Accredited Drug Testing provides comprehensive hair follicle drug screening services in Coleman, Texas. Our expertise in hair drug and alcohol testing extends citywide nationwide, and our numerous centers are poised to carry out these tests. Typically, 1.5 to 2 inches of hair from the crown or body is necessary. We offer analysis for drugs, alcohol/ETG, and specialized hair testing options.

Recently, drug testing methods have increasingly included hair follicle tests. Employers, courts, and Substance Abuse professionals often prefer them over standard urine tests. Hair follicle drug tests benefit employers with zero-tolerance policies, courts, and probationers. Their main advantage is extended detection for up to 90 days in an observed collection, making cheating nearly impossible. However, urine tests remain most effective for recent drug use within five days.

What it is, How it works

Hair analysis has emerged as an effective method for uncovering drug and alcohol consumption. Hair captures a long-term record of substances by embedding biomarkers within the fibers of the developing hair shaft. When collected near the scalp, hair offers up to about a 3-month detection period for substances. It's straightforward to collect, challenging to tamper with, and simple to ship.

A 1.5-inch segment of approximately 200 hairs (similar to the size of a #2 pencil) nearest to the scalp yields 100mg of hair, the ideal sample size for testing. For EtG, additional tests, and/or panels exceeding 10, 150mg of the sample is suggested. We advise using a jeweler’s scale for precise measurement. If scalp hair isn’t available, an equivalent amount of body hair can be gathered. By head hair, we mean only scalp hair. Body hair covers all other types (e.g., facial, axillary).

Process Overview

The primary stages in the lab analysis of a drug test result include Accessioning, Screening, Extraction, and Confirmation.

Accessioning entails the initial integration of a sample into a lab system. This process checks if the sample was correctly sealed and shipped, assigns a random LAN (Laboratory Accessioning Number), and finalizes any extra data input not covered by an electronic chain of custody system.

Screening is a preliminary check for drugs of abuse. Although Screening is a cost-effective approach to eliminate drug usage in most samples, a positive result requires confirmation to be valid in legal settings. Samples that test presumptively positive in Screening must undergo further verification.

Should a sample test presumptively positive during Screening, more hair is extracted from the original sample and prepared for Extraction. Here, drugs are extracted from hair at significantly lower concentrations than with other methods (e.g., urine or saliva), making hair drug testing the most challenging among methodologies.

Confirmation of any positive screening outcome is carried out using GC/MS, GC/MS/MS, or LC/MS/MS techniques. All presumptive positive samples are washed before confirmation as necessary. The full lab process from Accessioning to Confirmation is scrutinized under both the CAP (College of American Pathologists) Hair designation and the ISO / IEC 17025 accreditation standards.

Advantages of hair drug testing:

  • Extended detection period: Hair drug tests can identify drug use up to 90 days, unlike urine tests which have a shorter detection window.
  • Hard to manipulate: Cheating on a hair drug test is extremely difficult, enhancing accuracy.
  • Delivers historical insight: It provides a pattern of substance use over time rather than just recent consumption.

Limitations:

  • Incapable of detecting immediate use: Drugs take about 5-7 days to show in hair.
  • Expense: Hair drug tests generally cost more than other testing methods.
  • Result variability: Aspects like hair color and individual hair growth differences may impact drug metabolite concentration in hair.

Note: While commonly called "hair follicle tests", the test actually examines the hair shaft not the follicle beneath the scalp.

Why Hair Follicle Testing Beats Urine Testing

In Coleman, TX, hair follicle testing sets a higher standard than urine tests. Hair tests surpass urinary analysis through superior detection accuracy, offering comprehensive insights into long-term substance use. Opting for hair follicle tests over urine provides clearer detection of habitual drug use, reflecting an individual’s history over extended periods.

Unlike traditional urine tests that have a shorter detection window, hair testing demonstrates reliability through consistent and comprehensive results. These tests are preferred by employers and legal entities, delivering confidence in identifying substance use patterns conclusively and avoiding pitfalls common with short-term detection methods.

Extended Detection Window

Our hair follicle testing in Coleman, TX offers an extended detection window, checking substance use over a much longer timeframe—up to 90 days. This advantage grants employers a thorough understanding of an employee or candidate’s drug history, offering valuable insights into consistent drug use behaviors.

Frequently Asked Questions

A hair follicle drug test analyzes a small sample of hair to detect a history of drug use over time. Because drug metabolites are incorporated into hair as it grows, this method can show patterns of use instead of just recent exposure. It is frequently used for legal and court requirements, long-term monitoring, and high-trust workforce screening.
Standard hair drug testing typically reflects drug use over approximately a 90-day period, based on the length of hair collected at the time of testing. Longer hair can sometimes reflect a longer time frame, and extremely short hair can reduce that window.
Hair drug testing commonly screens for marijuana/THC, cocaine, opiates/opioids, amphetamines/methamphetamines, and PCP. In many cases, additional expanded panels may be requested to include other substances.
Yes. If the donor's head hair is too short or unavailable, body hair may be collected as an alternative. The collector will document the source of the sample. This allows testing even for individuals with recently cut or shaved head hair.
Yes. Hair drug testing is commonly used in court, probation, custody, and compliance matters because the collection process follows a documented chain of custody and the analysis is performed by a certified laboratory. Results are provided in a form that can be reviewed by legal and administrative authorities.
Yes. Individuals, parents, attorneys, employers, and probation programs can all request hair drug testing. A doctor's order is not required. Results are confidential and released only to the authorized requesting party.
Hair testing provides a longer look-back period than urine testing, making it useful when you need to demonstrate ongoing abstinence or identify repeated/recent substance use patterns over time rather than just recent exposure. It is frequently selected for legal, compliance, and custody-related documentation.
A small section of hair is cut by a trained collector in a discreet, controlled manner. The sample is sealed, documented, and sent to the laboratory under established chain-of-custody procedures so that the results can be defended if they are ever challenged.
