In Elloree, South Carolina, Accredited Drug Testing offers comprehensive hair follicle drug testing services. For individuals needing a hair drug or alcohol test, Accredited Drug Testing excels in this field, featuring testing centers across all Nationwide cities that can administer hair tests. Usually, 1.5 to 2 inches of hair, either from the head or body, are required. Hair tests can be customized for drugs, alcohol/ETG, or other specific testing needs.

Recently, hair follicle testing has become a more common method for drug screening. Employers, courts, and Substance Abuse professionals are increasingly opting for hair drug tests over traditional urine tests. Employers adhering to zero-tolerance drug policies, courts, and those on probation favor hair tests due to their longer drug detection period, up to 90 days, collected under observation, making cheating nearly impossible. Yet, urine tests remain more accurate for detecting drug use within the past 5 days.

What it is, How it works

Hair testing has gained recognition as a potent method for identifying drug and alcohol consumption. Hair offers an extended history of alcohol and drug use by capturing biomarkers within the fibers of the developing hair strand. When procured near the scalp, hair can deliver up to roughly a 3-month detection period for alcohol and other drugs. It is easy to collect, somewhat resistant to tampering, and simple to transport.

A 1.5-inch segment consisting of about 200 hair strands (about the girth of a #2 pencil) nearest the scalp will yield 100mg of hair, the optimal sample size for screening and confirmation. For EtG, additional tests, and/or tests exceeding 10 panels, 150mg of the sample is suggested. We suggest using a jeweler’s scale to weigh the sample. Should scalp hair be unavailable, a comparable quantity of body hair may be obtained. When mentioning head hair, we are specifying scalp hair exclusively. Body hair encompasses all other forms of hair (facial, axillary, etc.).

Process Overview

The laboratory processing of a drug test consists of four primary steps: Accessioning, Screening, Extraction, and Confirmation.

Accessioning pertains to the initial integration of a sample into a laboratory’s database. This step includes validating that the sample was appropriately sealed and transported, allocating a random LAN (Laboratory Accessioning Number), and finalizing any additional data entry not supplied by an electronic chain of custody system.

Screening consists of an initial rapid assessment for drugs of abuse. While Screening is an economical approach to exclude drug usage in most samples, a positive screening requires confirmation for legal admissibility. Samples that are presumptively positive in Screening necessitate a secondary confirmation.

Should a sample be presumptively positive during the Screening phase, additional hair is extracted from the initial sample and prepared for Extraction. During this phase, drugs are extracted from hair at considerably lower concentrations than other techniques (e.g., urine or oral fluid), making hair drug screening the most challenging methodology to execute.

Confirmation of any positive Screening outcomes is carried out via GC/MS, GC/MS/MS, or LC/MS/MS. All presumptive positive specimens are cleansed before confirmation as required. The complete laboratory procedure from Accessioning to Confirmation is examined under both the CAP (College of American Pathologists) Hair accreditation and adhering to ISO / IEC 17025 standards.

Advantages of hair drug testing:

  • Extended detection period: Hair drug tests can discern drug usage for up to 90 days, in contrast to urine tests with a shorter detection span.
  • Challenging to deceive: It is exceedingly difficult to manipulate a hair drug test, enhancing result precision.
  • Offers historical usage data: It provides a drug use trajectory over time, not merely recent usage.

Limitations:

  • Cannot identify recent use: Drugs become detectable in hair after around 5-7 days.
  • Expense: Hair drug tests are typically more costly than other drug testing approaches.
  • Result variability: Elements like hair color and personal differences in hair growth can influence drug metabolite concentrations in the hair.

Note: Although commonly termed "hair follicle tests," the test itself evaluates the hair strand and not the hair follicle beneath the scalp.

Why Hair Follicle Testing Beats Urine Testing

In Elloree, SC, hair follicle testing outshines urine tests with its superior detection accuracy and reliability. Unlike conventional urine testing, hair analysis offers a comprehensive review of substance use, providing dependable results that employers and legal entities can trust. The longer detection window, up to 90 days, also offers benefits over the shorter time frame of urine tests.

Extended Detection Window

Hair follicle testing in Elloree, SC detects drug use over an extended period, often up to 90 days. This prolonged detection window gives employers a thorough view of a person's drug use history. Such a comprehensive overview is invaluable, offering insights that are beyond the reach of shorter-term detection methods like urine testing.

Frequently Asked Questions

A hair follicle drug test analyzes a small sample of hair to detect a history of drug use over time. Because drug metabolites are incorporated into hair as it grows, this method can show patterns of use instead of just recent exposure. It is frequently used for legal and court requirements, long-term monitoring, and high-trust workforce screening.
Standard hair drug testing typically reflects drug use over approximately a 90-day period, based on the length of hair collected at the time of testing. Longer hair can sometimes reflect a longer time frame, and extremely short hair can reduce that window.
Hair drug testing commonly screens for marijuana/THC, cocaine, opiates/opioids, amphetamines/methamphetamines, and PCP. In many cases, additional expanded panels may be requested to include other substances.
Yes. If the donor's head hair is too short or unavailable, body hair may be collected as an alternative. The collector will document the source of the sample. This allows testing even for individuals with recently cut or shaved head hair.
Yes. Hair drug testing is commonly used in court, probation, custody, and compliance matters because the collection process follows a documented chain of custody and the analysis is performed by a certified laboratory. Results are provided in a form that can be reviewed by legal and administrative authorities.
Yes. Individuals, parents, attorneys, employers, and probation programs can all request hair drug testing. A doctor's order is not required. Results are confidential and released only to the authorized requesting party.
Hair testing provides a longer look-back period than urine testing, making it useful when you need to demonstrate ongoing abstinence or identify repeated/recent substance use patterns over time rather than just recent exposure. It is frequently selected for legal, compliance, and custody-related documentation.
A small section of hair is cut by a trained collector in a discreet, controlled manner. The sample is sealed, documented, and sent to the laboratory under established chain-of-custody procedures so that the results can be defended if they are ever challenged.
