Accredited Drug Testing offers comprehensive hair follicle drug tests in Electra, Texas. If you're in need of hair drug or alcohol testing, Accredited Drug Testing is a specialist in hair assessments, and we maintain test centers across all cities Nationwide that conduct hair tests. Generally, having 1.5 to 2 inches of hair on the crown or body proves sufficient. Hair tests can be scrutinized for a variety of drugs, alcohol/ETG, or other custom hair testing needs.

In recent times, the inclusion of hair follicle tests in drug screenings has risen. Many employers, judicial systems, and substance abuse experts now prefer hair drug tests over traditional urine samples. Hair follicle drug assessments are invaluable for employers enforcing zero-tolerance policies on drug use, legal courts, and individuals on probation. A notable advantage of hair follicle testing is its extended drug detection window, typically up to 90 days, collected through an observed process, which is highly resistant to tampering. Nevertheless, urine tests remain the gold standard for detecting drug use within the last 5 days.

What it is, How it works

Hair analysis is increasingly recognized as an effective means of identifying alcohol and drug consumption. Hair captures a comprehensive record of substance use by embedding biomarkers within the fibers of the developing hair shaft. When gathered near the scalp, hair can offer a detection period for alcohol and drugs extending up to around 90 days. Hair collection is straightforward, challenging to tamper with, and simple to transport.

A 1.5-inch segment of about 200 hair strands (equivalent to the circumference of a #2 pencil) nearest to the scalp provides 100mg of hair, which is the optimal amount for analysis and verification. For EtG, additional assessments, and/or examinations exceeding 10 panels, it is advisable to have 150mg of the sample. We suggest using a jeweler’s scale for measuring the sample. Should scalp hair be unavailable, the equivalent volume of body hair can be utilized. When mentioning head hair, reference is to scalp hair exclusively. Body hair includes all other types such as facial and axillary hair.

Process Overview

The core stages involved in laboratory evaluation of a drug test outcome include Accessioning, Screening, Extraction, and Confirmation.

Accessioning encompasses the initiation of a sample’s processing in a lab system. This step verifies that the sample was correctly sealed and dispatched, assigns an arbitrary LAN (Laboratory Accessioning Number), and handles any supplemental data entry absent from an electronic custody system.

Screening conducts a preliminary fast analysis for commonly abused drugs. While Screening is a budget-friendly option to negate drug use in most samples, a positive result needs authentication for court purposes. Any samples that test positive during Screening necessitate further confirmation.

If a sample tests positive during Screening, additional hair is extracted from the original sample and prepped for Extraction. This phase involves the removal of drugs from hair at significantly lower levels than other techniques like urine or oral fluid, which underscores the complexity of performing hair drug analysis.

A confirmatory test for any positive Screen result is performed using GC/MS, GC/MS/MS, or LC/MS/MS. Samples that test presumptively positive are cleansed before confirmation if necessary. The complete laboratory procedure from Accessioning to Confirmation is examined under both the CAP (College of American Pathologists) Hair designation and the ISO / IEC 17025 accreditation standards.

Advantages of hair drug testing:

  • Extended detection span: Hair drug assessments can trace drug usage for up to 90 days, unlike urine tests which have a more limited detection period.
  • Challenging to manipulate: Tampering with a hair drug test is notably difficult, ensuring more precise results.
  • Reveals past usage: This method provides insights into drug consumption patterns over time, beyond just recent usage.

Limitations:

  • Not suitable for recent use: Drugs require roughly 5-7 days to become traceable in hair.
  • Expense: Hair drug tests generally incur higher costs compared to alternative drug testing techniques.
  • Inconsistent outcomes: Variables like hair color and personal differences in hair growth can influence drug metabolite levels in hair.

Note: Although frequently called "hair follicle tests", the analysis specifically examines the hair shaft rather than the follicle beneath the scalp

Frequently Asked Questions

A hair follicle drug test analyzes a small sample of hair to detect a history of drug use over time. Because drug metabolites are incorporated into hair as it grows, this method can show patterns of use instead of just recent exposure. It is frequently used for legal and court requirements, long-term monitoring, and high-trust workforce screening.
Standard hair drug testing typically reflects drug use over approximately a 90-day period, based on the length of hair collected at the time of testing. Longer hair can sometimes reflect a longer time frame, and extremely short hair can reduce that window.
Hair drug testing commonly screens for marijuana/THC, cocaine, opiates/opioids, amphetamines/methamphetamines, and PCP. In many cases, additional expanded panels may be requested to include other substances.
Yes. If the donor's head hair is too short or unavailable, body hair may be collected as an alternative. The collector will document the source of the sample. This allows testing even for individuals with recently cut or shaved head hair.
Yes. Hair drug testing is commonly used in court, probation, custody, and compliance matters because the collection process follows a documented chain of custody and the analysis is performed by a certified laboratory. Results are provided in a form that can be reviewed by legal and administrative authorities.
Yes. Individuals, parents, attorneys, employers, and probation programs can all request hair drug testing. A doctor's order is not required. Results are confidential and released only to the authorized requesting party.
Hair testing provides a longer look-back period than urine testing, making it useful when you need to demonstrate ongoing abstinence or identify repeated/recent substance use patterns over time rather than just recent exposure. It is frequently selected for legal, compliance, and custody-related documentation.
A small section of hair is cut by a trained collector in a discreet, controlled manner. The sample is sealed, documented, and sent to the laboratory under established chain-of-custody procedures so that the results can be defended if they are ever challenged.
