Accredited Drug Testing offers comprehensive hair follicle drug testing services in Sioux Falls, South Dakota. If a hair drug or alcohol test is needed, Accredited Drug Testing is a specialist in this area, providing testing centers across all cities nationwide for hair testing. Typically, 1.5 to 2 inches of hair from the head or body is required for analysis. These hair tests can detect drugs, alcohol/ETG, and offer other customized testing solutions.
In recent years, hair follicle drug testing became more common for conducting drug tests. Employers, legal courts, and substance abuse experts favor hair drug tests over standard urine tests. Zero-tolerance employers, courts, and individuals on probation use hair follicle tests due to their advantageous longer detection windows, extending up to 90 days, collected under supervision, which are almost impossible to compromise, though urine tests remain most accurate for drug use detected within the past 5 days.

When you're searching for hair drug testing near me or hair drug testing locations, we provide a simple and convenient process to find a drug and alcohol testing location near you that is certified to provide all of your drug and alcohol testing needs.
Hair testing is increasingly recognized as a potent method for identifying drug and alcohol consumption. Hair captures a long-term record of alcohol and drug use by embedding biomarkers within the structure of the developing hair strand. Collected near the scalp, hair offers approximately a 90-day detection window for alcohol and other substances. It's straightforward to collect, relatively hard to tamper with, and simple to transport.
A 1.5-inch snippet of nearly 200 hair strands (similar in thickness to a #2 pencil) nearest to the scalp provides 100mg of hair, which is the perfect sample size for testing and verification. For EtG, additional tests, and/or screenings over 10 panels, 150mg of the sample is advised. It's best to use a jeweler’s scale for weighing the sample. In cases where scalp hair cannot be obtained, an equivalent volume of body hair may be collected. When we mention head hair, we mean only scalp hair. Body hair includes all other hair types (such as facial, axillary, etc.).
Process Overview
There are four primary phases in the lab processing of a drug test result: Accessioning, Screening, Extraction, and Confirmation.
Accessioning is the preliminary process of integrating a sample into a lab’s database. This entails confirming that the sample was properly sealed and shipped, attributing a random LAN (Laboratory Accessioning Number), and fulfilling any remaining data entry not covered by an electronic chain of custody system.
Screening acts as an initial rapid evaluation for substances of abuse. While providing a cost-effective manner to exclude drug use in most samples, a screened positive result needs verification to be valid in legal contexts. Presumptively positive samples in Screening require further confirmation.
If a specimen tests presumptively positive at the Screening phase, additional hair is extracted from the initial sample and readied for Extraction. In this phase, drugs are distilled from hair at a significantly low concentration compared to other techniques (such as urine or oral fluid), which makes hair drug screening the most challenging method to conduct.
Confirmation of positive screening results is done using GC/MS, GC/MS/MS, or LC/MS/MS. Before confirmation, all presumptive positive samples are cleansed as necessary. The entire laboratory process from Accessioning to Confirmation is evaluated under both the CAP (College of American Pathologists) Hair criteria and ISO / IEC 17025 accreditation standards.

The joint meeting of the Society of Hair Testing (SoHT) and the Italian Group of Forensic Toxicologists (GTFI) was organized in Verona, June 8–10, 2022, and hosted by the Legal Medicine team of the Verona University Hospital, directed by Franco Tagliaro together with Federica Bortolotti and Rossella Gottardo.
It served as a prominent platform for knowledge exchange and collaboration, facilitating groundbreaking advancements in hair testing and analysis. In this special issue of Drug Testing and Analysis, we aim to showcase the remarkable manuscripts presented at this significant event, shedding light on the latest research and highlighting the future directions in this field.
Novel Analytical Techniques: The Verona meeting witnessed the unveiling of cutting-edge analytical techniques, offering enhanced sensitivity, selectivity, and accuracy for drug testing. Remarkable advancements in sample preparation, detection, and identification of drug compounds have been presented. The manuscripts in this section presented novel approaches, such as multianalyte methods and on-line preparation which can enable rapid analysis and improve thorough forensic investigations.
Biomarkers and Pharmacokinetics: The identification and validation of reliable biomarkers and pharmacokinetic studies are fundamental aspects of drug testing and analysis. The impact of hair treatments on the oxidation/decomposition of drugs in hair was also explored, as the long-term fate of drugs incorporated in the keratin matrix. Furthermore, the SoHT meeting in Verona featured research on the identification and quantification of alcohol abuse biomarkers, their stability, and their correlation with exposure and other biomarkers.
Forensic Applications and Interpretation: One of the vital objectives of hair testing is its application in forensic investigations and legal proceedings. The SoHT meeting in Verona emphasized the significance of rigorous interpretation of analytical results and the need for standardized protocols. Manuscripts in this section present advancements in forensic toxicology, and have explored the challenges posed by emerging designer drugs and strategies to combat their proliferation. The pitfalls encountered when the exogenous/endogenous nature of a substance is questioned were presented and discussed. The special issue presents also manuscripts that delve into the ethical implications of drug testing in drug facilitated sexual assaults.
Clinical Applications of hair testing are witnessed by the insight on environmental tobacco smoke exposure, assessed by hair analysis in a population of students and the study of in utero-exposure to drugs of abuse through neonatal hair analysis. Exposure to drugs was also important in cases of child abuse/neglect, when the clinical purpose of hair testing merge with its forensic applications.
The legal framework surrounding hair testing and the achievement of guidelines to ensure fairness, accuracy, and confidentiality in drug testing practices have also been discussed, and the SoHT consensus on general hair testing and testing for drugs of abuse was presented at the meeting and published as a Letter to the Editor.
