If a hair drug or alcohol test is required, Accredited Drug Testing specializes in these evaluations, with facilities available all over the country. Typically, 1.5 to 2 inches of hair from the head or body is necessary for the test. Hair analysis can detect drugs, alcohol/ETG, and can be tailored for other specific testing needs.
Recently, drug testing methods have increasingly incorporated hair follicle tests. More employers, legal entities, and substance abuse specialists choose hair over urine tests. Employers with strict no-drug policies, courts, and probation subjects favor hair follicle tests. Utilizing hair testing has become recognized as an effective method for identifying drug and alcohol usage. Hair serves as a long-term archive for alcohol and drug presence by embedding biomarkers within the fibers of the growing hair. When obtained near the scalp, hair can yield a detection timeframe of up to approximately three months for alcohol and drugs. Hair is straightforward to collect, challenging to tamper, and uncomplicated to transport.
A sample measuring 1.5 inches consisting of roughly 200 hair strands (similar in size to a #2 pencil) nearest to the scalp provides 100mg of hair, the perfect quantity for screening and confirmation. For EtG, additional screens, and/or tests exceeding 10 panels, 150mg of the sample is advised. It is recommended to measure the sample on a jeweler’s scale. Should scalp hair be unavailable, a comparable quantity of body hair may be acquired. Head hair pertains solely to scalp hair, while body hair includes all other types (facial, axillary, etc.).
Process Overview
The laboratory processing of a drug test result entails four primary stages: Accessioning, Screening, Extraction, and Confirmation.
Accessioning signifies the initial processing of a sample into a lab's framework. It involves confirming the sample was properly sealed and dispatched, assigning a random LAN (Laboratory Accessioning Number), and completing any supplementary data entry absent from an electronic chain of custody system.
Screening encompasses an initial, swift examination for drugs of abuse. Although Screening is a cost-efficient approach to rule out drug use in most samples, a positive screen must be verified to be valid in legal settings. Any samples deemed presumptively positive in Screening necessitate further confirmation.
Should a sample be presumptively positive during the Screening phase, additional hair is extracted from the initial sample and prepared for Extraction. During this phase, drugs are isolated from hair at significantly lower concentrations compared to other methods (e.g., urine or oral fluid), which renders hair drug screening the most challenging methodology to conduct.
Confirmation of a positive screening result is executed through GC/MS, GC/MS/MS, or LC/MS/MS. All presumptive positive samples are cleansed prior to confirmation if required. The entire laboratory procedure from Accessioning to Confirmation undergoes review under both the CAP (College of American Pathologists) Hair designation and the accreditation to ISO / IEC 17025 standards.

Note: Although frequently referred to as "hair follicle tests", the examination analyzes the hair strand and not the follicle beneath the scalp.
