In Kerrville, Texas, Accredited Drug Testing offers full-spectrum hair follicle drug tests. If seeking a hair drug or alcohol evaluation, Accredited Drug Testing is the go-to expert with centers across various cities in the nation, equipped to conduct hair assessments. Hair measuring 1.5 to 2 inches on the head or body is usually sufficient. Hair tests can screen for drugs, alcohol/ETG or be tailored for specialized evaluations.

Recently, the prevalence of drug testing methods has shifted towards hair follicle tests. A growing number of employers, legal systems, and Substance Abuse experts now request hair drug tests in place of the traditional urine tests. Employers with zero-tolerance policies, judicial systems, and individuals on probation utilize hair follicle tests. The key advantage is a 90-day detection window, collected under supervision, making it extremely difficult to tamper with results. Nevertheless, urinary tests remain superior for detecting substances used within the last five days.

What it is, How it works

Hair analysis is regarded as an effective method for identifying substance use. Hair captures a prolonged history of substances by encapsulating biomarkers within the strands of growing hair. When taken near the scalp, hair can offer a detection span of up to about three months for substances. Collecting hair is straightforward, relatively resistant to tampering, and easy to transport.

A sample measuring 1.5 inches and containing around 200 hair strands (similar to the thickness of a #2 pencil) taken nearest to the scalp will yield 100mg, which is the perfect quantity for analysis and validation. For EtG, additional tests, and/or assessments above 10 panels, 150mg of the sample is advised. It's best to use a jeweler’s scale for measuring the sample. If scalp hair isn't present, a comparable amount of body hair may be used. By head hair, we are specifically referring to scalp hair. Body hair encompasses all other types (e.g., facial, axillary, etc.).

Process Overview

The laboratory procedure for a drug test result includes four primary steps: Accessioning, Screening, Extraction, and Confirmation.

Accessioning is the starting phase of integrating a sample into a lab's system. This step ensures the sample was correctly sealed and sent, assigns a unique LAN (Laboratory Accessioning Number), and inputs any extra data not included in an electronic chain of custody system.

Screening is an initial swift assessment for drug use. While it is a budget-friendly approach to exclude drug use in numerous samples, a positive result must be confirmed to be valid in legal proceedings. Samples that show a presumptive positive in Screening need a follow-up confirmation.

If a sample is flagged as presumptively positive during Screening, additional hair is extracted from the primary sample for Extraction. During this phase, substances are removed from hair at a much lower concentration than other methods (e.g., urine or oral fluid), signifying the complexity of hair drug screening.

The confirmation of any positive screen is performed using GC/MS, GC/MS/MS, or LC/MS/MS. All samples with presumptive positives are cleaned prior to confirmation as required. The whole testing procedure from Accessioning to Confirmation is overseen under the CAP (College of American Pathologists) Hair designation and complies with ISO / IEC 17025 standards.

Advantages of hair drug testing:

  • Extended detection period: Hair drug tests identify substance use for up to 90 days, in contrast to urine tests with a quicker detection period.
  • Hard to compromise: The challenge in compromising a hair drug test makes the outcomes more reliable.
  • Gives historical insight: It reflects a trend of substance use over time, not merely current use.

Limitations:

  • Cannot identify recent use: Drugs take about 5-7 days to become detectable in hair.
  • Expense: Hair drug tests tend to be pricier than other testing options.
  • Result fluctuations: Elements such as hair color and growth differences in individuals can affect drug metabolite levels in hair.

Note: Although often called "hair follicle tests," the test analyzes the hair strand, not the follicle beneath the scalp.

Why Hair Follicle Testing Beats Urine Testing

Hair follicle testing in Kerrville, TX, offers a sophisticated alternative to traditional urine tests, showcasing enhanced detection accuracy. While urine tests detect recent use, hair analysis provides insights into long-term usage patterns, granting a broader substance history evaluation.

Frequently Asked Questions

A hair follicle drug test analyzes a small sample of hair to detect a history of drug use over time. Because drug metabolites are incorporated into hair as it grows, this method can show patterns of use instead of just recent exposure. It is frequently used for legal and court requirements, long-term monitoring, and high-trust workforce screening.
Standard hair drug testing typically reflects drug use over approximately a 90-day period, based on the length of hair collected at the time of testing. Longer hair can sometimes reflect a longer time frame, and extremely short hair can reduce that window.
Hair drug testing commonly screens for marijuana/THC, cocaine, opiates/opioids, amphetamines/methamphetamines, and PCP. In many cases, additional expanded panels may be requested to include other substances.
Yes. If the donor's head hair is too short or unavailable, body hair may be collected as an alternative. The collector will document the source of the sample. This allows testing even for individuals with recently cut or shaved head hair.
Yes. Hair drug testing is commonly used in court, probation, custody, and compliance matters because the collection process follows a documented chain of custody and the analysis is performed by a certified laboratory. Results are provided in a form that can be reviewed by legal and administrative authorities.
Yes. Individuals, parents, attorneys, employers, and probation programs can all request hair drug testing. A doctor's order is not required. Results are confidential and released only to the authorized requesting party.
Hair testing provides a longer look-back period than urine testing, making it useful when you need to demonstrate ongoing abstinence or identify repeated/recent substance use patterns over time rather than just recent exposure. It is frequently selected for legal, compliance, and custody-related documentation.
A small section of hair is cut by a trained collector in a discreet, controlled manner. The sample is sealed, documented, and sent to the laboratory under established chain-of-custody procedures so that the results can be defended if they are ever challenged.
