Accredited Drug Testing provides comprehensive hair follicle drug screening in Georgetown, South Carolina. If you're in need of a hair or alcohol test, we're proficient in hair testing and maintain testing centers in every city across the nation, capable of conducting hair tests. Typically, 1.5 to 2 inches of hair from the crown of your head or elsewhere on your body can be used. Hair analyses include drug detection, alcohol/ETG, and other tailored options.

Lately, the approach to drug screening increasingly embraces hair follicle drug testing. Employers, legal institutions, and substance abuse experts are favoring hair tests over conventional urine screenings. Hair follicle tests are chosen by employers adhering to strict zero-tolerance policies, courts, and probationers. A major advantage of this method is its extended drug detection duration—up to 90 days—conducted under observation, making it nearly tamper-proof. However, for identifying recent drug use within 5 days, urine tests remain the most precise.

What it is, How it works

Hair analysis is now regarded as an effective means for identifying drug and alcohol consumption. Hair reveals an extended timeline of alcohol and drug presence by capturing biomarkers within the strands of the growing hair. When gathered near the scalp, hair can offer a detection timeframe of up to approximately three months for alcohol and other substances. Hair collection is straightforward, relatively resistant to tampering, and easy for transport.

A 1.5-inch segment consisting of about 200 hair strands (about the dimensions of a #2 pencil) near the scalp will yield 100mg of hair, which is the preferred sample size for both screening and confirmation. For EtG, additional tests, and/or tests beyond 10 panels, it's suggested to collect 150mg of the sample. We suggest using a jeweler’s scale for weighing. Should scalp hair be inaccessible, an identical quantity of body hair can be used. Reference to head hair implies scalp hair only. Body hair denotes all other hair types (e.g., facial, axillary).

Process Overview

The primary steps in the laboratory analysis of a drug test are Accessioning, Screening, Extraction, and Confirmation.

Accessioning encompasses the initial registration of a sample into a lab's system. This process checks that the sample was sealed and shipped correctly, assigns a unique LAN (Laboratory Accessioning Number), and finalizes any remaining data input not covered by an electronic chain of custody mechanism.

Screening is a preliminary rapid assessment for drug presence. While Screening offers a cost-efficient method to rule out drug consumption on most samples, a positive result from this stage requires confirmation to be legally defensible. Any samples presumed positive in Screening must undergo further confirmation.

For any presumptive positive results from Screening, additional hair is extracted from the initial sample and readied for Extraction. Here, drugs are isolated from hair at significantly lower concentrations than with other methods (e.g., urine or oral fluid), hence making hair drug testing the most challenging to conduct.

Any positive screening outcomes are verified using GC/MS, GC/MS/MS, or LC/MS/MS. All samples presumed positive are cleansed before confirmation as necessary. The entire lab procedure from Accessioning through Confirmation is supervised under both the CAP (College of American Pathologists) Hair division and accreditation to ISO / IEC 17025 standards.

Advantages of hair drug testing:

  • Extended detection period: Hair drug tests can identify drug use up to 90 days, compared to urine tests with a shorter detection scope.
  • Difficult to manipulate: Cheating on a hair drug test is quite challenging, ensuring more reliable results.
  • Historical insights: It presents a pattern of drug usage over time, not merely recent use.

Limitations:

  • Incapable of recent use detection: Drugs become noticeable in hair approximately 5-7 days post-use.
  • Expense: Hair drug tests are typically pricier than other testing methods.
  • Result variability: Elements like hair color and individual hair growth differences can influence drug metabolite concentration in hair.

Note: Despite commonly being called "hair follicle tests", the actual test analyzes the hair strand, not the follicle beneath the scalp.

Why Hair Follicle Testing Beats Urine Testing

When comparing hair follicle testing to urine tests in Georgetown, SC, the former proves to be superior in detecting substance use with exceptional precision. Hair tests offer a broader detection window, revealing drug use more reliably than urine screenings. Their higher accuracy and reliability make them a preferred choice for those enforcing drug-free policies, providing an unmatched advantage in substance detection.

Extended Detection Window

In Georgetown, SC, the extended detection window of hair follicle testing offers a comprehensive assessment of an individual's substance use history, spanning up to 90 days. This long-term insight is pivotal for employers who wish to evaluate an applicant's or employee's past drug use, thereby making informed hiring or retention decisions. This superior detection period establishes hair testing as a dominant method over others.

Tamper-Resistant Testing Method

Hair follicle testing in Georgetown, SC is a tamper-resistant approach to drug screening, substantially minimizing the possibility of sample adulteration. Frequently Asked Questions

A hair follicle drug test analyzes a small sample of hair to detect a history of drug use over time. Because drug metabolites are incorporated into hair as it grows, this method can show patterns of use instead of just recent exposure. It is frequently used for legal and court requirements, long-term monitoring, and high-trust workforce screening.
Standard hair drug testing typically reflects drug use over approximately a 90-day period, based on the length of hair collected at the time of testing. Longer hair can sometimes reflect a longer time frame, and extremely short hair can reduce that window.
Hair drug testing commonly screens for marijuana/THC, cocaine, opiates/opioids, amphetamines/methamphetamines, and PCP. In many cases, additional expanded panels may be requested to include other substances.
Yes. If the donor's head hair is too short or unavailable, body hair may be collected as an alternative. The collector will document the source of the sample. This allows testing even for individuals with recently cut or shaved head hair.
Yes. Hair drug testing is commonly used in court, probation, custody, and compliance matters because the collection process follows a documented chain of custody and the analysis is performed by a certified laboratory. Results are provided in a form that can be reviewed by legal and administrative authorities.
Yes. Individuals, parents, attorneys, employers, and probation programs can all request hair drug testing. A doctor's order is not required. Results are confidential and released only to the authorized requesting party.
Hair testing provides a longer look-back period than urine testing, making it useful when you need to demonstrate ongoing abstinence or identify repeated/recent substance use patterns over time rather than just recent exposure. It is frequently selected for legal, compliance, and custody-related documentation.
A small section of hair is cut by a trained collector in a discreet, controlled manner. The sample is sealed, documented, and sent to the laboratory under established chain-of-custody procedures so that the results can be defended if they are ever challenged.
