In Lebanon, Pennsylvania, Accredited Drug Testing offers comprehensive hair follicle drug testing services. Whether it's for hair drugs or alcohol tests, our expertise in hair testing and nationwide center availability ensure that hair tests are accessible in every city. Typically requiring 1.5 to 2 inches of hair, samples can be taken from either the head or body. Hair tests provide analysis for drugs, alcohol/ETG, and other targeted testing options.

In recent years, hair follicle drug testing has emerged as a popular method for drug screening. Employers, courts, and Substance Abuse professionals now often prefer hair tests over traditional urine tests. Hair follicle tests are favored by zero-tolerance employers, courtroom procedures, and probation monitoring. Their main advantage is an extended detection window, up to 90 days, collected under direct observation, making tampering nearly impossible. However, for detecting recent drug use within the last 5 days, urine tests remain more precise.

What it is, How it works

Hair testing is recognized as an effective means of identifying alcohol and drug consumption. Strands of hair serve as a chronicling repository, encapsulating markers that indicate the presence of alcohol and drugs within the growing hair fiber. A sample gathered from close to the scalp can reveal alcohol and drug usage over an approximate ninety-day period. Hair sampling is straightforward, challenging to mask, and convenient for transportation.

A specimen of 1.5 inches, composed of roughly 200 hair stands (similar in size to a #2 pencil), provides 100mg, which is optimal for analysis and verification. For EtG, additional tests, and/or analyses exceeding 10 panels, a 150mg sample is advisable. Utilizing a jeweler’s scale to measure the hair sample's weight is advised. If scalp hair isn't accessible, an identical amount of body hair may be substituted. Reference to head hair pertains exclusively to scalp hair, while body hair encompasses all other forms (facial, axillary, etc.).

Process Overview

The laboratory drug testing process is broken down into four principal phases: Accessioning, Screening, Extraction, and Confirmation.

Accessioning denotes the preliminary processing of a sample within a lab system. This entails confirming that the sample is securely sealed and properly shipped, issuing a unique LAN (Laboratory Accessioning Number), and fulfilling any ancillary data entry tasks not completed through an electronic chain of custody framework.

Screening involves an initial rudimentary examination for substances of abuse. Screening is an economical way to test for drug presence on most samples, though positive results necessitate confirmation to be valid in legal settings. Samples yielding a presumptive positive result during Screening must undergo secondary confirmation.

Should a sample yield a presumptive positive result during Screening, additional hair is harvested from the initial sample for Extraction. In this procedure, drugs are extracted from hair at significantly lower concentrations than alternative methods (e.g., urine or oral fluids), underscoring the complexity of conducting hair drug tests.

Confirmation of presumptive positive results is performed via GC/MS, GC/MS/MS, or LC/MS/MS. All samples with presumptive positive screening outcomes undergo washing prior to confirmation as preconditions demand. The complete processing from Accessioning to Confirmation is scrutinized under the CAP (College of American Pathologists) Hair categorization and accredited to ISO / IEC 17025 standards.

Advantages of hair drug testing:

  • Extended detection period: Hair drug tests can detect drugs up to 90 days, compared to urine tests that have a briefer detection duration.
  • High integrity: Tampering with a hair drug test result is notoriously difficult, enhancing result accuracy.
  • Historical usage data: It reveals a timeline of drug consumption, offering more than just recent data.

Limitations:

  • Delayed detection capabilities: It typically requires 5-7 days for drugs to show up in hair.
  • Expense: Hair drug tests bear higher costs relative to other testing methods.
  • Result variations: Factors like hair color and individual growth rates can influence drug metabolite concentration in hair.

Note: Although referred to as "hair follicle tests," the analysis concentrates on the hair strand itself, not the follicle beneath the scalp.

Frequently Asked Questions

A hair follicle drug test analyzes a small sample of hair to detect a history of drug use over time. Because drug metabolites are incorporated into hair as it grows, this method can show patterns of use instead of just recent exposure. It is frequently used for legal and court requirements, long-term monitoring, and high-trust workforce screening.
Standard hair drug testing typically reflects drug use over approximately a 90-day period, based on the length of hair collected at the time of testing. Longer hair can sometimes reflect a longer time frame, and extremely short hair can reduce that window.
Hair drug testing commonly screens for marijuana/THC, cocaine, opiates/opioids, amphetamines/methamphetamines, and PCP. In many cases, additional expanded panels may be requested to include other substances.
Yes. If the donor's head hair is too short or unavailable, body hair may be collected as an alternative. The collector will document the source of the sample. This allows testing even for individuals with recently cut or shaved head hair.
Yes. Hair drug testing is commonly used in court, probation, custody, and compliance matters because the collection process follows a documented chain of custody and the analysis is performed by a certified laboratory. Results are provided in a form that can be reviewed by legal and administrative authorities.
Yes. Individuals, parents, attorneys, employers, and probation programs can all request hair drug testing. A doctor's order is not required. Results are confidential and released only to the authorized requesting party.
Hair testing provides a longer look-back period than urine testing, making it useful when you need to demonstrate ongoing abstinence or identify repeated/recent substance use patterns over time rather than just recent exposure. It is frequently selected for legal, compliance, and custody-related documentation.
A small section of hair is cut by a trained collector in a discreet, controlled manner. The sample is sealed, documented, and sent to the laboratory under established chain-of-custody procedures so that the results can be defended if they are ever challenged.
