In Siglerville, Pennsylvania, Accredited Drug Testing provides comprehensive hair follicle drug testing. Specializing in hair testing, our centers are available nationwide to conduct both drug and alcohol tests. A minimum of 1.5 to 2 inches of hair is needed for testing, although body hair can suffice in some cases. Our analyses cover drugs, alcohol/ETG, and other tailored options.

Recently, the reliance on hair follicle drug tests has grown among employers, courts, and substance abuse experts, opting for them over traditional urine tests. This method appeals to zero-tolerance organizations, courts, and probation situations. Hair follicle tests offer an extended detection window of up to 90 days with observed collection, making it hard to manipulate results. However, for identifying drug use within the last 5 days, urine tests remain the most accurate.

What it is, How it works

The analysis of hair has emerged as an effective method for identifying drug and alcohol consumption. Hair encapsulates a prolonged timeline of alcohol and drug use by embedding biomarkers within the strands of growing hair. When hair is taken near the scalp’s surface, it can reveal a reflection of alcohol and drug use over roughly a span of 3 months. The collection process for hair is straightforward, less prone to tampering, and convenient for transportation.

A hair sample measuring 1.5 inches, comprising approximately 200 strands (comparable to the girth of a #2 pencil) near the scalp, yields 100mg, which is the ideal quantity for both initial and confirmatory testing. For EtG, additional tests, and tests beyond 10 panels, 150mg of the sample is advisable. We advocate for measuring the specimen using a jeweler’s scale. In the absence of scalp hair, the collection of an equivalent quantity of body hair is an option. “Head hair” specifically refers to scalp hair, whereas “body hair” encompasses all other hair types (like facial, axillary, etc.).

Process Overview

The laboratory handling of a drug test result encompasses four primary steps: Accessioning, Screening, Extraction, and Confirmation.

Accessioning is the preliminary step of integrating a sample into a lab’s framework. This step confirms whether the sample was suitably sealed and shipped, allocates a random LAN (Laboratory Accessioning Number), and concludes any further data entry omitted by an electronic chain of custody system.

Screening offers an initial rapid assessment for substances of abuse. Though Screening provides a cost-efficient approach to exclude drug usage for the bulk of samples, a positive outcome must undergo confirmation to be legally valid. All samples yielding a tentative positive in Screening mandate subsequent verification.

Upon a presumptive positive result in the Screening phase, extra hair is extracted from the original specimen for the Extraction process. At this juncture, drugs are extracted from the hair at a notably lower concentration than in alternative methods (such as urine or oral fluid), rendering hair drug analysis the most challenging method to execute.

Any positive results from the Screening are confirmed using techniques like GC/MS, GC/MS/MS, or LC/MS/MS. Prior to Confirmation, any samples with presumptive positives undergo washing. Every phase of the laboratory process from Accessioning to Confirmation is scrutinized under both the CAP (College of American Pathologists) Hair guidelines and compliance with ISO / IEC 17025 accreditation standards.

Advantages of hair drug testing:

  • Extended detection duration: Hair drug assessments can identify drug usage up to 90 days, whereas urine assessments provide a briefer detection span.
  • Resistance to manipulation: Hair drug analyses are notably challenging to deceive, ensuring the accuracy of the outcomes.
  • Chronological usage information: They offer an overview of drug usage patterns over a certain timeframe, instead of merely indicating recent use.

Limitations:

  • Inability to identify recent usage: Detection of drugs in hair takes about 5-7 days.
  • Expense: Hair drug evaluations tend to be pricier compared to other drug testing modalities.
  • Inconsistencies in results: Elements like hair color and personal discrepancies in hair growth may influence the concentration of drug metabolites within hair.

Note: The term "hair follicle tests" is commonly used, but the test itself assesses the hair strand rather than the follicle beneath the scalp.

Frequently Asked Questions

A hair follicle drug test analyzes a small sample of hair to detect a history of drug use over time. Because drug metabolites are incorporated into hair as it grows, this method can show patterns of use instead of just recent exposure. It is frequently used for legal and court requirements, long-term monitoring, and high-trust workforce screening.
Standard hair drug testing typically reflects drug use over approximately a 90-day period, based on the length of hair collected at the time of testing. Longer hair can sometimes reflect a longer time frame, and extremely short hair can reduce that window.
Hair drug testing commonly screens for marijuana/THC, cocaine, opiates/opioids, amphetamines/methamphetamines, and PCP. In many cases, additional expanded panels may be requested to include other substances.
Yes. If the donor's head hair is too short or unavailable, body hair may be collected as an alternative. The collector will document the source of the sample. This allows testing even for individuals with recently cut or shaved head hair.
Yes. Hair drug testing is commonly used in court, probation, custody, and compliance matters because the collection process follows a documented chain of custody and the analysis is performed by a certified laboratory. Results are provided in a form that can be reviewed by legal and administrative authorities.
Yes. Individuals, parents, attorneys, employers, and probation programs can all request hair drug testing. A doctor's order is not required. Results are confidential and released only to the authorized requesting party.
Hair testing provides a longer look-back period than urine testing, making it useful when you need to demonstrate ongoing abstinence or identify repeated/recent substance use patterns over time rather than just recent exposure. It is frequently selected for legal, compliance, and custody-related documentation.
A small section of hair is cut by a trained collector in a discreet, controlled manner. The sample is sealed, documented, and sent to the laboratory under established chain-of-custody procedures so that the results can be defended if they are ever challenged.
