Accredited Drug Testing offers comprehensive hair follicle testing services in Tipton, Pennsylvania. If you're in need of a hair drug or alcohol screening, we specialize in hair analysis with facilities available in all cities across the country. We require at least 1.5 to 2 inches of hair from your head or body for a successful test. Analyzing hair can yield results for drugs, alcohol/ETG, and other tailored testing customs.

Recently, hair follicle drug screenings have become more prevalent in testing methods. Employers, courts, and addiction specialists increasingly favor hair drug tests over standard urine analyses. Hair follicle evaluations are chosen by employers maintaining no-tolerance drug guidelines, judiciary systems, and probation supervisors. The chief advantage of these tests is their extended detection span of up to 90 days when collected under observation, making them nearly invulnerable to manipulation. However, for detecting usage in the last five days, urine tests remain more precise.

What it is, How it works

Hair analysis has emerged as a robust method for detecting substance use of drugs and alcohol. Hair offers an extended history of alcohol and drug use by capturing biomarkers within the fibers of the growing hair. When collected near the scalp, hair can provide a detection period of up to about three months for drugs and alcohol. Hair is easy to obtain, relatively difficult to tamper with, and straightforward to transport.

A hair sample measuring 1.5 inches, consisting of about 200 hair strands (approximately the width of a #2 pencil) closest to the scalp, yields 100mg of hair, which is the optimal sample size for screening and confirmation. For EtG, additional tests, and tests exceeding ten panels, 150mg of the sample is advised. We suggest using a jeweler’s scale to measure the specimen. If scalp hair is not available, a comparable quantity of body hair can be obtained. When we mention head hair, we are only referring to scalp hair, whereas body hair refers to other types such as facial, axillary, etc.

Process Overview

The laboratory processing of a drug test result generally involves four key stages: Accessioning, Screening, Extraction, and Confirmation.

Accessioning includes the initial integration of a sample into a lab's system. This process ensures the sample was properly sealed and shipped, assigns a random LAN (Laboratory Accessioning Number), and finalizes any additional data entry not covered by an electronic chain of custody system.

Screening comprises a preliminary check for drug abuse. Although Screening is an economical method to eliminate drug use for the majority of samples, a positive screen must be verified to be admissible in legal proceedings. Any samples with presumptive positives in the Screening stage necessitate a secondary confirmation.

If a sample has presumptive positives in the Screening phase, more hair is taken from the initial specimen and prepared for Extraction. At this stage, drugs are extracted from hair at a significantly lower concentration compared to other methods (such as urine or oral fluid), which is why hair drug screening is among the most challenging methods to execute.

Confirmation of any positive screen result is performed using GC/MS, GC/MS/MS, or LC/MS/MS. All presumptive positive samples undergo washing before confirmation as needed. The whole laboratory process, from Accessioning to Confirmation, is reviewed under both the CAP (College of American Pathologists) Hair designation and the accreditation to ISO / IEC 17025 standards.

Advantages of hair drug testing:

  • Extended detection timeframe: Hair drug tests can identify drug use for up to 90 days, unlike urine tests, which have a shorter detection period.
  • Hard to manipulate results: It is challenging to manipulate a hair drug test, enhancing the accuracy of results.
  • Reflects historical usage: It demonstrates a drug use pattern over extended periods, not only recent usage.

Limitations:

  • Cannot identify recent usage: It takes roughly 5-7 days for drugs to show up in hair.
  • Expense: Hair drug tests are typically more costly than other testing methods.
  • Result diversity: Attributes like hair color and individual variations in hair growth can influence drug metabolite concentrations in hair.

Note: Although often called "hair follicle tests", the test itself analyzes the hair strand and not the follicle beneath the scalp.

Frequently Asked Questions

A hair follicle drug test analyzes a small sample of hair to detect a history of drug use over time. Because drug metabolites are incorporated into hair as it grows, this method can show patterns of use instead of just recent exposure. It is frequently used for legal and court requirements, long-term monitoring, and high-trust workforce screening.
Standard hair drug testing typically reflects drug use over approximately a 90-day period, based on the length of hair collected at the time of testing. Longer hair can sometimes reflect a longer time frame, and extremely short hair can reduce that window.
Hair drug testing commonly screens for marijuana/THC, cocaine, opiates/opioids, amphetamines/methamphetamines, and PCP. In many cases, additional expanded panels may be requested to include other substances.
Yes. If the donor's head hair is too short or unavailable, body hair may be collected as an alternative. The collector will document the source of the sample. This allows testing even for individuals with recently cut or shaved head hair.
Yes. Hair drug testing is commonly used in court, probation, custody, and compliance matters because the collection process follows a documented chain of custody and the analysis is performed by a certified laboratory. Results are provided in a form that can be reviewed by legal and administrative authorities.
Yes. Individuals, parents, attorneys, employers, and probation programs can all request hair drug testing. A doctor's order is not required. Results are confidential and released only to the authorized requesting party.
Hair testing provides a longer look-back period than urine testing, making it useful when you need to demonstrate ongoing abstinence or identify repeated/recent substance use patterns over time rather than just recent exposure. It is frequently selected for legal, compliance, and custody-related documentation.
A small section of hair is cut by a trained collector in a discreet, controlled manner. The sample is sealed, documented, and sent to the laboratory under established chain-of-custody procedures so that the results can be defended if they are ever challenged.
