In Keller, Texas, Accredited Drug Testing offers comprehensive hair follicle drug testing services. Our expertise lies in hair drug and alcohol testing, with facilities available nationwide. To conduct the test effectively, at least 1.5 to 2 inches of hair is required. Hair tests are a method for analyzing drugs, alcohol, ETG, or other tailored options.

Hair follicle drug tests have increasingly become popular in recent years. Many workplace policies now favor these over urine tests. Employers who have strict no-drug policies, along with courts and probation programs, commonly use hair tests. The significant advantage of hair follicle tests includes a longer drug use detection period of up to 90 days, making it difficult to tamper. However, urine tests remain preferred for recent usage within the past 5 days due to their precision.

What it is, How it works

Hair analysis is recognized as an effective method for identifying drug and alcohol usage. Hair offers an extended historical record of substance use by encasing biomarkers within the hair strand’s fibers as it grows. When hair is collected near the scalp, it can yield approximately a 3-month detection timeframe for drugs and alcohol. Collecting hair is straightforward, relatively resistant to tampering, and convenient to transport.

A 1.5-inch portion containing approximately 200 hair strands (roughly the thickness of a #2 pencil) closest to the scalp provides 100mg of hair, which is optimal for analysis and further confirmation. For EtG tests, supplementary tests, and tests above 10 panels, 150mg of the hair sample is advised. We suggest utilizing a jeweler’s scale for weighing the sample. In the absence of scalp hair, an equivalent quantity of body hair can be gathered. The term "head hair" specifically denotes scalp hair. "Body hair" refers to any other hair varieties (facial, axillary, etc.).

Process Overview

The drug testing laboratory procedure encompasses four primary stages: Accessioning, Screening, Extraction, and Confirmation.

Accessioning entails the preliminary processing of a sample into a lab's system. This step ensures the sample was properly sealed and dispatched, assigns a random LAN (Laboratory Accessioning Number), and fills in any missing data entry that isn't covered by an electronic chain of custody system.

Screening consists of an initial swift assessment for drugs of abuse. Although Screening is a cost-efficient method to exclude drug use on most samples, a positive result must undergo confirmation to be admissible in legal contexts. Samples with a presumptive positive screening outcome require confirmation through a secondary analysis.

If a sample shows a presumptive positive outcome during Screening, additional hair is extracted from the initial sample and prepped for Extraction. This phase involves extracting drugs from hair at notably lower concentrations than those found in other methods (like urine or oral fluids), illustrating why hair drug testing is a challenging technique to execute.

The Confirmation phase for any positive screening is performed using GC/MS, GC/MS/MS, or LC/MS/MS methodologies. All samples with presumptive positive results are cleansed before confirmation as necessary. The complete lab process from Accessioning to Confirmation is audited under both the CAP (College of American Pathologists) Hair standard and the ISO / IEC 17025 accreditation.

Advantages of hair drug testing:

  • Extended detection range: Hair drug analyses can reveal drug consumption over a span of up to 90 days, unlike urine tests with a much shorter detection period.
  • High resistance to falsification: Cheating on a hair drug test is exceedingly challenging, leading to more reliable outcomes.
  • Reveals usage patterns: It provides an overview of drug consumption trends over time, rather than just recent use.

Limitations:

  • Incapable of detecting recent consumption: It requires 5-7 days for drugs to become detectable in hair samples.
  • Cost: Hair drug assessments tend to be pricier compared with alternative drug testing methods.
  • Result variability: Elements including hair color and individual hair growth rates can impact drug metabolite concentrations in hair.

Note: While commonly referred to as "hair follicle tests," the analysis actually focuses on the hair strand, not the follicle beneath the scalp.

Why Hair Follicle Testing Beats Urine Testing

In Keller, TX, hair follicle testing surpasses urine testing due to its superior detection capabilities. Unlike traditional urine tests, hair tests provide more accurate insights into long-term drug use, offering a reliable assessment impossible to achieve with other methods. This accuracy signifies an advantage in drug detection procedures.

Extended Detection Window

Extended detection is a key feature of hair follicle testing in Keller, TX. Employers can rely on this method to detect drug use history up to 90 days earlier. Such a comprehensive window aids in understanding an individual’s substance use over a longer period, giving valuable insights into their patterns.

Frequently Asked Questions

A hair follicle drug test analyzes a small sample of hair to detect a history of drug use over time. Because drug metabolites are incorporated into hair as it grows, this method can show patterns of use instead of just recent exposure. It is frequently used for legal and court requirements, long-term monitoring, and high-trust workforce screening.
Standard hair drug testing typically reflects drug use over approximately a 90-day period, based on the length of hair collected at the time of testing. Longer hair can sometimes reflect a longer time frame, and extremely short hair can reduce that window.
Hair drug testing commonly screens for marijuana/THC, cocaine, opiates/opioids, amphetamines/methamphetamines, and PCP. In many cases, additional expanded panels may be requested to include other substances.
Yes. If the donor's head hair is too short or unavailable, body hair may be collected as an alternative. The collector will document the source of the sample. This allows testing even for individuals with recently cut or shaved head hair.
Yes. Hair drug testing is commonly used in court, probation, custody, and compliance matters because the collection process follows a documented chain of custody and the analysis is performed by a certified laboratory. Results are provided in a form that can be reviewed by legal and administrative authorities.
Yes. Individuals, parents, attorneys, employers, and probation programs can all request hair drug testing. A doctor's order is not required. Results are confidential and released only to the authorized requesting party.
Hair testing provides a longer look-back period than urine testing, making it useful when you need to demonstrate ongoing abstinence or identify repeated/recent substance use patterns over time rather than just recent exposure. It is frequently selected for legal, compliance, and custody-related documentation.
A small section of hair is cut by a trained collector in a discreet, controlled manner. The sample is sealed, documented, and sent to the laboratory under established chain-of-custody procedures so that the results can be defended if they are ever challenged.
