Accredited Drug Testing offers comprehensive hair follicle drug assessments in Hopwood, Pennsylvania. If you need a hair-based drug or alcohol analysis, our expertise in hair tests is unmatched, and with facilities across the nation, our centers can conduct these tests efficiently. The recommended hair length on the head is 1.5 to 2 inches, although body hair can also be analyzed. Our tests can identify drugs, alcohol/ETG, or be customized for other testing needs.

Recent trends in drug assessments have increasingly favored hair follicle tests. Employers, judicial systems, and substance abuse specialists are opting for this over traditional urine tests. Zero-tolerance organizations, courts, and probation authorities consider it ideal. Its key advantage is its prolonged 90-day detection capability, collected under supervised conditions, making it almost impossible to falsify. Nevertheless, urinalysis remains preferred for detection within the past 5 days.

What it is, How it works

Recognized as an effective method, hair testing is used to identify drug and alcohol consumption. Hair can offer a prolonged record of substances by capturing biomarkers within the strands as they grow. When taken close to the scalp, hair can provide a detection period of up to three months for substances. It's straightforward to collect, a bit challenging to tamper with, and convenient to send.

A 1.5-inch group of around 200 hair strands (comparable to a #2 pencil in size) nearest the scalp yields 100mg of hair, which is the optimum sample for analysis. For EtG, additional tests, or tests involving more than 10 panels, a specimen of 150mg is suggested. We recommend weighing the sample with a jeweler’s scale. Should scalp hair not be accessible, a comparable amount of body hair can be collected. References to head hair specifically mean scalp hair. Body hair encompasses all other types (such as facial and axillary hair).

Process Overview

The procedure for processing a drug test result in a lab includes these four main stages: Accessioning, Screening, Extraction, and Confirmation.

Accessioning entails the initial entry of a sample into the lab's system. This step confirms the proper sealing and shipping of the sample, assigns it a LAN (Laboratory Accessioning Number), and completes any data entry not supplied by electronic custody systems.

Screening is a preliminary and quick assessment for common drugs. Although it serves as an economical method to eliminate drug presence in most samples, a positive screen must be confirmed to hold up legally. Any samples that screen as presumptively positive need further confirmation.

If a sample screens as presumptively positive, additional hair is extracted from the initial sample for the Extraction process. This stage involves extracting drugs at lower concentrations than other methods (like urine or oral fluid), thus making hair drug screening a complex methodology.

Confirmation of a positive screening is done using GC/MS, GC/MS/MS, or LC/MS/MS. Presumed positive samples are washed before confirmation. The comprehensive lab process, from Accessioning to Confirmation, adheres to the CAP (College of American Pathologists) Hair designation and conforms to ISO / IEC 17025 standards.

Advantages of hair drug testing:

  • Extended detection period: Hair tests can detect drugs for up to 90 days, while urine tests offer a shorter span.
  • Harder to manipulate: Cheating a hair drug test is extremely challenging, enhancing accuracy.
  • Tracks consistent use: Offers insight into long-term drug consumption patterns, unlike other tests.

Limitations:

  • Recent use undetectable: Drugs appear in hair approximately 5-7 days after use.
  • Expense: Hair drug tests tend to be pricier than other types of drug testing.
  • Result consistency: Variability in factors like hair color and individual hair growth can influence metabolite concentrations.

Note: Although often called "hair follicle tests", these tests analyze strands rather than the follicle beneath the skin.

Frequently Asked Questions

A hair follicle drug test analyzes a small sample of hair to detect a history of drug use over time. Because drug metabolites are incorporated into hair as it grows, this method can show patterns of use instead of just recent exposure. It is frequently used for legal and court requirements, long-term monitoring, and high-trust workforce screening.
Standard hair drug testing typically reflects drug use over approximately a 90-day period, based on the length of hair collected at the time of testing. Longer hair can sometimes reflect a longer time frame, and extremely short hair can reduce that window.
Hair drug testing commonly screens for marijuana/THC, cocaine, opiates/opioids, amphetamines/methamphetamines, and PCP. In many cases, additional expanded panels may be requested to include other substances.
Yes. If the donor's head hair is too short or unavailable, body hair may be collected as an alternative. The collector will document the source of the sample. This allows testing even for individuals with recently cut or shaved head hair.
Yes. Hair drug testing is commonly used in court, probation, custody, and compliance matters because the collection process follows a documented chain of custody and the analysis is performed by a certified laboratory. Results are provided in a form that can be reviewed by legal and administrative authorities.
Yes. Individuals, parents, attorneys, employers, and probation programs can all request hair drug testing. A doctor's order is not required. Results are confidential and released only to the authorized requesting party.
Hair testing provides a longer look-back period than urine testing, making it useful when you need to demonstrate ongoing abstinence or identify repeated/recent substance use patterns over time rather than just recent exposure. It is frequently selected for legal, compliance, and custody-related documentation.
A small section of hair is cut by a trained collector in a discreet, controlled manner. The sample is sealed, documented, and sent to the laboratory under established chain-of-custody procedures so that the results can be defended if they are ever challenged.
