Accredited Drug Testing offers comprehensive hair follicle drug testing services in Lake City, South Carolina. If a hair drug or alcohol test is what you need, our specialty is in hair testing with facilities across all cities in the Nation equipped to administer hair tests. Typically, 1.5 to 2 inches of hair from your head or body is needed. Hair analysis can detect drugs, alcohol/ETG, and can be customized for other needs.

In recent times, hair follicle drug testing has increasingly become part of standard drug testing procedures. Various employers, judicial bodies, and substance abuse experts are opting for hair drug tests over traditional urine tests. Employers with strict no-drug policies prefer this method, as do courts and those on probation, due to its longer detection period of up to 90 days and its resistance to tampering. However, for drug use within the past 5 days, urine tests remain highly accurate.

What it is, How it works

Hair analysis has gained recognition as an impactful method for identifying drug and alcohol use. Hair captures a comprehensive history of alcohol and drugs by capturing biomarkers in the fibers of the growing hair strand. When collected near the scalp, it offers about a 3-month detection period for alcohol and drugs. Hair is easy to gather, challenging to tamper with, and straightforward to transport.

A 1.5-inch section of approximately 200 hair strands (similar in size to a #2 pencil) closest to the scalp produces 100mg of hair, which is the optimal sample for analysis and confirmation. For EtG, add-ons, and/or assessments above 10 panels, 150mg of the specimen is advised. We suggest weighing the specimen using a jeweler’s scale. If scalp hair is unavailable, an equivalent amount of body hair can be used. When mentioning head hair, we mean scalp hair solely. Body hair includes all other hair types (facial, axillary, etc.).

Process Overview

The four primary procedures in processing a drug test result in a laboratory setting include Accessioning, Screening, Extraction, and Confirmation.

Accessioning involves the sample's initial processing into the lab’s system. This involves confirming the sample's proper sealing and shipping, assigning a unique LAN (Laboratory Accessioning Number), and finalizing any additional data entry not covered by an electronic chain of custody system.

Screening conducts an initial swift evaluation for substances. Screening is a budget-friendly approach for dismissing drug usage in most samples, though a positive result must be confirmed for legal admissibility. Any samples showing presumptive positives in Screening necessitate a secondary confirmation.

If a sample shows presumptive positives during Screening, more hair is extracted from the original sample and readied for Extraction. Here, drugs are extracted from hair at much lower concentrations compared to other methods (e.g., urine or oral fluid), hence hair drug screening being the most challenging method to execute.

Confirmation of any positive screening outcome is conducted through GC/MS, GC/MS/MS, or LC/MS/MS. All samples with presumptive positives are cleaned before confirmation as necessary. The entire laboratory sequence from Accessioning to Confirmation is evaluated according to both the CAP (College of American Pathologists) Hair specification and the ISO / IEC 17025 accreditation standards.

Advantages of hair drug testing:

  • Extended detection period: Hair drug assessments can detect substance use for up to 90 days, unlike urine tests which possess a more limited detection period.
  • Hard to manipulate: Hair drug tests are notably challenging to deceive, ensuring more precise results.
  • Offers historical data: It provides a usage pattern over time, unlike just recent consumption.

Limitations:

  • Incapable of detecting recent use: It requires about 5-7 days for drugs to be present in hair.
  • Expense: Hair drug tests typically cost more than other drug testing methods.
  • Result variability: Elements like hair color and individual hair growth variations can influence the concentration of drug metabolites in the hair.

Note: Though often called "hair follicle tests", the test reviews the hair strand and not the follicle underneath the scalp.

Frequently Asked Questions

A hair follicle drug test analyzes a small sample of hair to detect a history of drug use over time. Because drug metabolites are incorporated into hair as it grows, this method can show patterns of use instead of just recent exposure. It is frequently used for legal and court requirements, long-term monitoring, and high-trust workforce screening.
Standard hair drug testing typically reflects drug use over approximately a 90-day period, based on the length of hair collected at the time of testing. Longer hair can sometimes reflect a longer time frame, and extremely short hair can reduce that window.
Hair drug testing commonly screens for marijuana/THC, cocaine, opiates/opioids, amphetamines/methamphetamines, and PCP. In many cases, additional expanded panels may be requested to include other substances.
Yes. If the donor's head hair is too short or unavailable, body hair may be collected as an alternative. The collector will document the source of the sample. This allows testing even for individuals with recently cut or shaved head hair.
Yes. Hair drug testing is commonly used in court, probation, custody, and compliance matters because the collection process follows a documented chain of custody and the analysis is performed by a certified laboratory. Results are provided in a form that can be reviewed by legal and administrative authorities.
Yes. Individuals, parents, attorneys, employers, and probation programs can all request hair drug testing. A doctor's order is not required. Results are confidential and released only to the authorized requesting party.
Hair testing provides a longer look-back period than urine testing, making it useful when you need to demonstrate ongoing abstinence or identify repeated/recent substance use patterns over time rather than just recent exposure. It is frequently selected for legal, compliance, and custody-related documentation.
A small section of hair is cut by a trained collector in a discreet, controlled manner. The sample is sealed, documented, and sent to the laboratory under established chain-of-custody procedures so that the results can be defended if they are ever challenged.
