Accredited Drug Testing provides comprehensive hair follicle drug screenings in Big Spring, Texas. If you're seeking a hair drug or alcohol test, we are hair testing specialists with a network of testing centers across all Nationwide cities, ready to facilitate your needs. Hair measuring 1.5 to 2 inches from your head's crown or body is typically required. Our hair tests can detect drugs, alcohol/ETG, or be tailored for other screening needs.

More recently, hair follicle drug tests have become a preferred method for drug screening. They are increasingly requested by employers, courts, and substance abuse professionals over standard urine tests. Employers who enforce zero-tolerance drug policies, along with courts and those on probation, utilize these tests for their principal advantage: an extended detection period, usually up to 90 days, through a supervised collection process, making it highly secure against cheating. For detecting recent drug use within the past 5 days, though, urine tests remain the most trustworthy.

What it is, How it works

Hair testing has become recognized as an effective instrument for identifying drug and alcohol consumption. Hair captures a prolonged record of alcohol and drug use by embedding biomarkers in the growing hair fibers. When gathered near the scalp, hair can offer up to about a 3-month detection period for alcohol and drugs. Hair is easy to gather, relatively challenging to alter, and convenient to transport.

A 1.5-inch segment of roughly 200 hair strands (comparable to a #2 pencil) nearest to the scalp will yield 100mg of hair, which is optimal for screening and confirmation. For EtG, additional tests, and/or those above 10 panels, 150mg of the sample is suggested. It's advisable to measure the sample with a jeweler’s scale. If scalp hair can't be collected, an equivalent amount of body hair can be used. When mentioning head hair, it specifically refers to scalp hair. Body hair encompasses all other hair types (facial, armpit, etc.).

Process Overview

The laboratory process of a drug test result encompasses four principal steps: Accessioning, Screening, Extraction, and Confirmation.

Accessioning pertains to the initial integration of a sample into the lab's system. This comprises confirming that the sample was correctly sealed and sent, assigning a random LAN (Laboratory Accessioning Number), and completing any extra data input not included by an electronic chain of custody system.

Screening constitutes a preliminary swift assessment for drugs of abuse. Though Screening is a cost-effective approach to dismiss drug usage for most samples, a positive screen requires confirmation for court admissibility. Any samples with a presumptive positive in Screening necessitate a secondary confirmation.

If a sample shows presumptive positivity in the Screening phase, additional hair is taken from the original specimen for Extraction. In this process, drugs are extracted from hair at significantly lower concentrations compared to other methodologies (e.g., urine or oral fluid), which makes hair drug screening the most complex methodology to execute.

Confirmation of any positive screening outcome is executed via GC/MS, GC/MS/MS, or LC/MS/MS. All presumptive positive samples undergo washing before confirmation if needed. The complete lab process from Accessioning to Confirmation is overseen under both the CAP (College of American Pathologists) Hair classification and the accreditation to ISO / IEC 17025 standards.

Advantages of hair drug testing:

  • Extended detection period: Hair drug tests can recognize drug usage for up to 90 days, in contrast to urine tests which have a shorter detection period.
  • Hard to falsify: It's exceedingly difficult to falsify a hair drug test, enhancing the accuracy of results.
  • Offers historical information: It can provide a record of drug use over time, not just recent consumption.

Limitations:

  • Incunable recent detection: It takes around 5-7 days for drugs to be detectable in hair.
  • Expense: Hair drug tests generally incur higher costs than other drug testing methods.
  • Result-dependent variations: Elements like hair color and individual differences in hair growth can influence drug metabolite concentrations within the hair.

Note: Although sometimes termed "hair follicle tests", the analysis targets the hair strand and not the follicle beneath the scalp.

Why Hair Follicle Testing Beats Urine Testing

In Big Spring, TX, hair follicle testing triumphs over urine testing by offering superior detection accuracy. Hair tests are known for their reliability, capturing drug use history over an extended period. This contrasts with urine tests, which are limited in detection time, often missing long-term drug patterns.

Moreover, hair tests are less invasive and eliminate the inconvenience of urine sample collection. Their precision in identifying drug use makes hair follicle tests a more favorable choice, providing clear evidence that supports drug-free workplaces.

Extended Detection Window

At Big Spring, TX, one of the unparalleled advantages of hair follicle testing is its extended detection window. Unlike other testing methods, it can reveal drug use over a period of up to 90 days, presenting a more comprehensive assessment of an individual's history.

This extended detection capability is particularly beneficial for employers, allowing them to see beyond recent usage and assess longer-term behavior. It provides a fuller picture, which is crucial for making informed employment decisions.

Tamper-Resistant Testing Method

Hair follicle testing in Big Spring, TX presents a tamper-resistant approach that ensures the integrity of results. The process of obtaining hair samples significantly reduces the likelihood of sample adulteration, common with other testing methods.

This robust security against tampering means results can be trusted, offering reliable evidence of drug use. Employers can depend on these results to make fair employment decisions, free from concerns about altered or substituted samples.

Frequently Asked Questions

A hair follicle drug test analyzes a small sample of hair to detect a history of drug use over time. Because drug metabolites are incorporated into hair as it grows, this method can show patterns of use instead of just recent exposure. It is frequently used for legal and court requirements, long-term monitoring, and high-trust workforce screening.
Standard hair drug testing typically reflects drug use over approximately a 90-day period, based on the length of hair collected at the time of testing. Longer hair can sometimes reflect a longer time frame, and extremely short hair can reduce that window.
Hair drug testing commonly screens for marijuana/THC, cocaine, opiates/opioids, amphetamines/methamphetamines, and PCP. In many cases, additional expanded panels may be requested to include other substances.
Yes. If the donor's head hair is too short or unavailable, body hair may be collected as an alternative. The collector will document the source of the sample. This allows testing even for individuals with recently cut or shaved head hair.
Yes. Hair drug testing is commonly used in court, probation, custody, and compliance matters because the collection process follows a documented chain of custody and the analysis is performed by a certified laboratory. Results are provided in a form that can be reviewed by legal and administrative authorities.
Yes. Individuals, parents, attorneys, employers, and probation programs can all request hair drug testing. A doctor's order is not required. Results are confidential and released only to the authorized requesting party.
Hair testing provides a longer look-back period than urine testing, making it useful when you need to demonstrate ongoing abstinence or identify repeated/recent substance use patterns over time rather than just recent exposure. It is frequently selected for legal, compliance, and custody-related documentation.
A small section of hair is cut by a trained collector in a discreet, controlled manner. The sample is sealed, documented, and sent to the laboratory under established chain-of-custody procedures so that the results can be defended if they are ever challenged.
