Accredited Drug Testing provides comprehensive hair follicle drug testing services in Cleburne, Texas. Whether you require a drug or alcohol test via hair, we are experts in this testing type. We operate centers nationwide, capable of conducting hair tests. Generally, 1.5 to 2 inches of hair from the crown or other body parts suffices. Our hair tests can detect drugs, alcohol/ETG, or be catered for specific testing needs.

Recently, hair follicle drug tests are increasingly preferred in drug testing methods. Employers, courts, and addiction specialists often opt for hair tests over common urine tests. This method supports zero-tolerance policies and is used by the judiciary or probation programs. Its main advantage is detecting drug use over an extended period, usually up to 90 days, collected under supervised conditions, making tampering virtually impossible. Still, for recent use within 5 days, urine tests remain the most reliable.

What it is, How it works

Hair testing has gained recognition as a robust method for detecting drug and alcohol use. Hair captures a long-term record of substance consumption by embedding biomarkers within the strands of growing hair. When acquired close to the scalp, hair can offer up to a 3-month detection period for alcohol and related substances. Hair collection is straightforward, relatively tamper-resistant, and convenient for shipment.

A sample of 1.5 inches consisting of about 200 hair strands, similar in thickness to a #2 pencil and clipped near the scalp, provides 100mg of hair, which is optimal for both screening and confirmation. For EtG, additional tests, or 10-panel-plus examinations, 150mg of the sample is advisable. We suggest the use of a jeweler's scale for weighing the specimen. If scalp hair is unavailable, an equivalent amount of body hair may be gathered. "Head hair" refers exclusively to scalp hair, while "body hair" encompasses all other hair types (facial, axillary, etc.).

Process Overview

Laboratory processing of a drug test comprises four key phases: Accessioning, Screening, Extraction, and Confirmation.

Accessioning pertains to the initial processing of a sample into the laboratory system. This involves checking that the sample is properly sealed and shipped, assigning a random LAN (Laboratory Accessioning Number), and completing any additional data entry not handled by an electronic chain of custody system.

Screening constitutes an initial rapid assessment for drugs of abuse. Although Screening is a cost-effective means to eliminate drug use in the bulk of samples, any positive screen requires confirmation for court admissibility. Presumptively positive samples in Screening necessitate further confirmation.

If Screening suggests a positive result, additional hair is extracted from the initial sample in preparation for Extraction. In Extraction, drugs are extracted from hair at a much lower concentration than in other methodologies (e.g., urine or oral fluid), making hair drug screening a challenging methodology to execute.

Confirmation of positive screening outcomes employs GC/MS, GC/MS/MS, or LC/MS/MS techniques. All presumptive positive samples undergo washing as required before confirmation. The comprehensive laboratory process from Accessioning to Confirmation is assessed under the CAP (College of American Pathologists) Hair designation and complies with ISO / IEC 17025 standards.

Advantages of hair drug testing:

  • Long detection window: Hair drug tests can detect drug use for up to 90 days, compared to urine tests, which have a shorter detection window.
  • Difficulty to cheat: It is very difficult to cheat a hair drug test, making the results more accurate.
  • Provides historical data: It can provide a pattern of drug use over a period of time, not just recent use.

Limitations:

  • Cannot detect recent use: It takes approximately 5-7 days for drugs to be detectable in hair.
  • Cost: Hair drug tests are generally more expensive than other drug testing methods.
  • Variations in results: Factors such as hair color and individual variations in hair growth can affect the concentration of drug metabolites in the hair.

Note: While often referred to as "hair follicle tests", the test itself analyzes the hair strand and not the hair follicle under the scalp

Why Hair Follicle Testing Beats Urine Testing

In Cleburne, TX, hair follicle testing outshines urine tests due to its enhanced detection accuracy and reliability. Unlike urine samples that capture recent use, hair follicle tests reveal drug history, offering a more thorough assessment. This comprehensive detection ensures greater confidence in results, making it an ideal choice for employers and regulatory bodies.

The methodology of hair testing makes it less susceptible to rapid fluctuations in drug use, making it superior for long-term substance monitoring. This reliability and depth of insight ensure it remains a preferred choice over urine analyses.

Extended Detection Window

Hair follicle testing in Cleburne, TX provides an extended detection window of up to 90 days, ideal for employers who need insights into an applicant or employee's long-term substance use. This method surpasses other testing forms, offering an in-depth perspective of an individual's drug history.

Frequently Asked Questions

A hair follicle drug test analyzes a small sample of hair to detect a history of drug use over time. Because drug metabolites are incorporated into hair as it grows, this method can show patterns of use instead of just recent exposure. It is frequently used for legal and court requirements, long-term monitoring, and high-trust workforce screening.
Standard hair drug testing typically reflects drug use over approximately a 90-day period, based on the length of hair collected at the time of testing. Longer hair can sometimes reflect a longer time frame, and extremely short hair can reduce that window.
Hair drug testing commonly screens for marijuana/THC, cocaine, opiates/opioids, amphetamines/methamphetamines, and PCP. In many cases, additional expanded panels may be requested to include other substances.
Yes. If the donor's head hair is too short or unavailable, body hair may be collected as an alternative. The collector will document the source of the sample. This allows testing even for individuals with recently cut or shaved head hair.
Yes. Hair drug testing is commonly used in court, probation, custody, and compliance matters because the collection process follows a documented chain of custody and the analysis is performed by a certified laboratory. Results are provided in a form that can be reviewed by legal and administrative authorities.
Yes. Individuals, parents, attorneys, employers, and probation programs can all request hair drug testing. A doctor's order is not required. Results are confidential and released only to the authorized requesting party.
Hair testing provides a longer look-back period than urine testing, making it useful when you need to demonstrate ongoing abstinence or identify repeated/recent substance use patterns over time rather than just recent exposure. It is frequently selected for legal, compliance, and custody-related documentation.
A small section of hair is cut by a trained collector in a discreet, controlled manner. The sample is sealed, documented, and sent to the laboratory under established chain-of-custody procedures so that the results can be defended if they are ever challenged.
