Accredited Drug Testing offers comprehensive hair follicle drug examinations at Messiah College, Pennsylvania. If you're in need of a hair drug or alcohol screening, Accredited Drug Testing is renowned for its hair testing expertise, and testing facilities are available in cities across the country for this purpose. Generally, 1.5 to 2 inches of hair from the scalp or body is required. The tests can assess drugs, alcohol/ETG, or other personalized hair test options.

In recent times, hair follicle drug testing has increasingly become a favored method for drug detection. Numerous employers, judicial systems, and Substance Abuse specialists now opt for hair drug tests over the traditional urine-based tests. This choice is prevalent among employers with strict no-drug policies, the judiciary, and probationary individuals. Hair follicle drug tests provide the essential benefit of an extended detection timeframe, typically covering up to 90 days, conducted under supervision, making it virtually uncheatable. However, for detecting drug use within the preceding five days, urine tests remain the gold standard.

What it is, How it works

Hair analysis is now recognized as an effective resource for identifying drug and alcohol consumption. Hair captures a chronic timeline of alcohol and drug exposure by embedding biomarkers within the strands of growing hair. Samples taken proximate to the scalp can indicate a detection timeframe of up to about three months for alcohol and drugs. Hair is straightforward to collect and is relatively resistant to tampering, making it easy to dispatch.

A 1.5-inch sample containing around 200 hairs (comparable in size to a #2 pencil) nearest the scalp yields 100mg of hair, providing the optimal amount for both screening and verification. For EtG, additional tests, or capabilities exceeding 10 panels, 150mg of hair is advisable. Using a jeweler’s scale to measure the sample is recommended. Should scalp hair be unattainable, an equivalent measure of body hair is acceptable. When discussing head hair, we specifically imply scalp hair. Body hair encompasses all other types (such as facial or axillary hair).

Process Overview

The drug testing laboratory handles results through four principal stages: Accessioning, Screening, Extraction, and Confirmation.

Accessioning encompasses the primary procedure of integrating a sample into the lab's system. This process checks that the sample was securely sealed and correctly shipped, assigns it a random LAN (Laboratory Accessioning Number), and concludes any outstanding information entry not completed by an electronic custody tracking system.

Screening offers a preliminary comprehensive check for drug abuse indications. Although Screening is a cost-efficient method for eliminating drug usage in most samples, a positive result necessitates confirmation to be valid in legal contexts. Samples that initially present positive indications during Screening must undergo secondary verification.

Upon a positive indication in the Screening phase, additional hair from the sample is required and prepared for Extraction. During this phase, drugs are drawn from hair at a notably lower concentration than other methods (such as urine or oral fluid), accounting for why hair drug testing is the most challenging methodology to execute.

Verification of any positive Screen findings is implemented with GC/MS, GC/MS/MS, or LC/MS/MS. Presumptive positive samples undergo necessary cleaning prior to verification. The complete process from Accessioning to Confirmation undergoes evaluation under the CAP (College of American Pathologists) Hair certification and ISO / IEC 17025 accreditation.

Advantages of hair drug testing:

  • Extended detection period: Hair tests can reveal drug consumption up to 90 days, unlike urine tests which have briefer detection span.
  • Difficult to manipulate: Cheating a hair drug test is challenging, rendering results more credible.
  • Offers historical insight: It highlights trends of drug consumption over time, not merely recent use.

Limitations:

  • Incapable of detecting recent use: Drugs become detectable in hair after around 5-7 days.
  • Expense: Hair drug tests are typically costlier than alternative testing strategies.
  • Result variability: Hair color and personal hair growth differences may impact drug metabolite concentration in the hair.

Note: Although frequently called "hair follicle tests", the analysis targets the hair strand rather than the follicle under the skin.

Frequently Asked Questions

A hair follicle drug test analyzes a small sample of hair to detect a history of drug use over time. Because drug metabolites are incorporated into hair as it grows, this method can show patterns of use instead of just recent exposure. It is frequently used for legal and court requirements, long-term monitoring, and high-trust workforce screening.
Standard hair drug testing typically reflects drug use over approximately a 90-day period, based on the length of hair collected at the time of testing. Longer hair can sometimes reflect a longer time frame, and extremely short hair can reduce that window.
Hair drug testing commonly screens for marijuana/THC, cocaine, opiates/opioids, amphetamines/methamphetamines, and PCP. In many cases, additional expanded panels may be requested to include other substances.
Yes. If the donor's head hair is too short or unavailable, body hair may be collected as an alternative. The collector will document the source of the sample. This allows testing even for individuals with recently cut or shaved head hair.
Yes. Hair drug testing is commonly used in court, probation, custody, and compliance matters because the collection process follows a documented chain of custody and the analysis is performed by a certified laboratory. Results are provided in a form that can be reviewed by legal and administrative authorities.
Yes. Individuals, parents, attorneys, employers, and probation programs can all request hair drug testing. A doctor's order is not required. Results are confidential and released only to the authorized requesting party.
Hair testing provides a longer look-back period than urine testing, making it useful when you need to demonstrate ongoing abstinence or identify repeated/recent substance use patterns over time rather than just recent exposure. It is frequently selected for legal, compliance, and custody-related documentation.
A small section of hair is cut by a trained collector in a discreet, controlled manner. The sample is sealed, documented, and sent to the laboratory under established chain-of-custody procedures so that the results can be defended if they are ever challenged.
