Accredited Drug Testing offers comprehensive hair follicle drug assessments in Washington, Pennsylvania. When you require a hair drug or alcohol screening, Accredited Drug Testing stands out with expertise in hair analysis, supported by centers across all cities Nationwide. Typically, a minimum of 1.5 to 2 inches of hair on the scalp or body hair is required. Hair evaluations can detect drugs, alcohol/ETG, and other tailored hair test configurations.

Recently, utilizing hair follicle analysis for drug screening has gained prevalence. Many employers, judicial systems, and Substance Abuse specialists are opting for hair assessments over traditional urine exams. This method is favored by employers with strict no-drug-use policies, courts, and individuals on probation. The main advantage of a hair follicle assessment is its extended detection window up to 90 days, with an observed collection process, rendering it nearly tamper-proof. However, urine tests remain more precise for detecting recent drug use within the last 5 days.

What it is, How it works

Hair testing is recognized as a significant method for detecting drug and alcohol consumption. Hair encapsulates a prolonged timeline of alcohol and drug usage by securing biomarkers within the hair strand fibers as they develop. Collecting hair near the scalp can offer a detection period for alcohol and drugs extending up to three months. Hair collection is straightforward, relatively resistant to tampering, and convenient for transport.

A hair sample of 1.5 inches consisting of roughly 200 strands (approximately the width of a #2 pencil) nearest to the scalp yields 100mg of hair, suitable for both screening and confirmation. For advanced tests above 10 panels, including EtG or add-ons, a 150mg sample is advisable. It is suggested to weigh the sample using a jeweler's scale. If scalp hair isn't accessible, a comparable amount of body hair can be used. When mentioning head hair, it specifically refers to scalp hair. Body hair includes other types like facial hair, axillary hair, etc.

Process Overview

The laboratory processing of a drug test is comprised of four key stages: Accessioning, Screening, Extraction, and Confirmation.

Accessioning entails initially processing a sample into the laboratory's system. This process verifies proper sealing and shipment of the sample, assigns a random LAN (Laboratory Accessioning Number), and completes any additional necessary data entry that the electronic chain of custody may not provide.

Screening is a preliminary evaluation to identify drugs of abuse. Though Screening provides an economical way to eliminate the majority of samples regarding drug use, a positive screen must be confirmed for court admissibility. Samples that test presumptively positive in Screening need subsequent confirmation.

Samples that show a presumptive positive during Screening advance to Extraction, where more hair is extracted from the initial sample for further processing. The Extraction phase retrieves drugs from hair at significantly lower concentrations compared to other methods (e.g., urine or oral fluid), making hair drug analysis the most challenging methodology.

GC/MS, GC/MS/MS, or LC/MS/MS methods are employed to confirm any positive screening results. All samples with presumptive positives are cleansed before the Confirmation stage if necessary. The complete laboratory process from Accessioning to Confirmation is evaluated under both the CAP (College of American Pathologists) Hair designation and ISO / IEC 17025 accreditation standards.

Advantages of hair drug testing:

  • Significant detection timeframe: Hair drug tests can reveal drug consumption for up to 90 days, whereas urine tests have a shorter detection period.
  • Fraud resistance: Hair drug tests are challenging to manipulate, leading to highly reliable outcomes.
  • Tracks historical trends: This method can outline an individual's drug use pattern over time, rather than just recent use.

Limitations:

  • Recent usage detection incapability: Drugs typically become traceable in hair after about 5-7 days.
  • Expense: Hair drug tests usually incur higher costs compared to alternative drug testing approaches.
  • Result variability: Factors such as the color of the hair and individual differences in hair growth can influence drug metabolite concentration in hair.

Note: Often described as "hair follicle tests", the procedure evaluates the hair strand itself, not the follicle beneath the scalp.

Why Hair Follicle Testing Beats Urine Testing

Frequently Asked Questions

A hair follicle drug test analyzes a small sample of hair to detect a history of drug use over time. Because drug metabolites are incorporated into hair as it grows, this method can show patterns of use instead of just recent exposure. It is frequently used for legal and court requirements, long-term monitoring, and high-trust workforce screening.
Standard hair drug testing typically reflects drug use over approximately a 90-day period, based on the length of hair collected at the time of testing. Longer hair can sometimes reflect a longer time frame, and extremely short hair can reduce that window.
Hair drug testing commonly screens for marijuana/THC, cocaine, opiates/opioids, amphetamines/methamphetamines, and PCP. In many cases, additional expanded panels may be requested to include other substances.
Yes. If the donor's head hair is too short or unavailable, body hair may be collected as an alternative. The collector will document the source of the sample. This allows testing even for individuals with recently cut or shaved head hair.
Yes. Hair drug testing is commonly used in court, probation, custody, and compliance matters because the collection process follows a documented chain of custody and the analysis is performed by a certified laboratory. Results are provided in a form that can be reviewed by legal and administrative authorities.
Yes. Individuals, parents, attorneys, employers, and probation programs can all request hair drug testing. A doctor's order is not required. Results are confidential and released only to the authorized requesting party.
Hair testing provides a longer look-back period than urine testing, making it useful when you need to demonstrate ongoing abstinence or identify repeated/recent substance use patterns over time rather than just recent exposure. It is frequently selected for legal, compliance, and custody-related documentation.
A small section of hair is cut by a trained collector in a discreet, controlled manner. The sample is sealed, documented, and sent to the laboratory under established chain-of-custody procedures so that the results can be defended if they are ever challenged.
