In Lynnwood, PA, Accredited Drug Testing offers comprehensive hair follicle drug tests. If a hair or alcohol screening is necessary, our specialization in hair analysis ensures accessibility, with testing facilities across every city Nationwide ready to conduct a hair assessment. Generally, 1.5 to 2 inches of head or body hair is needed. Our tests analyze substances including drugs and alcohol/ETG, along with other personalized options.

Recently, hair follicle drug testing has become a more popular choice for drug detection. Employers, legal systems, and addiction specialists often prefer hair tests over traditional urine samples. Hair analysis is chosen by firms with strict no-drug policies, the judiciary, and probation offices. The key advantage is a much longer detection window, usually up to 90 days. Collected with direct observation, it minimizes tampering and remains unrivaled except in detecting recent use, where urine samples remain supreme within a 5-day usage history.

What it is, How it works

Hair examinations are increasingly recognized as an effective method for identifying drug and alcohol consumption. Hair captures a longer history of substance use by enclosing biomarkers within the strands of the growing hair. When taken from near the scalp, hair can offer approximately a 3-month detection timeline for substances. Hair is straightforward to acquire, somewhat resistant to tampering, and simple to transport.

A 1.5-inch segment consisting of roughly 200 hair strands (about the size of a #2 pencil) nearest the scalp yields 100mg of hair, which is the optimal sample for both screening and confirmation. For EtG, additional tests, and/or analyses exceeding 10 panels, 150mg of the sample is suggested. We advise using a jeweler’s scale to weigh the specimen. If scalp hair is not available, an equivalent amount of body hair can be gathered. When we mention head hair, we mean scalp hair specifically. 'Body hair' refers to all other varieties (facial, axillary, etc.).

Process Overview

The laboratory processing of drug test results includes four primary steps: Accessioning, Screening, Extraction, and Confirmation.

Accessioning constitutes the initial processing phase of a sample into a lab's system. This involves checking that the sample was properly sealed and dispatched, assigning a random LAN (Laboratory Accessioning Number), and completing any extra data inputs not covered by an electronic chain of custody system.

Screening provides an initial swift check for commonly abused substances. While Screening is an economical way to rule out drug use in most cases, any positive results require confirmation to be accepted legally. All samples that show presumptive positives in Screening need further verification.

For a sample that shows presumptive positivity during Screening, additional hair is taken from the original sample and readied for Extraction. Here, drugs are retrieved from hair at significantly lower concentrations compared to other methods (such as urine or oral fluid), making hair drug screening one of the most challenging methods to execute.

Verification of any positive screening outcome is completed using GC/MS, GC/MS/MS, or LC/MS/MS. Every presumptive positive sample undergoes washing before confirmation as needed. The whole lab process from Accessioning to Confirmation is evaluated under CAP (College of American Pathologists) Hair designation and certified to ISO/IEC 17025 standards.

Advantages of hair drug testing:

  • Extended detection period: Hair drug examinations can uncover substance use for up to 90 days, as opposed to urine tests which offer a shorter detection frame.
  • Hard to deceive: The difficulty in cheating a hair drug test makes the outcomes more reliable.
  • Offers historical context: It can outline a pattern of substance use over time, not just recent consumption.

Limitations:

  • Cannot spot recent consumption: It takes around 5-7 days for drugs to become traceable in hair.
  • Expense: Hair drug tests usually cost more than other drug testing techniques.
  • Inconsistencies in results: Elements like hair color and personal differences in hair growth can alter the concentration of drug metabolites in the hair.

Note: Although frequently called "hair follicle tests," the analysis focuses on the hair strand, not the follicle underneath the scalp.

Frequently Asked Questions

A hair follicle drug test analyzes a small sample of hair to detect a history of drug use over time. Because drug metabolites are incorporated into hair as it grows, this method can show patterns of use instead of just recent exposure. It is frequently used for legal and court requirements, long-term monitoring, and high-trust workforce screening.
Standard hair drug testing typically reflects drug use over approximately a 90-day period, based on the length of hair collected at the time of testing. Longer hair can sometimes reflect a longer time frame, and extremely short hair can reduce that window.
Hair drug testing commonly screens for marijuana/THC, cocaine, opiates/opioids, amphetamines/methamphetamines, and PCP. In many cases, additional expanded panels may be requested to include other substances.
Yes. If the donor's head hair is too short or unavailable, body hair may be collected as an alternative. The collector will document the source of the sample. This allows testing even for individuals with recently cut or shaved head hair.
Yes. Hair drug testing is commonly used in court, probation, custody, and compliance matters because the collection process follows a documented chain of custody and the analysis is performed by a certified laboratory. Results are provided in a form that can be reviewed by legal and administrative authorities.
Yes. Individuals, parents, attorneys, employers, and probation programs can all request hair drug testing. A doctor's order is not required. Results are confidential and released only to the authorized requesting party.
Hair testing provides a longer look-back period than urine testing, making it useful when you need to demonstrate ongoing abstinence or identify repeated/recent substance use patterns over time rather than just recent exposure. It is frequently selected for legal, compliance, and custody-related documentation.
A small section of hair is cut by a trained collector in a discreet, controlled manner. The sample is sealed, documented, and sent to the laboratory under established chain-of-custody procedures so that the results can be defended if they are ever challenged.
