Accredited Drug Testing offers comprehensive hair follicle drug assessments in Buffalo, Texas. Should you require a hair drug or alcohol assessment, we are experts in hair testing. Our centers are located in cities across the nation to facilitate hair tests. Typically, 1.5 to 2 inches of hair from the head or body is necessary. Hair assessments can identify drugs, alcohol/ETG, or other tailored hair options.

Recently, hair follicle drug assessments have become a more common method for drug screening. Various employers, courts, and substance abuse professionals now prefer hair tests over the traditional urine tests. Companies with strict drug policies, courts, and probationary cases often employ hair follicle assessments. The upside of these assessments lies in their extended detection duration, usually up to 90 days, with the collection being supervised which makes manipulation nearly impossible. Yet, when testing for drug use in the past 5 days, urine tests remain the most precise.

What it is, How it works

Hair testing is recognized as an effective method for identifying drug and alcohol consumption. Hair strands capture and retain substance markers, offering a prolonged overview of usage. A nearby-scalp sample can reveal drug and alcohol use within a roughly 90-day period. The collection of hair is straightforward, tampering is challenging, and it is easy to transport.

A 1.5-inch segment consisting of around 200 hair strands (comparable to a #2 pencil thickness) close to the scalp yields approximately 100mg, which is optimal for analysis. For tests such as EtG, add-ons, and those beyond 10 panels, it is preferable to have 150mg. Utilizing a jeweler's scale for weighing is advised. If scalp hair cannot be collected, an equivalent quantity of body hair can be used. By head hair, only scalp hair is implied. Body hair encompasses any other types, such as facial or underarm hair.

Process Overview

There are four critical phases in processing drug test results in the lab: Accessioning, Screening, Extraction, and Confirmation.

Accessioning encompasses the preliminary handling of a specimen within the laboratory system. This step ensures samples are securely sealed and transported, assigns a unique LAN (Laboratory Accessioning Number), and completes outstanding data entry absent from an electronic custody chain.

Screening offers an initial drug usage assessment. Though this method economically rules out drug presence in most samples, any positive screens need confirmation for legal validity. Samples that return a presumptively positive result in Screening necessitate further verification.

If Screening indicates a possible positive, an extra hair portion is extracted and readied for Extraction. This stage involves isolating drugs from hair at concentrations much lower than other methods like urine or saliva tests, marking hair drug assessments as particularly complex.

Confirmation of any presumptive positive involves techniques such as GC/MS, GC/MS/MS, or LC/MS/MS. Preceding confirmation, all positive samples are cleansed as necessary. The entire pathway from Accessioning through Confirmation is scrutinized under the CAP (College of American Pathologists) certification, as well as the ISO / IEC 17025 standards.

Advantages of hair drug testing:

  • Extensive detection period: Hair drug assessments can reveal drug use over three months, whereas urine tests are more limited in timeframe.
  • High resistance to manipulation: The likelihood of tampering with a hair drug test is minimal, enhancing result reliability.
  • Insights on usage trends: Provides insight into drug consumption patterns over time, not merely recent intake.

Limitations:

  • Inability to identify recent ingestion: Drugs require about 5-7 days before becoming traceable in hair.
  • Price: Hair drug evaluation typically incurs higher costs compared to alternative testing options.
  • Result inconsistency: Variables like hair pigment and individual growth differences can influence the concentration of drug metabolites.

Note: Despite often being called "hair follicle tests", the analysis pertains to the hair strand itself rather than the follicle beneath the skin.

Why Hair Follicle Testing Beats Urine Testing

In Buffalo, TX, hair follicle testing stands out compared to urine testing, attributed to its superior accuracy and reliability. Unlike traditional urine tests, hair assessments provide a detailed history of substance use with a broader detection window. Hair tests are less susceptible to tampering, offering dependable outcomes that enforce strict drug-free policies, maintaining workplace integrity.

Extended Detection Window

Employers in Buffalo, TX, benefit from the extended detection period of hair follicle tests, lasting up to 90 days. This capability gives a comprehensive view of an individual's substance use trajectory, helping in the decision-making process. This long-term overview is unmatched by conventional methods.

Tamper-Resistant Testing Method

In Buffalo, TX, hair follicle drug tests dramatically reduce the likelihood of sample tampering. These tests are collected under strict supervision and have innate resistance to manipulation, ensuring that results are credible. This tamper-resistant feature is crucial for maintaining the integrity of drug testing results.

Frequently Asked Questions

A hair follicle drug test analyzes a small sample of hair to detect a history of drug use over time. Because drug metabolites are incorporated into hair as it grows, this method can show patterns of use instead of just recent exposure. It is frequently used for legal and court requirements, long-term monitoring, and high-trust workforce screening.
Standard hair drug testing typically reflects drug use over approximately a 90-day period, based on the length of hair collected at the time of testing. Longer hair can sometimes reflect a longer time frame, and extremely short hair can reduce that window.
Hair drug testing commonly screens for marijuana/THC, cocaine, opiates/opioids, amphetamines/methamphetamines, and PCP. In many cases, additional expanded panels may be requested to include other substances.
Yes. If the donor's head hair is too short or unavailable, body hair may be collected as an alternative. The collector will document the source of the sample. This allows testing even for individuals with recently cut or shaved head hair.
Yes. Hair drug testing is commonly used in court, probation, custody, and compliance matters because the collection process follows a documented chain of custody and the analysis is performed by a certified laboratory. Results are provided in a form that can be reviewed by legal and administrative authorities.
Yes. Individuals, parents, attorneys, employers, and probation programs can all request hair drug testing. A doctor's order is not required. Results are confidential and released only to the authorized requesting party.
Hair testing provides a longer look-back period than urine testing, making it useful when you need to demonstrate ongoing abstinence or identify repeated/recent substance use patterns over time rather than just recent exposure. It is frequently selected for legal, compliance, and custody-related documentation.
A small section of hair is cut by a trained collector in a discreet, controlled manner. The sample is sealed, documented, and sent to the laboratory under established chain-of-custody procedures so that the results can be defended if they are ever challenged.
