Accredited Drug Testing offers thorough hair follicle drug assessments in Scranton, Pennsylvania. For those needing either a hair drug or alcohol examination, we are experts in hair-based diagnostics with testing centers available across all cities in the nation. Typically, 1.5 to 2 inches of hair from the crown or body are required. Hair analysis can reveal presence of drugs, alcohol/ETG, or be customized for other options.

In recent times, hair follicle drug evaluations have seen increased adoption in drug testing procedures. Employers, judicial systems, and substance misuse specialists are opting for hair evaluations over traditional urine tests. Particularly favored by institutions enforcing zero-tolerance policies and supervising probationary periods, hair folicle tests provide benefits like extended drug use detection periods of up to 90 days, secured observation during collection, and near impossibility of evasion. Nonetheless, for very recent drug use—under five days—urine tests remain the gold standard.

What it is, How it works

Hair analysis is increasingly recognized as an effective method for identifying drug and alcohol consumption. Hair retains long-term evidence of alcohol and drugs by embedding markers within the strands of growing hair. When taken near the scalp, hair can offer a detection timeframe of up to around three months for alcohol and drugs. Hair is straightforward to obtain, relatively challenging to tamper with, and simple to transport.

A sample measuring 1.5 inches, consisting of roughly 200 hair strands (comparable to the width of a #2 pencil) nearest the scalp yields 100mg, providing the perfect amount for evaluation and validation. For EtG, additional analyses, and/or more extensive tests beyond 10 panels, 150mg of the sample is advisable. Utilizing a jeweler’s scale for weighing is suggested. If scalp hair is unavailable, a similar quantity of body hair can be used. When mentioning head hair, it specifically means scalp hair. Body hair encompasses all other hair varieties (facial, underarm, etc.).

Process Overview

The primary four stages in the lab processing of a drug test outcome include Accessioning, Screening, Extraction, and Confirmation.

Accessioning encompasses the initial incorporation of a sample into the lab's system. This involves checking that the sample was properly sealed and sent, generating a random LAN (Laboratory Accessioning Number), and finishing any additional data input not covered by an electronic chain of custody system.

Screening acts as a preliminary rapid test for substance abuse. Although Screening is a budget-friendly means to discount drug usage for most samples, a conclusive screening needs confirmation to hold up in legal settings. Samples that are tentatively positive in Screening necessitate a follow-up verification.

If a sample is tentatively positive during Screening, more hair is extracted from the original sample for Extraction. During this step, substances are isolated from hair at notably lower concentrations than in other methods (such as urine or oral fluid), which makes hair drug testing the most intricate methodology to execute.

Verification of any positive screening outcome is carried out using GC/MS, GC/MS/MS, or LC/MS/MS. All tentatively positive samples undergo washing before verification as required. The entire laboratory process from Accessioning to Verification is assessed under both the CAP (College of American Pathologists) Hair designation and the accreditation to ISO / IEC 17025 standards.

Advantages of hair drug testing:

  • Extended detection period: Hair drug analyses can detect drug use for a duration of up to 90 days, unlike urine tests which have a shorter detection span.
  • Difficult to deceive: It is notably challenging to manipulate a hair drug analysis, ensuring more precise outcomes.
  • Supplies historical patterns: It can reveal a pattern of substance use over time, not just recent consumption.

Limitations:

  • Cannot identify recent consumption: Drugs take about 5-7 days to be traceable in hair.
  • Expense: Hair drug analyses are generally pricier than other drug analysis methods.
  • Variability in results: Elements like hair color and personal differences in hair growth may impact the level of drug metabolites in the hair.

Note: Even though termed "hair follicle tests," the procedure actually examines the hair strand rather than the follicle beneath the scalp.

Why Hair Follicle Testing Beats Urine Testing

In Scranton, PA, hair follicle testing provides a clear advantage over traditional urine testing. Superior detection accuracy is a significant benefit, as hair tests are less prone to evasion, unlike urine tests which are more easily manipulated. Employers favor hair tests for their reliability and extensive detection window, ensuring a comprehensive substance use overview.

Frequently Asked Questions

A hair follicle drug test analyzes a small sample of hair to detect a history of drug use over time. Because drug metabolites are incorporated into hair as it grows, this method can show patterns of use instead of just recent exposure. It is frequently used for legal and court requirements, long-term monitoring, and high-trust workforce screening.
Standard hair drug testing typically reflects drug use over approximately a 90-day period, based on the length of hair collected at the time of testing. Longer hair can sometimes reflect a longer time frame, and extremely short hair can reduce that window.
Hair drug testing commonly screens for marijuana/THC, cocaine, opiates/opioids, amphetamines/methamphetamines, and PCP. In many cases, additional expanded panels may be requested to include other substances.
Yes. If the donor's head hair is too short or unavailable, body hair may be collected as an alternative. The collector will document the source of the sample. This allows testing even for individuals with recently cut or shaved head hair.
Yes. Hair drug testing is commonly used in court, probation, custody, and compliance matters because the collection process follows a documented chain of custody and the analysis is performed by a certified laboratory. Results are provided in a form that can be reviewed by legal and administrative authorities.
Yes. Individuals, parents, attorneys, employers, and probation programs can all request hair drug testing. A doctor's order is not required. Results are confidential and released only to the authorized requesting party.
Hair testing provides a longer look-back period than urine testing, making it useful when you need to demonstrate ongoing abstinence or identify repeated/recent substance use patterns over time rather than just recent exposure. It is frequently selected for legal, compliance, and custody-related documentation.
A small section of hair is cut by a trained collector in a discreet, controlled manner. The sample is sealed, documented, and sent to the laboratory under established chain-of-custody procedures so that the results can be defended if they are ever challenged.
