In York Haven, Pennsylvania, Accredited Drug Testing provides comprehensive hair follicle drug testing services. Whether you're seeking a hair drug or alcohol examination, our expertise lies in hair testing with facilities nationwide ready to assist. Typically, 1.5 to 2 inches of hair from the crown or body suffices for these tests, which can analyze drugs, alcohol/ETG, and other specific substances.

More recently, hair follicle drug testing has become a prevalent choice for drug screenings. Many workplaces, judicial systems, and substance abuse experts favor this over conventional urine tests. Hair tests are integral for employers with strict no-drug policies, legal entities, and individuals under probation. Its extended detection period of up to 90 days and observed collection process makes it nearly cheat-proof, even though urine tests remain best for detecting very recent use.

What it is, How it works

Hair analysis is increasingly recognized as an effective method for detecting the use of drugs and alcohol. Hair captures biomarkers within the strands, offering a long-term overview of alcohol and drug consumption. When clipped near the scalp, hair samples can reveal drug and alcohol use over a span of roughly three months. Collecting hair samples is straightforward, challenging to alter, and easy to transport.

A 1.5-inch hair piece consisting of approximately 200 strands (the diameter of a #2 pencil) near the scalp provides 100mg of hair, which is the optimal amount for both screening and confirmation. For tests like EtG, add-ons, or those beyond 10 panels, a 150mg sample is advised. It's best to weigh the sample using a jeweler's scale. If scalp hair is not present, a similar quantity of body hair can be gathered. When we mention head hair, we specifically mean scalp hair. Body hair encompasses other types, such as facial or axillary hair.

Process Overview

The lab processing of a drug test result consists of four major steps: Accessioning, Screening, Extraction, and Confirmation.

Accessioning is the preliminary integration of a sample into a laboratory’s database. This step involves ensuring the sample was securely sealed and transported, assigning a unique LAN (Laboratory Accessioning Number), and completing any needed data entry not included in an electronic chain of custody system.

Screening serves as an initial, expeditious assessment for drug abuse. Though Screening is a cost-efficient way to dismiss drug use in most samples, a positive result must be confirmed to be valid in legal settings. Samples that result in a presumptive positive during Screening must undergo further confirmation.

Should a sample screen presumptive positive, a portion of the original sample is taken for Extraction. During this process, substances are removed from hair at much lower concentrations compared to other techniques (e.g., urine or oral fluid). This unique attribute makes hair drug testing one of the most challenging methodologies to implement.

Any positive screening is confirmed using GC/MS, GC/MS/MS or LC/MS/MS techniques. All samples that presumptively test positive are cleaned prior to confirmation when necessary. The full laboratory process, from Accessioning to Confirmation, is carefully examined under the CAP (College of American Pathologists) Hair designation and the ISO / IEC 17025 standards accreditation.

Advantages of hair drug testing:

  • Extended detection window: Hair testing can trace drug use up to 90 days, unlike urine tests which detect over shorter periods.
  • High difficulty to manipulate: Hair drug tests are notoriously hard to deceive, enhancing the reliability of results.
  • Historical usage data: It can chart drug use patterns over time, not only recent usage.

Limitations:

  • Cannot detect immediate use: Drugs become apparent in hair only after about 5-7 days.
  • Expense: Hair drug tests typically cost more compared to other drug testing methods.
  • Inconsistent results: Factors like hair color and growth rate variances among individuals may influence drug metabolite concentrations in hair.

Note: While commonly called "hair follicle tests", the test evaluates the hair strand itself, not the underlying follicle beneath the scalp.

Why Hair Follicle Testing Beats Urine Testing

Why Choose Hair Testing Over Urine Tests in York Haven, PA?

Hair follicle tests offer greater accuracy and reliability than traditional urine tests. The scope of substances detected is broader, and results are less susceptible to manipulation. For comprehensive detection of drug use history over several months, hair tests clearly outperform their urine counterparts, ensuring true representation of substance use.

Extended Detection Window

With hair follicle testing, York Haven, PA employers gain insight into a person's drug history spanning up to 90 days. This extended detection window surpasses urine tests, letting employers thoroughly assess candidate habits. Thanks to this advantage, businesses can confidently make informed employment decisions based on reliable substance use histories.

Frequently Asked Questions

A hair follicle drug test analyzes a small sample of hair to detect a history of drug use over time. Because drug metabolites are incorporated into hair as it grows, this method can show patterns of use instead of just recent exposure. It is frequently used for legal and court requirements, long-term monitoring, and high-trust workforce screening.
Standard hair drug testing typically reflects drug use over approximately a 90-day period, based on the length of hair collected at the time of testing. Longer hair can sometimes reflect a longer time frame, and extremely short hair can reduce that window.
Hair drug testing commonly screens for marijuana/THC, cocaine, opiates/opioids, amphetamines/methamphetamines, and PCP. In many cases, additional expanded panels may be requested to include other substances.
Yes. If the donor's head hair is too short or unavailable, body hair may be collected as an alternative. The collector will document the source of the sample. This allows testing even for individuals with recently cut or shaved head hair.
Yes. Hair drug testing is commonly used in court, probation, custody, and compliance matters because the collection process follows a documented chain of custody and the analysis is performed by a certified laboratory. Results are provided in a form that can be reviewed by legal and administrative authorities.
Yes. Individuals, parents, attorneys, employers, and probation programs can all request hair drug testing. A doctor's order is not required. Results are confidential and released only to the authorized requesting party.
Hair testing provides a longer look-back period than urine testing, making it useful when you need to demonstrate ongoing abstinence or identify repeated/recent substance use patterns over time rather than just recent exposure. It is frequently selected for legal, compliance, and custody-related documentation.
A small section of hair is cut by a trained collector in a discreet, controlled manner. The sample is sealed, documented, and sent to the laboratory under established chain-of-custody procedures so that the results can be defended if they are ever challenged.
