Accredited Drug Testing offers comprehensive hair follicle drug testing services in St. Marys, Pennsylvania. If you're in need of a hair or alcohol test, our specialty lies in hair testing, and we have facilities across cities nationwide ready to conduct the tests. Generally, a sample of 1.5 to 2 inches of hair, either from the head or body, is required. Hair testing can screen for drugs, alcohol/ETG, or other tailored options.

The popularity of hair follicle drug tests has soared in recent years. Employers, courts, and substance abuse experts frequently prefer them over standard urine tests. These tests are favored by employers with strict drug policies, the judicial system, and for those on probation due to their extensive detection window, typically up to 90 days. They are observed during collection and very difficult to tamper with. For detecting substance use within the last 5 days, however, urine tests remain the most precise.

What it is, How it works

Hair testing is increasingly recognized as a robust method for detecting drug and alcohol use. Hair offers a comprehensive history of substance use, as biomarkers are embedded in the strands of growing hair. When taken near the scalp, hair can reveal up to a 3-month detection period for substances. Collecting hair is straightforward, difficult to tamper with, and simple to transport.

A sample of 1.5 inches, consisting of about 200 hair strands (comparable to a #2 pencil in size) near the scalp provides 100mg of hair, which is optimal for screening and confirmation. For EtG, add-ons, and/or tests exceeding 10 panels, a sample of 150mg is advisable. A jeweler’s scale is suggested for weighing the sample. If scalp hair isn’t available, a similar quantity of body hair can be used. "Head hair" refers strictly to scalp hair, whereas "body hair" includes all other hair types (e.g., facial, axillary).

Process Overview

The process of laboratory drug test result processing includes four steps: Accessioning, Screening, Extraction, and Confirmation.

Accessioning is the first step, involving the initial integration of a sample into a lab’s system. It includes confirming the sample’s seal and shipping correctness, assigning a random Laboratory Accessioning Number (LAN), and completing ancillary data entry not covered by an electronic chain of custody.

Screening is a preliminary test for potential drug abuse. While it economically excludes drug use in the majority of samples, any positive screening outcome must be confirmed to be court admissible. Samples with preliminary positive results require secondary confirmation.

Presumptive positives in the Screening phase undergo further Extraction. At this stage, the concentration of drugs extracted from hair is much lower than in other methods (e.g., urine or oral fluid), highlighting the complexity of hair drug screening.

Confirmation for positive screening outcomes utilizes GC/MS, GC/MS/MS, or LC/MS/MS. Before confirmation, all presumptive positives are cleansed as required. The entire lab process, from Accessioning to Confirmation, is governed by the CAP (College of American Pathologists) Hair designation and accreditation to ISO / IEC 17025 standards.

Advantages of hair drug testing:

  • Long detection window: Hair drug tests have a detection window of up to 90 days, surpassing the shorter window of urine tests.
  • Difficulty to cheat: The challenge in deceiving a hair drug test enhances the accuracy of the results.
  • Provides historical data: Offers insights into drug usage trends over time rather than just immediate use.

Limitations:

  • Cannot detect recent use: A lag of about 5-7 days exists before drugs become detectable in hair.
  • Cost: Hair drug tests typically incur higher costs compared to alternative testing methods.
  • Variations in results: Factors such as hair color and individual differences in hair growth can affect drug metabolite concentration levels in hair.

Note: The test often called a "hair follicle test" actually examines the hair strand, not the follicle beneath the scalp.

Frequently Asked Questions

A hair follicle drug test analyzes a small sample of hair to detect a history of drug use over time. Because drug metabolites are incorporated into hair as it grows, this method can show patterns of use instead of just recent exposure. It is frequently used for legal and court requirements, long-term monitoring, and high-trust workforce screening.
Standard hair drug testing typically reflects drug use over approximately a 90-day period, based on the length of hair collected at the time of testing. Longer hair can sometimes reflect a longer time frame, and extremely short hair can reduce that window.
Hair drug testing commonly screens for marijuana/THC, cocaine, opiates/opioids, amphetamines/methamphetamines, and PCP. In many cases, additional expanded panels may be requested to include other substances.
Yes. If the donor's head hair is too short or unavailable, body hair may be collected as an alternative. The collector will document the source of the sample. This allows testing even for individuals with recently cut or shaved head hair.
Yes. Hair drug testing is commonly used in court, probation, custody, and compliance matters because the collection process follows a documented chain of custody and the analysis is performed by a certified laboratory. Results are provided in a form that can be reviewed by legal and administrative authorities.
Yes. Individuals, parents, attorneys, employers, and probation programs can all request hair drug testing. A doctor's order is not required. Results are confidential and released only to the authorized requesting party.
Hair testing provides a longer look-back period than urine testing, making it useful when you need to demonstrate ongoing abstinence or identify repeated/recent substance use patterns over time rather than just recent exposure. It is frequently selected for legal, compliance, and custody-related documentation.
A small section of hair is cut by a trained collector in a discreet, controlled manner. The sample is sealed, documented, and sent to the laboratory under established chain-of-custody procedures so that the results can be defended if they are ever challenged.
