Providing comprehensive hair follicle drug testing in Wind Gap, Pennsylvania, Accredited Drug Testing is your go-to for precise hair analyses. Whether you require screenings for drugs or alcohol, we have nationwide testing facilities, including locations in every city, ready to conduct these assessments. With 1.5 to 2 inches of hair from either your scalp or body, our tests can detect alcohol, ETG, and other substances as needed.

The trend toward hair follicle drug tests over recent years has grown significantly, offering a distinct alternative to urine analysis. Employers, legal entities, and substance abuse professionals are now prioritizing hair testing, with zero-tolerance workplaces, judiciary actions, and probation circumstances increasingly adopting it. This shift is primarily due to the extended detection period, which spans approximately 90 days, ensuring collected samples are difficult to manipulate. However, for immediate detection within a 5-day window, urine testing remains superior.

What it is, How it works

Hair testing is now acknowledged as a formidable means of detecting substance and alcohol consumption. By encasing biomarkers within the hair strand's fibers, hair retains a historical record of alcohol and drug use. When collected near the scalp, hair offers roughly a 3-month detection period for substances including alcohol. The process of collecting hair is straightforward, challenging to tamper with, and simple to transport.

A strand length of 1.5 inches encompassing approximately 200 hair strands (comparable to the width of a #2 pencil) closest to the scalp yields 100mg, deemed the optimal quantity for testing and confirmation. For EtG and additional tests exceeding 10 panels, a sample size of 150mg is advised. We suggest measuring the sample using a jeweler's scale. If scalp hair isn't available, a matching quantity of body hair can be used. When discussing head hair, we specifically mean scalp hair. Body hair encompasses all other hair types (facial, axillary, etc.).

Process Overview

The procedure for processing a drug test result in a lab encompasses four key stages: Accessioning, Screening, Extraction, and Confirmation.

Accessioning includes the fundamental steps of incorporating a sample into the lab's system. This phase ensures the sample is properly sealed and shipped, assigns it a random LAN (Laboratory Accessioning Number), and completes any further data entry that an electronic chain of custody system doesn't cover.

Screening constitutes a preliminary, swift evaluation for drugs of abuse. Although Screening is a budget-friendly way to exclude drug use in most samples, a positive result necessitates confirmation to qualify for legal scrutiny. Samples that are presumptively positive at this stage necessitate a subsequent confirmation.

For samples deemed presumptively positive during Screening, additional hair is extracted from the initial sample and prepped for Extraction. During Extraction, drugs are separated from the hair at concentrations significantly lower than those in alternative methods (e.g., urine or oral fluid), highlighting the complexity of hair drug screening.

Positive results from the screening process undergo Confirmation using GC/MS, GC/MS/MS, or LC/MS/MS. Any samples that tested presumptively positive are cleansed pre-confirmation as needed. The complete laboratory process, from Accessioning to Confirmation, undergoes review according to CAP (College of American Pathologists) Hair guidelines and ISO / IEC 17025 accreditation standards.

Advantages of hair drug testing:

  • Extended detection window: Hair drug tests can reveal drug use within a 90-day timeframe, in contrast to the more limited detection period of urine tests.
  • Resistance to tampering: The difficulty in manipulating a hair drug test enhances the accuracy of its results.
  • Historical data provision: This method can depict a pattern of substance use spanning a timeframe, not merely recent usage.

Limitations:

  • Inability to detect immediate use: Drugs are typically untraceable in hair for around 5-7 days post-consumption.
  • Expense: Hair drug testing tends to be more costly than other testing approaches.
  • Result variability: Elements such as hair color and individual growth rates can influence drug metabolite concentrations in hair.

A point of clarification: Although frequently termed "hair follicle tests", the analysis targets the hair strand rather than the follicle under the scalp.

Frequently Asked Questions

A hair follicle drug test analyzes a small sample of hair to detect a history of drug use over time. Because drug metabolites are incorporated into hair as it grows, this method can show patterns of use instead of just recent exposure. It is frequently used for legal and court requirements, long-term monitoring, and high-trust workforce screening.
Standard hair drug testing typically reflects drug use over approximately a 90-day period, based on the length of hair collected at the time of testing. Longer hair can sometimes reflect a longer time frame, and extremely short hair can reduce that window.
Hair drug testing commonly screens for marijuana/THC, cocaine, opiates/opioids, amphetamines/methamphetamines, and PCP. In many cases, additional expanded panels may be requested to include other substances.
Yes. If the donor's head hair is too short or unavailable, body hair may be collected as an alternative. The collector will document the source of the sample. This allows testing even for individuals with recently cut or shaved head hair.
Yes. Hair drug testing is commonly used in court, probation, custody, and compliance matters because the collection process follows a documented chain of custody and the analysis is performed by a certified laboratory. Results are provided in a form that can be reviewed by legal and administrative authorities.
Yes. Individuals, parents, attorneys, employers, and probation programs can all request hair drug testing. A doctor's order is not required. Results are confidential and released only to the authorized requesting party.
Hair testing provides a longer look-back period than urine testing, making it useful when you need to demonstrate ongoing abstinence or identify repeated/recent substance use patterns over time rather than just recent exposure. It is frequently selected for legal, compliance, and custody-related documentation.
A small section of hair is cut by a trained collector in a discreet, controlled manner. The sample is sealed, documented, and sent to the laboratory under established chain-of-custody procedures so that the results can be defended if they are ever challenged.
