Accredited Drug Testing offers comprehensive hair follicle drug testing services in Glenshaw, Pennsylvania. If you need to undergo a hair drug or alcohol test, Accredited Drug Testing is an expert in hair analysis, with locations available across cities Nationwide equipped to conduct hair testing. Typically, 1.5 to 2 inches of hair from the scalp or body may be used. Tests can detect drugs, alcohol/ETG, or other specialized options.

In recent years, hair follicle drug testing has become more prevalent in the industry. Many employers, legal entities, and Substance Abuse professionals now prefer hair testing over traditional urine tests. Employers with strict drug policies, judicial systems, and probationary programs utilize hair follicle testing due to its longer drug use detection period of up to 90 days, is conducted under supervision, and is nearly foolproof. Nevertheless, for detecting drug use within the last 5 days, urine testing remains the most precise method.

What it is, How it works

Hair analysis has emerged as an effective measure for identifying drug and alcohol consumption. Hair retains a comprehensive record of alcohol and drug usage by encapsulating biomarkers within the fibers as the hair strand grows. When gathered near the scalp, hair can offer approximately a three-month detection timeline for alcohol and drugs. Hair is easy to gather, relatively challenging to tamper with, and simple to mail.

A 1.5-inch section containing around 200 hair strands (approximately the diameter of a #2 pencil) nearest to the scalp will yield 100mg of hair, which is the optimal amount for both screening and confirmation. For EtG, add-ons, and/or screenings exceeding 10 panels, a 150mg specimen is advised. It is best to weigh the specimen using a jeweler’s scale. If scalp hair is unavailable, an equivalent portion of body hair can be collected. When we discuss head hair, we mean scalp hair exclusively. Body hair encompasses all other hair types (such as facial, axillary, etc.).

Process Overview

The key stages in the laboratory handling of a drug test sample are Accessioning, Screening, Extraction, and Confirmation.

Accessioning encompasses the initial handling of a sample within a lab's framework. This step includes confirming that the sample was properly sealed and transported, assigning a random LAN (Laboratory Accessioning Number), and entering any supplementary data not available through an electronic chain of custody framework.

Screening is a preliminary rapid assessment for drugs of abuse. While Screening is an economical method to exclude drug usage in the majority of samples, a positive result necessitates confirmation for court admissibility. Samples that test presumptively positive in Screening need a subsequent confirmation.

Should a sample test presumptively positive during Screening, more hair is obtained from the original sample and prepared for Extraction. During this phase, drugs are isolated from hair at a much reduced concentration in comparison to other methods (such as urine or oral fluid), making hair drug screening the most intricate method to execute.

Any positive Screening outcomes undergo Confirmation through GC/MS, GC/MS/MS, or LC/MS/MS. All presumption-positive samples are cleansed before the confirmation process if required. The complete laboratory sequence from Accessioning to Confirmation is scrutinized under both the CAP (College of American Pathologists) Hair designation and ISO / IEC 17025 standard accreditation.

Benefits of hair drug testing:

  • Extended detection duration: Hair drug examinations can identify drug usage for up to 90 days, unlike urine tests which have a shorter detection duration.
  • Difficulty in manipulation: Manipulating a hair drug test is quite challenging, thus enhancing result accuracy.
  • Provides historical insight: It offers a usage pattern over a timeframe, not merely recent consumption.

Constraints:

  • Incapable of tracing recent consumption: It requires about 5-7 days for drugs to manifest in hair.
  • Expense: Hair drug evaluations are typically costlier than other testing techniques.
  • Result variability: Elements like hair color and individual hair growth discrepancies can impact drug metabolite concentration in hair.

Note: Although often termed "hair follicle tests", the examination focuses on the hair strand rather than the follicle beneath the scalp

Frequently Asked Questions

A hair follicle drug test analyzes a small sample of hair to detect a history of drug use over time. Because drug metabolites are incorporated into hair as it grows, this method can show patterns of use instead of just recent exposure. It is frequently used for legal and court requirements, long-term monitoring, and high-trust workforce screening.
Standard hair drug testing typically reflects drug use over approximately a 90-day period, based on the length of hair collected at the time of testing. Longer hair can sometimes reflect a longer time frame, and extremely short hair can reduce that window.
Hair drug testing commonly screens for marijuana/THC, cocaine, opiates/opioids, amphetamines/methamphetamines, and PCP. In many cases, additional expanded panels may be requested to include other substances.
Yes. If the donor's head hair is too short or unavailable, body hair may be collected as an alternative. The collector will document the source of the sample. This allows testing even for individuals with recently cut or shaved head hair.
Yes. Hair drug testing is commonly used in court, probation, custody, and compliance matters because the collection process follows a documented chain of custody and the analysis is performed by a certified laboratory. Results are provided in a form that can be reviewed by legal and administrative authorities.
Yes. Individuals, parents, attorneys, employers, and probation programs can all request hair drug testing. A doctor's order is not required. Results are confidential and released only to the authorized requesting party.
Hair testing provides a longer look-back period than urine testing, making it useful when you need to demonstrate ongoing abstinence or identify repeated/recent substance use patterns over time rather than just recent exposure. It is frequently selected for legal, compliance, and custody-related documentation.
A small section of hair is cut by a trained collector in a discreet, controlled manner. The sample is sealed, documented, and sent to the laboratory under established chain-of-custody procedures so that the results can be defended if they are ever challenged.
