Accredited Drug Testing provides comprehensive hair follicle drug tests in Shelocta, Pennsylvania. If you require a hair drug or alcohol test, Accredited Drug Testing is your expert in hair testing, with locations nationwide ready to conduct the test. Hair from the crown measuring 1.5 to 2 inches, or body hair, is typically used. Hair testing can detect drugs, alcohol/ETG, and offer various custom options.

In recent years, drug test methods have increasingly featured hair follicle testing. Employers, courts, and substance abuse experts now often favor hair drug tests over standard urine tests. Employers with zero-tolerance policies, judicial systems, and probation services utilize hair testing. The main advantage of a hair test is its extended drug detection window, up to 90 days, observed during collection, and difficult to falsify. Yet, for screening drug use in the past 5 days, urine tests remain most accurate.

What it is, How it works

Hair testing has increasingly become recognized as an effective means for identifying drug and alcohol consumption. Hair records a long-term history of alcohol and drugs by capturing biomarkers within the fibers of the hair growth strand. When taken from near the scalp, hair can provide an approximately 3-month detection window for alcohol and drugs. Collecting hair is straightforward, relatively tamper-resistant, and easy to send.

A sample measuring 1.5 inches of around 200 hair strands (comparable to #2 pencil thickness) from the scalp delivers 100mg of hair, which is the optimal amount for screening and confirmation. For EtG, add-ons, and/or panels exceeding 10, a 150mg sample is suggested. We advise weighing the sample on a jeweler's scale. If scalp hair isn't available, a similar quantity of body hair may be obtained. When mentioning head hair, we refer exclusively to scalp hair. Body hair encompasses all other types (facial, axillary, etc.).

Process Overview

The laboratory processing of a drug test result entails four main steps: Accessioning, Screening, Extraction, and Confirmation.

Accessioning entails the initial entry of a sample into the laboratory’s system. This process ensures correct sample sealing and shipping, assigns a random LAN (Laboratory Accessioning Number), and involves any remaining data entry lacking from an electronic chain of custody system.

Screening involves a preliminary quick test for drugs of abuse. Although Screening is an economical way to exclude drug usage in most samples, a positive screen must be validated to be court-admissible. Any samples appearing presumptively positive in Screening necessitate a secondary confirmation.

When a sample is indicated as positive during the Screening phase, additional hair is extracted from the original sample for Extraction. This step involves extracting drugs from hair at much lower concentrations than other methods (such as urine or oral fluid), highlighting why hair drug screening is among the most challenging methodologies.

Confirmation of any positive screening outcome is carried out via GC/MS, GC/MS/MS or LC/MS/MS. All samples presumed positive are cleansed before confirmation if necessary. The complete laboratory procedure from Accessioning to Confirmation is examined under the CAP (College of American Pathologists) Hair qualification and the compliance to ISO / IEC 17025 criteria.

Advantages of hair drug testing:

  • Extended detection window: Hair drug tests can identify drug usage for up to 90 days, unlike urine tests with a shorter detection span.
  • Hard to manipulate: Cheating a hair drug test is extremely difficult, improving result reliability.
  • Offers historical usage data: It reveals a pattern of drug usage over time, not solely recent consumption.

Limitations:

  • Cannot detect recent consumption: A period of approximately 5-7 days is required for drugs to be traceable in hair.
  • Expense: Hair drug tests generally incur higher costs than other drug testing techniques.
  • Result variation: Factors like hair color and individual hair growth discrepancies can impact drug metabolite levels in the hair.

Note: Commonly referred to as "hair follicle tests," the test in actuality analyzes the hair strand, not the follicle located beneath the scalp.

Frequently Asked Questions

A hair follicle drug test analyzes a small sample of hair to detect a history of drug use over time. Because drug metabolites are incorporated into hair as it grows, this method can show patterns of use instead of just recent exposure. It is frequently used for legal and court requirements, long-term monitoring, and high-trust workforce screening.
Standard hair drug testing typically reflects drug use over approximately a 90-day period, based on the length of hair collected at the time of testing. Longer hair can sometimes reflect a longer time frame, and extremely short hair can reduce that window.
Hair drug testing commonly screens for marijuana/THC, cocaine, opiates/opioids, amphetamines/methamphetamines, and PCP. In many cases, additional expanded panels may be requested to include other substances.
Yes. If the donor's head hair is too short or unavailable, body hair may be collected as an alternative. The collector will document the source of the sample. This allows testing even for individuals with recently cut or shaved head hair.
Yes. Hair drug testing is commonly used in court, probation, custody, and compliance matters because the collection process follows a documented chain of custody and the analysis is performed by a certified laboratory. Results are provided in a form that can be reviewed by legal and administrative authorities.
Yes. Individuals, parents, attorneys, employers, and probation programs can all request hair drug testing. A doctor's order is not required. Results are confidential and released only to the authorized requesting party.
Hair testing provides a longer look-back period than urine testing, making it useful when you need to demonstrate ongoing abstinence or identify repeated/recent substance use patterns over time rather than just recent exposure. It is frequently selected for legal, compliance, and custody-related documentation.
A small section of hair is cut by a trained collector in a discreet, controlled manner. The sample is sealed, documented, and sent to the laboratory under established chain-of-custody procedures so that the results can be defended if they are ever challenged.
