Accredited Drug Testing provides comprehensive hair follicle drug testing services in Big Lake, Texas. Specializing in hair testing for drugs or alcohol, our centers across all U.S. cities can perform these tests. Generally, having 1.5 to 2 inches of hair on the crown or body suffices. Our hair tests check for drugs, alcohol/ETG, or other specific testing needs.

Recently, hair follicle drug tests have gained prominence for drug testing. Employers, courts, and substance abuse experts prefer hair tests over urine tests due to zero-tolerance policies and probation requirements. Hair tests offer a longer detection period of up to 90 days, are observed during collection, and are hard to cheat. However, urine tests remain the most accurate for recent drug use within the past 5 days.

What it is, How it works

Hair analysis is increasingly recognized as an effective method for identifying drug and alcohol consumption. Hair can reveal a long-term history of substance ingestion because the fibers store biomarkers as the hair grows. When hair is sampled near the scalp, it can offer an approximate 3-month detection period for alcohol and other substances. Hair collection is straightforward, challenging to tamper with, and easy to transport.

A 1.5-inch segment of roughly 200 hair strands (comparable in size to a #2 pencil) taken nearest to the scalp provides about 100mg, which is optimal for testing. For EtG, add-ons, and/or assessments over 10 panels, 150mg is advisable. It's best to weigh the hair using a jeweler's scale. If scalp hair isn't available, a similar amount of body hair can be used. When mentioning head hair, we mean only scalp hair. Body hair refers to all other types (facial, axillary, etc.).

Process Overview

The drug testing process in a laboratory encompasses four primary phases: Accessioning, Screening, Extraction, and Confirmation.

Accessioning is about the initial entry of a sample into a lab’s database. This step ensures the sample was properly sealed and dispatched, a random LAN (Laboratory Accessioning Number) is assigned, and any extra data entry not handled by an electronic custody framework is completed.

Screening is an initial assessment for substance abuse. Although Screening is an economical method for excluding drug use in the bulk of samples, any screen indicating presence must be verified to stand in legal contexts. Samples that show presumptive positives in Screening need further confirmation.

Should a sample reveal presumptive positives in Screening, excess hair is extracted from the original specimen and prepared for Extraction. At this stage, drugs are removed from hair at considerably lower concentrations compared to other methods (such as urine or saliva), highlighting the challenge of hair drug screenings.

Confirmation of any hypotheses positives is performed via GC/MS, GC/MS/MS or LC/MS/MS techniques. Each presumptive positive sample is cleansed before confirmation when necessary. The complete lab process from Accessioning to Confirmation undergoes review under both the CAP (College of American Pathologists) Hair standard and the accreditation of ISO/IEC 17025.

Advantages of hair drug testing:

  • Extended detection period: Hair drug screenings can reveal substance use for up to 90 days, unlike urine tests which provide a shorter detection timeframe.
  • Resistance to deceit: Cheating on a hair drug test is extremely difficult, enhancing result accuracy.
  • Historical insight: It reveals drug use trends over time rather than just recent use.

Limitations:

  • Inability to identify recent use: Substances take about 5-7 days to become traceable in hair.
  • Expense: Hair drug tests are typically pricier than other testing methodologies.
  • Variability in outcomes: Factors like hair shade and personal variations in hair growth can impact drug metabolite concentration in hair.

Note: Commonly termed "hair follicle tests", these assessments actually examine the hair, not the follicle beneath the scalp.

Frequently Asked Questions

A hair follicle drug test analyzes a small sample of hair to detect a history of drug use over time. Because drug metabolites are incorporated into hair as it grows, this method can show patterns of use instead of just recent exposure. It is frequently used for legal and court requirements, long-term monitoring, and high-trust workforce screening.
Standard hair drug testing typically reflects drug use over approximately a 90-day period, based on the length of hair collected at the time of testing. Longer hair can sometimes reflect a longer time frame, and extremely short hair can reduce that window.
Hair drug testing commonly screens for marijuana/THC, cocaine, opiates/opioids, amphetamines/methamphetamines, and PCP. In many cases, additional expanded panels may be requested to include other substances.
Yes. If the donor's head hair is too short or unavailable, body hair may be collected as an alternative. The collector will document the source of the sample. This allows testing even for individuals with recently cut or shaved head hair.
Yes. Hair drug testing is commonly used in court, probation, custody, and compliance matters because the collection process follows a documented chain of custody and the analysis is performed by a certified laboratory. Results are provided in a form that can be reviewed by legal and administrative authorities.
Yes. Individuals, parents, attorneys, employers, and probation programs can all request hair drug testing. A doctor's order is not required. Results are confidential and released only to the authorized requesting party.
Hair testing provides a longer look-back period than urine testing, making it useful when you need to demonstrate ongoing abstinence or identify repeated/recent substance use patterns over time rather than just recent exposure. It is frequently selected for legal, compliance, and custody-related documentation.
A small section of hair is cut by a trained collector in a discreet, controlled manner. The sample is sealed, documented, and sent to the laboratory under established chain-of-custody procedures so that the results can be defended if they are ever challenged.
