In Lancaster, Pennsylvania, Accredited Drug Testing is renowned for its comprehensive hair follicle drug testing services. Our expertise in hair testing ensures that we accommodate hair drug or alcohol testing needs, with facilities available nationwide. Generally requiring 1.5 to 2 inches of hair from the scalp or body, tests assess drugs, alcohol/ETG, or offer tailored testing solutions.

Hair follicle drug tests have seen a rise in popularity among drug testing methodologies. Employers, judicial systems, and rehabilitation experts are increasingly opting for hair tests rather than traditional urine tests. Hair tests offer a major advantage: they can detect drug use over a 90-day time frame, involve supervised sampling to prevent tampering, and are difficult to manipulate, though urine tests remain superior for identifying recent use within five days.

What it is, How it works

Hair analysis is recognized as an effective means for identifying substance and alcohol use. Hair serves as a historical record of alcohol and drug consumption, capturing biomarkers within its developing fibers. When taken near the scalp, hair may show drug and alcohol use within roughly a 3-month time span. Collection of hair is straightforward, challenging to tamper with, and convenient for shipping.

A sample measuring 1.5 inches consisting of about 200 hair strands (akin to the thickness of a #2 pencil) nearest the scalp will amount to 100mg of hair, ideal for initial testing and verification. For EtG, add-ons, and/or tests beyond 10 panels, 150mg of specimen is advised. It's recommended to assess the weight of the specimen on a jeweler's scale. If scalp hair isn't available, a comparable amount of body hair can be used. By saying head hair, we mean only scalp hair. Body hair pertains to any other hair such as facial, axillary, and the like.

Process Overview

The laboratory processing of a drug test result follows four key steps: Accessioning, Screening, Extraction, and Confirmation.

During Accessioning, the sample is initially processed within the lab's system. This phase checks the sample's proper sealing and shipping, assigns a random LAN (Laboratory Accessioning Number), and completes any additional information entry missing from an electronic chain of custody system.

Screening involves preliminary testing for drug misuse. Though Screening is an inexpensive way to eliminate drug presence in most samples, a positive result must be verified for legal admissibility. Samples that test presumptively positive in Screening require confirmatory testing.

Should a sample test presumptively positive at the Screening stage, additional hair is extracted from the sample for the Extraction process. During this phase, drugs are recovered from hair at much lower concentrations than other testing methods (e.g., urine or oral fluid), which makes hair drug analysis particularly challenging.

Verification of any positive Screening outcome is achieved via GC/MS, GC/MS/MS, or LC/MS/MS. Presumptively positive samples undergo washing prior to confirmation if necessary. The entire lab process from Accessioning to Confirmation is audited to assure compliance with both the CAP (College of American Pathologists) Hair designation and ISO / IEC 17025 standards.

Advantages of hair drug testing:

  • Extended detection period: Hair drug tests can identify drug use for up to 90 days, unlike urine tests which have a briefer detection period.
  • Resistant to manipulation: Hair drug tests are challenging to falsify, enhancing result accuracy.
  • Offers historical insight: It shows drug usage patterns over time, beyond recent usage only.

Limitations:

  • Misses recent use: Drugs only become detectable in hair after about 5-7 days.
  • Costly: Hair drug testing generally incurs higher costs compared to alternative testing methods.
  • Outcome discrepancies: Variables like hair color and individual hair growth rates can influence drug metabolite levels in hair.

Note: Frequently termed as "hair follicle tests," the evaluation is conducted on the hair strand, excluding the follicle beneath the scalp.

Why Hair Follicle Testing Beats Urine Testing

Hair follicle testing in Lancaster, PA, demonstrates its clear superiority over traditional urine tests by offering an expansive window of detection. Frequently Asked Questions

A hair follicle drug test analyzes a small sample of hair to detect a history of drug use over time. Because drug metabolites are incorporated into hair as it grows, this method can show patterns of use instead of just recent exposure. It is frequently used for legal and court requirements, long-term monitoring, and high-trust workforce screening.
Standard hair drug testing typically reflects drug use over approximately a 90-day period, based on the length of hair collected at the time of testing. Longer hair can sometimes reflect a longer time frame, and extremely short hair can reduce that window.
Hair drug testing commonly screens for marijuana/THC, cocaine, opiates/opioids, amphetamines/methamphetamines, and PCP. In many cases, additional expanded panels may be requested to include other substances.
Yes. If the donor's head hair is too short or unavailable, body hair may be collected as an alternative. The collector will document the source of the sample. This allows testing even for individuals with recently cut or shaved head hair.
Yes. Hair drug testing is commonly used in court, probation, custody, and compliance matters because the collection process follows a documented chain of custody and the analysis is performed by a certified laboratory. Results are provided in a form that can be reviewed by legal and administrative authorities.
Yes. Individuals, parents, attorneys, employers, and probation programs can all request hair drug testing. A doctor's order is not required. Results are confidential and released only to the authorized requesting party.
Hair testing provides a longer look-back period than urine testing, making it useful when you need to demonstrate ongoing abstinence or identify repeated/recent substance use patterns over time rather than just recent exposure. It is frequently selected for legal, compliance, and custody-related documentation.
A small section of hair is cut by a trained collector in a discreet, controlled manner. The sample is sealed, documented, and sent to the laboratory under established chain-of-custody procedures so that the results can be defended if they are ever challenged.
