Accredited Drug Testing offers extensive hair follicle drug testing services in Fort Worth, Texas. For those seeking drug or alcohol tests via hair samples, we are experts in this field and have facilities across the Nation that conduct these tests. Ideally, 1.5 to 2 inches of hair from your head or body are required. Hair analyses can detect drugs, alcohol/ETG, or other specialized options.

Recently, hair follicle drug tests have become more common for drug screening. This method is favored by many employers, courts, and substance abuse specialists over the traditional urine test. Employers with zero-tolerance policies, courts, and probation officers prefer it for its extended detection period of up to 90 days, secure collection, and difficulty to tamper with. Nevertheless, urine tests remain most effective for identifying recent drug use within 5 days.

What it is, How it works

Hair assessments have emerged as an effective means for uncovering drug and alcohol consumption. Hair portrays an extended narrative of alcohol and drug intake by embedding biomarkers within the evolving hair strands. When clipped near the scalp, hair can confer nearly a 3-month timeframe for alcohol and drug detection. Hair collection is straightforward, somewhat resistant to tampering, and conveniently shippable.

A 1.5-inch segment comprising around 200 hair strands (approximately matching the girth of a #2 pencil) nearest to the scalp yields 100mg of hair, which is deemed the optimal amount for initial analysis and verification. For EtG, additional tests, and/or assessments exceeding 10 panels, 150mg of the sample is suggested. Utilizing a jeweler’s scale for measuring the specimen is advisable. Should scalp hair be scarce, an equivalent amount of body hair is acceptable. In referencing head hair, we specifically mean scalp hair. Body hair pertains to all other hair types (facial, axillary, etc.).

Process Overview

The four pivotal stages in the lab processing of a drug test are Accessioning, Screening, Extraction, and Confirmation.

Accessioning denotes the preliminary treatment of a specimen in the lab's database. This process includes confirming the correct sealing and shipping of the sample, assigning an arbitrary LAN (Laboratory Accessioning Number), and filling in any supplementary details absent from an electronic chain of custody record.

Screening signifies a primary assessment for abusive substances. Although Screening economically precludes drug consumption in most samples, a favorable result necessitates confirmation for legal validity. Samples presumptively positive in Screening require further confirmation.

For samples preliminarily positive during Screening, additional hair is extracted from the original sample and readied for Extraction. Herein, drugs are isolated from hair at a markedly lower concentration than through other means (e.g., urine or saliva), attributing to the challenging nature of hair drug screening.

Affirmation of any favorable screening outcomes is achieved through GC/MS, GC/MS/MS, or LC/MS/MS. All samples with presumptive positive indicators are cleansed prior to required confirmations. The total lab process from Accessioning to Confirmation undergoes review adhering to the CAP (College of American Pathologists) Hair directive and ISO / IEC 17025 accreditation standards.

Advantages of hair drug testing:

  • Extended detection span: Hair assessments can trace drug use for 90 days, whereas urine tests have shorter detectability.
  • Hard to manipulate: Tampering with a hair drug test is exceptionally troublesome, elevating result credibility.
  • Chronological data: It conveys a timeline of drug use, offering more than just immediate consumption.

Limitations:

  • Inability to identify recent usage: Drugs become perceptible in hair approximately 5-7 days post-consumption.
  • Expense: Hair drug evaluations often incur greater costs relative to other testing methods.
  • Result inconsistency: Variations like hair color and individual hair growth rates can sway drug metabolite concentration in hair.

Note: Despite often being cited as "hair follicle tests," the examination pertains solely to the hair strand rather than the follicle beneath the scalp.

Why Hair Follicle Testing Beats Urine Testing

Hair follicle testing offers superior detection accuracy and reliability compared to urine testing in Fort Worth, TX. Unlike urine tests, hair samples provide insights into long-term drug use, presenting a comprehensive overview of a person's substance profile. Frequently Asked Questions

A hair follicle drug test analyzes a small sample of hair to detect a history of drug use over time. Because drug metabolites are incorporated into hair as it grows, this method can show patterns of use instead of just recent exposure. It is frequently used for legal and court requirements, long-term monitoring, and high-trust workforce screening.
Standard hair drug testing typically reflects drug use over approximately a 90-day period, based on the length of hair collected at the time of testing. Longer hair can sometimes reflect a longer time frame, and extremely short hair can reduce that window.
Hair drug testing commonly screens for marijuana/THC, cocaine, opiates/opioids, amphetamines/methamphetamines, and PCP. In many cases, additional expanded panels may be requested to include other substances.
Yes. If the donor's head hair is too short or unavailable, body hair may be collected as an alternative. The collector will document the source of the sample. This allows testing even for individuals with recently cut or shaved head hair.
Yes. Hair drug testing is commonly used in court, probation, custody, and compliance matters because the collection process follows a documented chain of custody and the analysis is performed by a certified laboratory. Results are provided in a form that can be reviewed by legal and administrative authorities.
Yes. Individuals, parents, attorneys, employers, and probation programs can all request hair drug testing. A doctor's order is not required. Results are confidential and released only to the authorized requesting party.
Hair testing provides a longer look-back period than urine testing, making it useful when you need to demonstrate ongoing abstinence or identify repeated/recent substance use patterns over time rather than just recent exposure. It is frequently selected for legal, compliance, and custody-related documentation.
A small section of hair is cut by a trained collector in a discreet, controlled manner. The sample is sealed, documented, and sent to the laboratory under established chain-of-custody procedures so that the results can be defended if they are ever challenged.
