In Brownsville, Texas, Accredited Drug Testing offers comprehensive hair follicle drug testing services. Accredited Drug Testing focuses on hair tests, providing nationwide testing centers capable of performing these assessments if you're in need of a drug or alcohol test via hair samples. Typically, 1.5 to 2 inches of hair on your head or body suffices for the procedure. These evaluations can detect drugs, alcohol/ETG, or offer tailored options based on your requirements.

Recently, the hair follicle method has frequently replaced traditional drug-testing techniques. Increasingly, employers, courts, and substance abuse specialists prefer hair drug tests due to their comprehensive detection timeframe of up to 90 days. With stringent observation during sample collection, it's practically immune to tampering. However, for detecting usage within five days, urine tests maintain superior accuracy.

What it is, How it works

Hair analysis is now acknowledged as a robust method for detecting drug and alcohol consumption. Hair captures a comprehensive history of alcohol and drugs by embedding biomarkers within the hair's fibers as it grows. When gathered near the scalp, hair can furnish up to a roughly 3-month period for detecting alcohol and numerous drugs. Its collection is straightforward, relatively challenging to tamper with, and it is convenient to transport.

A sample measuring 1.5 inches consisting of around 200 hair strands (approximately comparable to a #2 pencil's thickness) nearest to the scalp can yield 100mg of hair, which is the optimal sample size for both screening and confirmation purposes. For EtG, additional testing, and/or evaluations beyond 10 panels, a recommendation of 150mg of the sample is advised. We suggest employing a jeweler’s scale for measuring the sample. Should scalp hair be unavailable, an equivalent amount of body hair may be utilized. References to head hair pertain only to scalp hair. In contrast, body hair encompasses all other types (like facial and axillary hair).

Process Overview

The procedure for processing a drug test result in a laboratory encompasses four fundamental steps: Accessioning, Screening, Extraction, and Confirmation.

Accessioning pertains to the preliminary processing of a specimen into a laboratory's system. This phase includes confirming that the sample was appropriately sealed and delivered, issuing a random LAN (Laboratory Accessioning Number), and executing any additional data entry that an electronic chain of custody system did not cover.

Screening refers to an initial rapid evaluation for drugs of abuse. While Screening presents a cost-effective mechanism for excluding drug use across most samples, a Confirmed positive screen is necessary for court admissibility. Samples displaying presumptive positive results in Screening necessitate a follow-up confirmation.

When a sample shows a presumptive positive in the Screening phase, more hair is extracted from the initial sample and readied for Extraction. In this phase, drugs are extracted from hair at a concentration significantly lower than other methods (e.g., urine or oral fluid), accentuating why hair drug screening is a more arduous methodology to execute.

Confirmation of any positive result from Screening is executed through GC/MS, GC/MS/MS, or LC/MS/MS. Any samples thought presumptively positive are cleansed prior to Confirmation depending on necessity. Each segment of the laboratory process from Accessioning to Confirmation is subject to review under both the CAP (College of American Pathologists) Hair accreditation and the ISO / IEC 17025 standard certifications.

Advantages of hair drug testing:

  • Extended detection duration: Hair drug evaluations can identify drug consumption for up to 90 days, contrary to urine tests which present a briefer detection period.
  • Increased difficulty for manipulation: Cheating a hair drug evaluation is notably difficult, ensuring more precise results.
  • Chronological data provision: It supplies an insight into the drug use profile across time, not just recent consumption.

Limitations:

  • Inability to detect recent consumption: It requires around 5-7 days for substances to become detectable in hair.
  • Expense: Hair drug evaluations tend to attract higher costs compared to alternate drug testing methodologies.
  • Result variabilities: Factors such as hair pigmentation and individual hair growth discrepancies can influence the presence of drug metabolites in hair.

Note: Despite being colloquially termed as "hair follicle tests", the actual analysis is conducted on the hair strand itself, excluding the hair follicle situated beneath the scalp.

Frequently Asked Questions

A hair follicle drug test analyzes a small sample of hair to detect a history of drug use over time. Because drug metabolites are incorporated into hair as it grows, this method can show patterns of use instead of just recent exposure. It is frequently used for legal and court requirements, long-term monitoring, and high-trust workforce screening.
Standard hair drug testing typically reflects drug use over approximately a 90-day period, based on the length of hair collected at the time of testing. Longer hair can sometimes reflect a longer time frame, and extremely short hair can reduce that window.
Hair drug testing commonly screens for marijuana/THC, cocaine, opiates/opioids, amphetamines/methamphetamines, and PCP. In many cases, additional expanded panels may be requested to include other substances.
Yes. If the donor's head hair is too short or unavailable, body hair may be collected as an alternative. The collector will document the source of the sample. This allows testing even for individuals with recently cut or shaved head hair.
Yes. Hair drug testing is commonly used in court, probation, custody, and compliance matters because the collection process follows a documented chain of custody and the analysis is performed by a certified laboratory. Results are provided in a form that can be reviewed by legal and administrative authorities.
Yes. Individuals, parents, attorneys, employers, and probation programs can all request hair drug testing. A doctor's order is not required. Results are confidential and released only to the authorized requesting party.
Hair testing provides a longer look-back period than urine testing, making it useful when you need to demonstrate ongoing abstinence or identify repeated/recent substance use patterns over time rather than just recent exposure. It is frequently selected for legal, compliance, and custody-related documentation.
A small section of hair is cut by a trained collector in a discreet, controlled manner. The sample is sealed, documented, and sent to the laboratory under established chain-of-custody procedures so that the results can be defended if they are ever challenged.
