Accredited Drug Testing provides comprehensive hair follicle drug testing services in Miller, South Dakota. Whether you require a hair drug or alcohol test, our specialty is hair testing with centers across the nation ready to conduct these tests. Typically, 1.5 to 2 inches of hair from the scalp or body is necessary. These tests can identify drugs, alcohol/ETG, or can be customized further.

In recent times, hair follicle drug tests have become a more prevalent method for drug screening. Increasingly, employers, legal entities, and substance abuse professionals favor hair testing over traditional urine screening. This method is sought after by organizations with zero-tolerance policies toward drug use, courts, and probationary programs, due to its extended detection span, up to 90 days, and difficulty to falsify results. However, urine testing remains superior for detecting recent drug use within a five-day window.

What it is, How it works

Hair testing is increasingly recognized as a crucial method for identifying drug and alcohol consumption. Hair offers an extended history of substance use by embedding biomarkers within the strands as hair grows. When collected near the scalp, the hair sample can detect alcohol and drugs for a period extending up to about 3 months. Collection of hair is straightforward, moderately challenging to tamper with, and convenient to ship.

To achieve 100mg of hair, a 1.5-inch sample of roughly 200 hair strands (comparable to the size of a #2 pencil) nearest to the scalp is recommended as it is optimal for both screening and confirmation. For EtG, additional analyses, and/or testing beyond 10 panels, a 150mg sample is suggested. It's advisable to weigh the sample using a jeweler’s scale. In situations where scalp hair cannot be collected, an equivalent amount of body hair can be used. References to head hair pertain only to scalp hair, while body hair includes all other types (facial, axillary, etc.).

Process Overview

The laboratory processing of a drug test result comprises four key steps: Accessioning, Screening, Extraction, and Confirmation.

Accessioning includes the initial introduction of a sample into a laboratory system. This step involves ensuring the sample was sealed and transported correctly, assigning a unique LAN (Laboratory Accessioning Number), and completing any extra information entry absent from an electronic chain of custody system.

Screening is an initial and swift test for abuse substances. It acts as an economical means to rule out drug use in most cases; however, positive screenings require confirmation to hold up in court. Any samples that suggest positivity in Screening necessitate further confirmation.

For samples indicating positive results in the Screening phase, additional hair is gathered from the initial sample and prepared for Extraction. In Extraction, drugs are retrieved from hair at a notably lower concentration compared to other methods (e.g., urine or oral fluid), which renders hair drug testing a challenging technique to execute.

Confirmation of any positive screening is performed through GC/MS, GC/MS/MS, or LC/MS/MS. All potential positive samples undergo cleansing before confirmation as required. The comprehensive laboratory process from Accessioning to Confirmation is evaluated against both the CAP (College of American Pathologists) Hair standards and the ISO / IEC 17025 accreditation.

Advantages of hair drug testing:

  • Long detection window: Hair drug tests can trace drug use for up to 90 days, whereas urine tests have a shorter time frame for detection.
  • Difficulty to cheat: Cheating a hair drug test is notably hard, ensuring more reliable outcomes.
  • Provides historical data: It outlines a pattern of drug consumption over a significant period, rather than just recent ingestion.

Limitations:

  • Cannot detect recent use: Drugs become detectable in hair approximately 5-7 days post-use.
  • Cost: Hair drug testing is typically pricier than other testing methods.
  • Variations in results: Factors such as hair color and individual hair growth variations may influence the concentration of drug metabolites in hair.

Note: Often labeled as "hair follicle tests", this test examines the hair strand rather than the follicle beneath the scalp.

Frequently Asked Questions

A hair follicle drug test analyzes a small sample of hair to detect a history of drug use over time. Because drug metabolites are incorporated into hair as it grows, this method can show patterns of use instead of just recent exposure. It is frequently used for legal and court requirements, long-term monitoring, and high-trust workforce screening.
Standard hair drug testing typically reflects drug use over approximately a 90-day period, based on the length of hair collected at the time of testing. Longer hair can sometimes reflect a longer time frame, and extremely short hair can reduce that window.
Hair drug testing commonly screens for marijuana/THC, cocaine, opiates/opioids, amphetamines/methamphetamines, and PCP. In many cases, additional expanded panels may be requested to include other substances.
Yes. If the donor's head hair is too short or unavailable, body hair may be collected as an alternative. The collector will document the source of the sample. This allows testing even for individuals with recently cut or shaved head hair.
Yes. Hair drug testing is commonly used in court, probation, custody, and compliance matters because the collection process follows a documented chain of custody and the analysis is performed by a certified laboratory. Results are provided in a form that can be reviewed by legal and administrative authorities.
Yes. Individuals, parents, attorneys, employers, and probation programs can all request hair drug testing. A doctor's order is not required. Results are confidential and released only to the authorized requesting party.
Hair testing provides a longer look-back period than urine testing, making it useful when you need to demonstrate ongoing abstinence or identify repeated/recent substance use patterns over time rather than just recent exposure. It is frequently selected for legal, compliance, and custody-related documentation.
A small section of hair is cut by a trained collector in a discreet, controlled manner. The sample is sealed, documented, and sent to the laboratory under established chain-of-custody procedures so that the results can be defended if they are ever challenged.
