Accredited Drug Testing offers comprehensive hair follicle drug examinations in Florence, South Carolina. Should you require a hair drug or alcohol screening, we specialize in hair analysis, with testing sites accessible in cities nationwide to conduct these assessments. A length of 1.5 to 2 inches of hair from the crown or body is typically required. These tests can evaluate substances, alcohol/ETG, or other tailored testing solutions.

In recent times, drug testing methods have increasingly incorporated hair follicle analysis. Numerous employers, legal entities, and substance abuse experts now prefer hair analysis over standard urine testing. Employers following strict no-drug policies, legal systems, and probationary individuals all employ hair follicle assessments. The main advantage is the extended detection timeframe, reaching up to 90 days, with an observed collection method, rendering it nearly foolproof. However, urine testing remains the most precise for recent use within five days.

What it is, How it works

Hair analysis is increasingly acknowledged as an effective method for identifying drug and alcohol consumption. The hair captures a comprehensive history of drug and alcohol intake by preserving markers within the hair fibers as they grow. When hair is obtained near the scalp, it offers an approximate 3-month window for detecting alcohol and other drugs. Hair collection is straightforward, relatively hard to tamper with, and convenient for transportation.

A 1.5-inch segment of roughly 200 hair strands (comparable to the size of a #2 pencil) near the scalp provides 100mg of hair, which is perfect for analysis and verification. For EtG, additional tests, and/or panels exceeding 10 drugs, a sample size of 150mg is advisable. It's best to measure the sample with a jeweler’s scale. If scalp hair isn't accessible, a similar quantity of body hair might be used. By head hair, we mean scalp hair only. Body hair pertains to any other types of hair (such as facial, axillary, etc.).

Process Overview

The primary four phases in a lab processing a drug test outcome include Accessioning, Screening, Extraction, and Confirmation.

Accessioning is about incorporating a sample into the lab’s system at first. This phase assures the sample was sealed and dispatched correctly, provides a random LAN (Laboratory Accessioning Number), and includes any supplemental data not captured by an electronic chain of custody system.

Screening executes an initial rapid analysis for drug presence. While Screening is cost-efficient for excluding drug usage in most cases, a positive result must be verified for legal acceptance. Any samples showing a presumptive positive in Screening require further confirmation.

If a sample indicates presumptive positivity during Screening, additional hair is extracted from the initial sample for Extraction. In the Extraction phase, drugs are separated from hair at much lower concentrations than in other procedures (e.g., urine or saliva); hence, hair drug testing is the most technical analysis to conduct.

Confirmation of any positive result from screening is executed through GC/MS, GC/MS/MS, or LC/MS/MS. All presumptive positives undergo washing before confirmation as necessary. The complete lab procedure from Accessioning to Confirmation undergoes review under both the CAP (College of American Pathologists) Hair designation and the ISO / IEC 17025 accreditation standards.

Benefits of hair drug testing:

  • Extended detection duration: Hair drug tests can reveal drug usage for as long as 90 days, unlike urine tests which offer a shorter detection period.
  • Hard to falsify: Cheating a hair drug test is extremely challenging, ensuring more reliable outcomes.
  • Delivers usage trends: It portrays a history of drug consumption over time, not just recent intake.

Drawbacks:

  • Cannot reveal recent consumption: Drugs become noticeable in hair only after about 5-7 days.
  • Price: Hair drug tests tend to be costlier than other methods of drug testing.
  • Result inconsistency: Variables like hair color and individual hair growth differences can influence drug metabolite levels in the hair.

Note: Commonly labeled as "hair follicle tests", the analysis actually examines the hair strand, not the follicle beneath the scalp.

Why Hair Follicle Testing Beats Urine Testing

Why Hair Follicle Testing Beats Urine Testing in Florence, SC
Hair follicle testing excels over traditional urine tests due to its superior detection capability. While urine tests offer short-term insights, hair analyses trace substance use back up to 90 days, delivering a more comprehensive view of an individual’s drug history.

Unlike urine tests, which are susceptible to contamination and short detection windows, hair follicle testing provides more reliable outcomes. This method's resilience to tampering ensures employers in Florence, SC, can maintain drug-free workplaces with certainty.

Employers relying on hair tests appreciate the extended detection window and increased reliability over urine tests. In Florence, SC, the ability to maintain stringent no-drug policies plays a pivotal role in safeguarding organizational standards and employee health.

Extended Detection Window

Extended Detection Window in Florence, SC
Hair follicle testing’s key advantage lies in its long detection period, spanning up to 90 days. This extensive timeframe allows employers in Florence, SC, to glean a thorough understanding of an individual’s past substance use, far beyond what urine tests can offer.

By covering a three-month window, hair follicle tests provide employers with a broader scope of a candidate's historical drug use, critical for roles requiring stringent health and safety standards. This capability aids in making informed hiring and compliance decisions.

In Florence, SC, businesses benefit from this extended detection window, as it offers a clear and detailed view of an applicant’s or employee’s substance history over a significant duration, promoting informed decision-making.

Tamper-Resistant Testing Method

Tamper-Resistant Testing Method in Florence, SC
Hair follicle tests significantly mitigate the risk of sample adulteration, offering trustworthy and definitive outcomes. Unlike urine tests, which can be susceptible to manipulation, hair samples are collected directly and resilient to tampering efforts.

In Florence, SC, organizations appreciate the reliability provided by hair follicle testing. The collection process ensures sample integrity, thus delivering results that leave no room for doubt regarding substance use.

Reducing the influence of external factors that compromise urine tests, hair follicle testing stands as a tamper-resistant method, favored by employers seeking accurate evaluations and maintaining workplace safety.

Frequently Asked Questions

A hair follicle drug test analyzes a small sample of hair to detect a history of drug use over time. Because drug metabolites are incorporated into hair as it grows, this method can show patterns of use instead of just recent exposure. It is frequently used for legal and court requirements, long-term monitoring, and high-trust workforce screening.
Standard hair drug testing typically reflects drug use over approximately a 90-day period, based on the length of hair collected at the time of testing. Longer hair can sometimes reflect a longer time frame, and extremely short hair can reduce that window.
Hair drug testing commonly screens for marijuana/THC, cocaine, opiates/opioids, amphetamines/methamphetamines, and PCP. In many cases, additional expanded panels may be requested to include other substances.
Yes. If the donor's head hair is too short or unavailable, body hair may be collected as an alternative. The collector will document the source of the sample. This allows testing even for individuals with recently cut or shaved head hair.
Yes. Hair drug testing is commonly used in court, probation, custody, and compliance matters because the collection process follows a documented chain of custody and the analysis is performed by a certified laboratory. Results are provided in a form that can be reviewed by legal and administrative authorities.
Yes. Individuals, parents, attorneys, employers, and probation programs can all request hair drug testing. A doctor's order is not required. Results are confidential and released only to the authorized requesting party.
Hair testing provides a longer look-back period than urine testing, making it useful when you need to demonstrate ongoing abstinence or identify repeated/recent substance use patterns over time rather than just recent exposure. It is frequently selected for legal, compliance, and custody-related documentation.
A small section of hair is cut by a trained collector in a discreet, controlled manner. The sample is sealed, documented, and sent to the laboratory under established chain-of-custody procedures so that the results can be defended if they are ever challenged.
