methods (e.g., urine or oral fluid), rendering hair drug testing one of the most complex methodologies to execute.

Verification of any positive screening result is achieved via GC/MS, GC/MS/MS, or LC/MS/MS. Before confirmation, all samples that are preliminarily positive are cleaned as necessary. The comprehensive lab procedure from Accessioning to Confirmation is evaluated under both the CAP (College of American Pathologists) Hair classification and ISO / IEC 17025 standards certification.

Advantages of hair drug testing:

  • Extended detection period: Hair drug tests can identify drug usage for up to 90 days, relative to urine tests which have a briefer detection span.
  • Hard to falsify: It is very challenging to deceive a hair drug test, resulting in more precise outcomes.
  • Reveals historical patterns: It can outline a timeline of drug consumption over time, beyond just recent use.

Limitations:

  • Incapable of detecting recent use: Drugs take roughly 5-7 days to become apparent in hair.
  • Expense: Hair drug tests tend to be pricier than other drug testing methods.
  • Result variability: Factors like hair color and individual hair growth differences can influence drug metabolite concentrations in hair.

Note: While commonly dubbed "hair follicle tests", the test itself examines the hair strand rather than the follicle under the scalp

Why Hair Follicle Testing Beats Urine Testing

In Lindenau, TX, hair follicle testing surpasses urine testing by offering a longer detection period and nearly foolproof reliability. While urine tests capture recent drug use, hair follicle tests provide a broader picture by identifying drug usage over several months. This makes them ideal for employers who maintain robust no-drug policies.

Extended Detection Window

With a remarkable ability to detect drug use over up to 90 days, hair follicle tests in Lindenau, TX give employers a comprehensive overview of an individual's substance use history. This extended detection window aids in informed decision-making by showcasing long-term behavior rather than isolated incidents.

Frequently Asked Questions

A hair follicle drug test analyzes a small sample of hair to detect a history of drug use over time. Because drug metabolites are incorporated into hair as it grows, this method can show patterns of use instead of just recent exposure. It is frequently used for legal and court requirements, long-term monitoring, and high-trust workforce screening.
Standard hair drug testing typically reflects drug use over approximately a 90-day period, based on the length of hair collected at the time of testing. Longer hair can sometimes reflect a longer time frame, and extremely short hair can reduce that window.
Hair drug testing commonly screens for marijuana/THC, cocaine, opiates/opioids, amphetamines/methamphetamines, and PCP. In many cases, additional expanded panels may be requested to include other substances.
Yes. If the donor's head hair is too short or unavailable, body hair may be collected as an alternative. The collector will document the source of the sample. This allows testing even for individuals with recently cut or shaved head hair.
Yes. Hair drug testing is commonly used in court, probation, custody, and compliance matters because the collection process follows a documented chain of custody and the analysis is performed by a certified laboratory. Results are provided in a form that can be reviewed by legal and administrative authorities.
Yes. Individuals, parents, attorneys, employers, and probation programs can all request hair drug testing. A doctor's order is not required. Results are confidential and released only to the authorized requesting party.
Hair testing provides a longer look-back period than urine testing, making it useful when you need to demonstrate ongoing abstinence or identify repeated/recent substance use patterns over time rather than just recent exposure. It is frequently selected for legal, compliance, and custody-related documentation.
A small section of hair is cut by a trained collector in a discreet, controlled manner. The sample is sealed, documented, and sent to the laboratory under established chain-of-custody procedures so that the results can be defended if they are ever challenged.
