In Cheraw, South Carolina, Accredited Drug Testing provides comprehensive hair follicle drug testing services. Whether you require testing for drugs or alcohol, our expertise lies in hair testing with facilities available nationwide. Generally, a minimum of 1.5 to 2 inches of hair from the head or body is needed. Hair analyses can be conducted for drugs, alcohol/ETG, and other specific testing needs.

The trend towards hair follicle drug testing has been on the rise in recent years. Employers, judicial systems, and Substance Abuse experts are opting for hair tests rather than traditional urine screenings. This method appeals to those with strict no-drug policies, probation cases, and legal proceedings because of its longer detection period, typically up to 90 days, its witnessed collection process, and its resistance to tampering. However, for drug use occurring in the past 5 days, urine tests remain most accurate.

What it is, How it works

Hair testing is increasingly recognized as a robust method for detecting drugs and alcohol. Hair captures a long-lasting history of drug and alcohol use by embedding biomarkers in the shaft of the developing hair. When sampled near the scalp, hair can offer a detection period of up to roughly 3 months for both alcohol and drugs. Hair collection is straightforward, relatively tamper-resistant, and simple to transport.

A 1.5-inch section containing about 200 strands of hair (roughly the diameter of a #2 pencil) taken nearest to the scalp supplies 100mg of hair, the ideal quantity for both screening and confirmation. For EtG, additional tests, and/or testing beyond 10 panels, 150mg of the hair sample is advised. We suggest utilizing a jeweler’s scale to weigh the specimen. If scalp hair is not available, a similar quantity of body hair can be used. When referring to head hair, it means scalp hair only. Body hair encompasses all other hair types (facial, axillary, etc.).

Process Overview

The laboratory procedure for processing a drug test result comprises four main steps: Accessioning, Screening, Extraction, and Confirmation.

Accessioning is the initial step of incorporating a sample into a lab's workflow. It entails confirming that the sample was properly sealed and dispatched, generating a unique LAN (Laboratory Accessioning Number), and completing any other data entry not captured by an electronic chain of custody.

Screening provides a rapid preliminary assessment for drugs of abuse. Screening is cost-efficient for negating drug use across most samples, yet a positive result requires confirmation for legal admissibility. Presumptive positive samples in Screening necessitate a follow-up confirmation.

If a sample tests presumptive positive during Screening, more hair is extracted from the specimen and readied for Extraction. This phase involves extracting drugs from hair at significantly lower concentrations than other methods (e.g., urine or oral fluid), which is why hair drug screening is considered the most complex technique to undertake.

Confirmation of any positive screen is achieved through GC/MS, GC/MS/MS, or LC/MS/MS. All presumptive positive samples undergo washing before confirmation as necessary. The entire lab process from Accessioning to Confirmation is subject to review under both the CAP (College of American Pathologists) Hair designation and ISO / IEC 17025 accreditation standards.

Advantages of hair drug testing:

  • Extended detection window: Hair drug tests can reveal drug use for up to 90 days, whereas urine tests offer a shorter detection period.
  • Hard to manipulate: Cheat attempts in hair drug tests are challenging, enhancing result accuracy.
  • Offers historical insight: It reveals a timeline of drug use over a duration, not merely recent usage.

Limitations:

  • Not effective for recent use detection: Drugs become detectable in hair approximately 5-7 days after use.
  • Expense: Hair drug tests typically cost more than other drug testing approaches.
  • Result variability: Variables such as hair color and individual hair growth rates can influence drug metabolite levels in hair.

Note: Despite being commonly called "hair follicle tests", the assessment is conducted on the hair shaft rather than the follicle beneath the scalp

Why Hair Follicle Testing Beats Urine Testing

In Cheraw, SC, hair follicle testing surpasses urine tests in accuracy and reliability, offering extensive detection capabilities. Unlike urine tests, hair samples reveal a more extended history of drug use—up to 90 days—which proves crucial for employers enforcing zero-tolerance policies. Frequently Asked Questions

A hair follicle drug test analyzes a small sample of hair to detect a history of drug use over time. Because drug metabolites are incorporated into hair as it grows, this method can show patterns of use instead of just recent exposure. It is frequently used for legal and court requirements, long-term monitoring, and high-trust workforce screening.
Standard hair drug testing typically reflects drug use over approximately a 90-day period, based on the length of hair collected at the time of testing. Longer hair can sometimes reflect a longer time frame, and extremely short hair can reduce that window.
Hair drug testing commonly screens for marijuana/THC, cocaine, opiates/opioids, amphetamines/methamphetamines, and PCP. In many cases, additional expanded panels may be requested to include other substances.
Yes. If the donor's head hair is too short or unavailable, body hair may be collected as an alternative. The collector will document the source of the sample. This allows testing even for individuals with recently cut or shaved head hair.
Yes. Hair drug testing is commonly used in court, probation, custody, and compliance matters because the collection process follows a documented chain of custody and the analysis is performed by a certified laboratory. Results are provided in a form that can be reviewed by legal and administrative authorities.
Yes. Individuals, parents, attorneys, employers, and probation programs can all request hair drug testing. A doctor's order is not required. Results are confidential and released only to the authorized requesting party.
Hair testing provides a longer look-back period than urine testing, making it useful when you need to demonstrate ongoing abstinence or identify repeated/recent substance use patterns over time rather than just recent exposure. It is frequently selected for legal, compliance, and custody-related documentation.
A small section of hair is cut by a trained collector in a discreet, controlled manner. The sample is sealed, documented, and sent to the laboratory under established chain-of-custody procedures so that the results can be defended if they are ever challenged.
