Providing thorough hair follicle drug testing services in Harrisburg, Pennsylvania, Accredited Drug Testing is the go-to solution for hair drug or alcohol screenings. Whether in our local or any nationwide centers, if you need a hair test, we've got you covered. A hair length of 1.5 to 2 inches from your head or body is typically required. Our hair tests can identify drugs, alcohol/ETG, or customized options tailored to your needs.

Recently, the hair follicle drug test method has gained popularity in drug testing. Instead of relying solely on standard urine tests, many employers, courts, and Substance Abuse professionals now prefer hair drug tests. Employers with zero-tolerance policies, courts, and probation officers utilize these tests for their extended detection period of up to 90 days. While urine tests remain the most accurate for drug use in the last 5 days, hair tests are nearly foolproof and ensure accurate, observed sample collection.

What it is, How it works

Hair analysis is regarded as a robust method for detecting drug and alcohol consumption. Hair offers an extended history of substance use by conserving biomarkers within the strands of hair as it grows. When hair is sampled near the scalp, it can show a detection range of up to three months for alcohol and drugs. It is straightforward to gather, resistant to tampering, and simple to transport.

A hair sample of 1.5 inches, containing roughly 200 strands (approximately the thickness of a #2 pencil) near the scalp, provides about 100mg of hair, which is an ideal amount for both screening and verification. For tests involving EtG, extras, and/or exceeding 10 panels, 150mg of the sample is advised. We suggest utilizing a jeweler’s scale to measure the sample. Should scalp hair be unavailable, a similar amount of body hair might be utilized. When mentioning head hair, we specifically mean scalp hair. Body hair pertains to all other types like facial and axillary hair.

Process Overview

The four principal stages in the lab processing of drug test results include Accessioning, Screening, Extraction, and Confirmation.

Accessioning consists of the initial integration of a sample into the laboratory system. This involves verifying the sample's proper sealing and shipping, assigning a random Laboratory Accessioning Number (LAN), and completing any extra data entry absent in an electronic chain of custody.

Screening is a preliminary check for abused substances. Although Screening is a cost-efficient method to exclude drug usage in most samples, any positive screen must be confirmed to stand up in legal circumstances. Samples that are presumptively positive in Screening necessitate a secondary verification.

If Screening suggests a positive result, additional hair is taken from the original sample and readied for Extraction. In Extraction, drugs are derived from hair at significantly lower concentrations compared to other methodologies like urine or oral fluid, making hair drug screening one of the most complex methodologies.

The Confirmation of all positive screening results employs techniques such as GC/MS, GC/MS/MS, or LC/MS/MS. Before Confirmation, all presumptive positive samples are cleansed as needed. The entire lab process from Accessioning to Confirmation is scrutinized under CAP (College of American Pathologists) Hair criteria and accreditation to ISO / IEC 17025 standards.

Advantages of hair drug testing:

  • Extended detection period: Hair drug tests can identify drug use for up to 90 days, in contrast to urine tests which offer a shorter detection period.
  • High level of accuracy: Attempting to cheat a hair drug test is extremely challenging, resulting in more precise outcomes.
  • Provides chronological data: It can trace a timeline of drug usage over months, not just immediate usage.

Limitations:

  • Not suitable for recent usage: Drugs become detectable in hair only after about 5-7 days.
  • Expense: Hair drug tests tend to cost more compared to other testing methods.
  • Result variability: Elements like hair pigmentation and individual hair growth differences can influence drug metabolite concentrations.

Note: Though commonly known as "hair follicle tests", this test examines the hair strand itself, not the follicle underneath the scalp.

Why Hair Follicle Testing Beats Urine Testing

Why does hair follicle testing excel over urine testing in Harrisburg, PA? Primarily, hair tests boast superior detection capabilities, offering a greater accuracy level. These advantages consistently make hair tests a preferred option, particularly for those who require enhanced reliability. Contrastingly, traditional urine tests may fall short, especially when it comes to identifying prolonged drug use patterns.

Extended Detection Window

Employers in Harrisburg, PA benefit significantly from the extended detection window of up to 90 days offered by hair follicle testing. This testing method allows for a comprehensive overview of an applicant or employee's potential substance history. Such extended insight can be critical for making informed decisions, particularly regarding employment and maintaining a drug-free workplace environment.

Tamper-Resistant Testing Method

Hair follicle tests in Harrisburg, PA provide a fortified defense against sample tampering. Unlike other testing methods, hair tests minimize the risk of sample adulteration, ensuring that the results remain unquestionable and reliable. Frequently Asked Questions

A hair follicle drug test analyzes a small sample of hair to detect a history of drug use over time. Because drug metabolites are incorporated into hair as it grows, this method can show patterns of use instead of just recent exposure. It is frequently used for legal and court requirements, long-term monitoring, and high-trust workforce screening.
Standard hair drug testing typically reflects drug use over approximately a 90-day period, based on the length of hair collected at the time of testing. Longer hair can sometimes reflect a longer time frame, and extremely short hair can reduce that window.
Hair drug testing commonly screens for marijuana/THC, cocaine, opiates/opioids, amphetamines/methamphetamines, and PCP. In many cases, additional expanded panels may be requested to include other substances.
Yes. If the donor's head hair is too short or unavailable, body hair may be collected as an alternative. The collector will document the source of the sample. This allows testing even for individuals with recently cut or shaved head hair.
Yes. Hair drug testing is commonly used in court, probation, custody, and compliance matters because the collection process follows a documented chain of custody and the analysis is performed by a certified laboratory. Results are provided in a form that can be reviewed by legal and administrative authorities.
Yes. Individuals, parents, attorneys, employers, and probation programs can all request hair drug testing. A doctor's order is not required. Results are confidential and released only to the authorized requesting party.
Hair testing provides a longer look-back period than urine testing, making it useful when you need to demonstrate ongoing abstinence or identify repeated/recent substance use patterns over time rather than just recent exposure. It is frequently selected for legal, compliance, and custody-related documentation.
A small section of hair is cut by a trained collector in a discreet, controlled manner. The sample is sealed, documented, and sent to the laboratory under established chain-of-custody procedures so that the results can be defended if they are ever challenged.
