Accredited Drug Testing offers comprehensive hair follicle drug screening services in Huntsville, Texas. If you're in need of hair drug or alcohol testing, Accredited Drug Testing specializes in such analyses, with centers available Nationwide to conduct these tests. Typically, 1.5 to 2 inches of hair from the crown of the head or body is required. Hair tests can be customized to check for drugs, alcohol/ETG, or other specific requests.

In recent times, hair follicle drug testing is more commonly employed for assessing drug use. Employers, legal systems, and substance abuse counselors often mandate it instead of traditional urine tests. Hair follicle tests cater to employers with strict drug policies, judicial bodies, and those under probation. A significant advantage is its extended detection span, reaching up to 90 days, with samples collected under observation, making them hard to falsify. Nevertheless, urine testing remains precise within the first 5-day window.

What it is, How it works

Hair testing is recognized as an effective method for identifying the consumption of drugs and alcohol. It offers a comprehensive history of substance use by capturing biomarkers within the fibers of the growing hair. When obtained near the scalp, hair can reveal drug and alcohol use for up to around three months. Hair collection is straightforward, challenging to tamper with, and conveniently transportable.

A sample of 1.5 inches, comprising about 200 hair strands (approximately the diameter of a #2 pencil) nearest to the scalp yields 100mg, ideal for screening and confirmation. For tests involving EtG, add-ons, or over 10 panels, 150mg of hair is preferred. It's advisable to weigh the hair on a jeweler’s scale. If scalp hair cannot be used, the same quantity of body hair can be obtained. When referring to head hair, it indicates only scalp hair. Body hair includes all other hair varieties (facial, axillary, etc.).

Process Overview

The laboratory processing of a drug test result involves four key stages: Accessioning, Screening, Extraction, and Confirmation.

Accessioning is the initial step of processing a sample into the lab's system, ensuring the sample was correctly sealed and shipped, assigning a random LAN (Laboratory Accessioning Number), and completing any supplementary data entry not captured through an electronic chain of custody system.

Screening involves a preliminary rapid assessment for drugs of abuse. While it’s a cost-efficient way to exclude drug use in most samples, a positive screen must be verified to be court-acceptable. Samples presumed positive in Screening require a subsequent confirmation.

If a sample is presumed positive during Screening, additional hair is extracted from the original sample and readied for Extraction. During Extraction, drugs are isolated from hair at significantly lower concentrations compared to other methods (such as urine or oral fluid), which makes hair drug testing the most challenging method to conduct.

Positive results from Screening undergo Confirmation using GC/MS, GC/MS/MS, or LC/MS/MS. All samples presumed positive are washed before confirmation as needed. The complete laboratory process from Accessioning to Confirmation is scrutinized under both the CAP (College of American Pathologists) Hair designation and accredited to ISO / IEC 17025 standards.

Advantages of hair drug testing:

  • Extended detection period: Hair drug tests can reveal drug use for up to 90 days, in contrast to urine tests which have a shorter detection timeframe.
  • Challenging to falsify: It’s considerably difficult to deceive a hair drug test, enhancing result accuracy.
  • Offers historical insight: It can display a pattern of drug usage over time, beyond just recent use.

Limitations:

  • Incapable of detecting recent use: It requires approximately 5-7 days for drugs to be traceable in hair.
  • Expense: Hair drug tests are typically pricier than other drug testing techniques.
  • Result variation: Factors such as hair color and personal hair growth differences can influence the concentration of drug metabolites in the hair.

Note: Though frequently referred to as "hair follicle tests", the test in fact examines the hair strand and not the follicle beneath the scalp

Why Hair Follicle Testing Beats Urine Testing

In Huntsville, TX, hair follicle testing offers significant advantages over urine testing. Its ability to detect a wider range of drugs with greater accuracy makes it a superior choice. Frequently Asked Questions

A hair follicle drug test analyzes a small sample of hair to detect a history of drug use over time. Because drug metabolites are incorporated into hair as it grows, this method can show patterns of use instead of just recent exposure. It is frequently used for legal and court requirements, long-term monitoring, and high-trust workforce screening.
Standard hair drug testing typically reflects drug use over approximately a 90-day period, based on the length of hair collected at the time of testing. Longer hair can sometimes reflect a longer time frame, and extremely short hair can reduce that window.
Hair drug testing commonly screens for marijuana/THC, cocaine, opiates/opioids, amphetamines/methamphetamines, and PCP. In many cases, additional expanded panels may be requested to include other substances.
Yes. If the donor's head hair is too short or unavailable, body hair may be collected as an alternative. The collector will document the source of the sample. This allows testing even for individuals with recently cut or shaved head hair.
Yes. Hair drug testing is commonly used in court, probation, custody, and compliance matters because the collection process follows a documented chain of custody and the analysis is performed by a certified laboratory. Results are provided in a form that can be reviewed by legal and administrative authorities.
Yes. Individuals, parents, attorneys, employers, and probation programs can all request hair drug testing. A doctor's order is not required. Results are confidential and released only to the authorized requesting party.
Hair testing provides a longer look-back period than urine testing, making it useful when you need to demonstrate ongoing abstinence or identify repeated/recent substance use patterns over time rather than just recent exposure. It is frequently selected for legal, compliance, and custody-related documentation.
A small section of hair is cut by a trained collector in a discreet, controlled manner. The sample is sealed, documented, and sent to the laboratory under established chain-of-custody procedures so that the results can be defended if they are ever challenged.
