Accredited Drug Testing provides comprehensive hair follicle drug assessments right in Clear Lake, South Dakota. If a hair drug or alcohol examination is required, Accredited Drug Testing excels in hair tests, with centers nationwide to conduct these assessments. Typically, 1.5 to 2 inches of head or body hair is needed as samples. Hair examinations can detect drugs, alcohol/ETG, or offer specialized options.

Recently, drug testing methods have increasingly adopted hair follicle drug assessments. Many employers, courts, and Substance Abuse professionals now prefer hair tests over traditional urine tests. Employers with strict anti-drug policies, courts, and probation officers utilize these hair follicle tests. The significant advantage lies in their extended drug detection time—lasting up to 90 days—collected through an observed process, making it nearly foolproof. Nevertheless, for identifying drug use within the past 5 days, urine tests remain the most precise method.

What it is, How it works

Hair analysis is now regarded as an effective method for identifying drug and alcohol consumption. Hair fibers capture biomarkers within the growing strand, offering a long-term record of substance use. When hair is taken near the scalp, it supplies up to a roughly 3-month window for detecting alcohol and drugs. The sample is easy to gather, hard to alter, and convenient for transport.

A sample measuring 1.5 inches, consisting of around 200 hair strands (similar in size to a #2 pencil), closest to the scalp, provides 100mg of hair, the optimal sample for both screening and confirmation purposes. For tests involving EtG, additional analyses, and/or more than 10 panels, 150mg of the sample is favored. We advise using a jeweler’s scale to weigh the sample. In the absence of scalp hair, an equivalent quantity of body hair may be used. By head hair, we mean only scalp hair. Body hair encompasses all other varieties (facial, axillary, etc.).

Process Overview

The laboratory processing of a drug test outcome encompasses four chief stages: Accessioning, Screening, Extraction, and Confirmation.

During Accessioning, a sample undergoes initial processing within a lab's system. This phase entails verifying the proper sealing and shipping of the sample, assigning a random LAN (Laboratory Accessioning Number), and completing any supplementary data entry not already supplied through an electronic chain of custody system.

Screening provides an initial rapid assessment for substances of abuse. Although Screening is a cost-efficient approach for excluding drug usage for most samples, a positive result necessitates confirmation for legal admissibility. Samples that test presumptively positive during Screening require another step for secondary confirmation.

Should a sample test presumptively positive in the Screening phase, additional hair is extracted from the original specimen and prepped for Extraction. Here, substances are extracted from the hair at much lower concentrations than in other methods (e.g., urine or saliva tests), thereby making hair drug testing the most complex methodology to undertake.

Confirming any positive screening results is executed via GC/MS, GC/MS/MS, or LC/MS/MS. All samples presumed positive are cleansed prior to confirmation if necessary. The entire lab process from Accessioning to Confirmation is reviewed under the CAP (College of American Pathologists) Hair designation along with adherence to ISO / IEC 17025 standards.

The merits of hair drug testing:

  • Extensive detection period: Hair tests have the capability to identify drug usage for up to 90 days, whereas urine tests have a more limited detection period.
  • Hard to manipulate: Altering the results of a hair drug test is exceedingly challenging, ensuring higher accuracy.
  • Draws historical insights: It highlights patterns of drug use over a duration, not just recent activity.

Drawbacks:

  • Cannot identify recent consumption: There is a lag of around 5-7 days before drugs become evident in hair.
  • Expense: Hair tests typically incur higher costs than other testing approaches.
  • Variable outcomes: Factors including hair color and individual hair growth differences can influence drug metabolite concentrations in hair.

Note: While generally termed "hair follicle tests", the analysis is actually conducted on the strand and not the follicle beneath the scalp

Why Hair Follicle Testing Beats Urine Testing

Compared to traditional urine testing, hair follicle testing in Clear Lake, SD, stands out for its enhanced detection capabilities. It provides superior accuracy and reliability, uncovering substance use that urine tests might miss. Hair testing’s non-intrusive collection process further adds convenience to its impressive benefits.

Employers appreciate the longer detection window of hair tests, which can capture a 90-day substance use history. This far exceeds urine tests' typical duration and provides a more comprehensive overview, thus keeping workplaces safer from substance abuse.

Extended Detection Window

One of the most significant advantages of hair follicle testing is its extended detection window, allowing it to track substance use for up to 90 days. In Clear Lake, SD, this offers employers and individuals a thorough review of drug use history, far beyond the short-term limitations of urine tests.

By analyzing hair samples, employers can gain insights into long-term substance habits, empowering them to make informed hiring and retention decisions. This comprehensive approach ensures a safer and more reliable assessment process.

Frequently Asked Questions

A hair follicle drug test analyzes a small sample of hair to detect a history of drug use over time. Because drug metabolites are incorporated into hair as it grows, this method can show patterns of use instead of just recent exposure. It is frequently used for legal and court requirements, long-term monitoring, and high-trust workforce screening.
Standard hair drug testing typically reflects drug use over approximately a 90-day period, based on the length of hair collected at the time of testing. Longer hair can sometimes reflect a longer time frame, and extremely short hair can reduce that window.
Hair drug testing commonly screens for marijuana/THC, cocaine, opiates/opioids, amphetamines/methamphetamines, and PCP. In many cases, additional expanded panels may be requested to include other substances.
Yes. If the donor's head hair is too short or unavailable, body hair may be collected as an alternative. The collector will document the source of the sample. This allows testing even for individuals with recently cut or shaved head hair.
Yes. Hair drug testing is commonly used in court, probation, custody, and compliance matters because the collection process follows a documented chain of custody and the analysis is performed by a certified laboratory. Results are provided in a form that can be reviewed by legal and administrative authorities.
Yes. Individuals, parents, attorneys, employers, and probation programs can all request hair drug testing. A doctor's order is not required. Results are confidential and released only to the authorized requesting party.
Hair testing provides a longer look-back period than urine testing, making it useful when you need to demonstrate ongoing abstinence or identify repeated/recent substance use patterns over time rather than just recent exposure. It is frequently selected for legal, compliance, and custody-related documentation.
A small section of hair is cut by a trained collector in a discreet, controlled manner. The sample is sealed, documented, and sent to the laboratory under established chain-of-custody procedures so that the results can be defended if they are ever challenged.
