Accredited Drug Testing offers extensive hair follicle drug testing services in Exton, Pennsylvania. If a hair drug or alcohol test is necessary, Accredited Drug Testing specializes in these tests and has centers in cities across the nation equipped to conduct them. In most instances, 1.5 to 2 inches of hair from the head or body is required. Hair tests can identify drugs, alcohol/ETG, or offer personalized analysis options.

In recent times, hair follicle drug testing has become the preferred method for drug screening. Many companies, legal systems, and Substance Abuse counselors are opting for hair drug tests over conventional urine tests. Employers with strict no-drug policies, judicial entities, and probationary programs utilize hair follicle drug tests. A key advantage is the extended detection period, which can last up to 90 days, administered under supervision, making it nearly foolproof. However, urine tests remain the most precise for drug use detection within the preceding 5 days.

What it is, How it works

Hair testing has emerged as an effective method for identifying drug and alcohol consumption. Hair retains a prolonged history of alcohol and other drugs by embedding biomarkers within the strands as they grow. When acquired near the scalp, hair can yield up to roughly a 3-month detection timeline for alcohol and other drugs. Hair is straightforward to gather, relatively tough to tamper with, and convenient to send.

A 1.5-inch segment comprising roughly 200 hair strands (about the diameter of a #2 pencil) closest to the scalp yields 100mg of hair, the optimal sample for both screening and verification. For EtG, additional tests, and/or tests above 10 panels, 150mg of the sample is suggested. We advise weighing the hair sample on a jeweler’s scale. If scalp hair is missing, a similar amount of body hair can be taken. When discussing head hair, we mean scalp hair only. Body hair covers all other hair categories (facial, axillary, etc.).

Process Overview

The laboratory processing of a drug test result incorporates four pivotal steps: Accessioning, Screening, Extraction, and Confirmation.

Accessioning involves initially handling a sample into a laboratory’s system. This process includes ensuring the sample was sealed and transported correctly, assigning an arbitrary LAN (Laboratory Accessioning Number), and executing any necessary data entry not already covered by an electronic chain of custody system.

Screening is an initial speedy examination for illicit drugs. While Screening is a cost-efficient method to exclude drug usage in most cases, a positive screen needs validation to be accepted in legal settings. Any samples showing positive indications in Screening require a further confirmation.

Should a sample manifest indicative positivity in the Screening phase, additional hair is drawn from the original sample and prepped for Extraction. In this process, drugs are extracted from hair at a significantly reduced concentration than other techniques (e.g., urine or saliva), making hair drug testing the most challenging method to execute.

Confirmation of any positive screen result is executed using GC/MS, GC/MS/MS, or LC/MS/MS. All samples with presumptive positivity are cleaned before confirmation as required. The entire lab process from Accessioning to Confirmation is subjected to scrutiny under both CAP (College of American Pathologists) standards for Hair and the ISO / IEC 17025 accreditation.

Advantages of hair drug testing:

  • Long detection window: Hair drug tests can uncover drug use up to 90 days, whereas urine tests offer a shorter window.
  • Difficulty to cheat: It's quite challenging to deceive a hair drug test, enhancing result accuracy.
  • Provides historical data: It reveals a usage pattern over time, not just recent activity.

Limitations:

  • Cannot detect recent use: Drugs take about 5-7 days to become detectable in hair.
  • Cost: Hair drug tests commonly cost more than other testing methods.
  • Variations in results: Variables like hair color and individual differences in hair growth can influence drug metabolite concentration in hair.

Note: Although commonly called "hair follicle tests", the examination actually analyzes the hair strand, not the follicle beneath the scalp.

Why Hair Follicle Testing Beats Urine Testing

In Exton, PA, the advantages of hair follicle testing over urine tests are notable. Hair tests provide a longer timeframe for substance detection, up to 90 days, enabling a more thorough review of an individual's drug use history. This is unmatched by urine tests, which typically offer a mere short-term view. Hair testing ensures higher reliability and accuracy, as it is resistant to adulteration, unlike urine tests that may be tampered with easily.

Furthermore, hair testing excels in identifying continuous or sporadic substance use patterns over time, providing invaluable insights for employers focused on maintaining a drug-free workplace. Its improved accuracy and resistance to manipulation make it a preferred choice for those concerned with quality and thoroughness in drug testing protocols.

Extended Detection Window

Hair follicle testing in Exton, PA, offers an unparalleled detection window, capable of revealing drug usage over a span of up to 90 days. This extended timeframe allows employers to gain an understanding of a candidate or employee's long-term substance consumption patterns, providing insight beyond short-term habits. It's an asset for those aiming to uphold stringent drug policies.

This wide detection range is instrumental in assessing long-term trends in drug use, thereby improving the ability of organizations to maintain safe and productive workplaces. Hair testing captures a more comprehensive picture of substance influence, proving beneficial for decision-making processes regarding employment and organizational safety.

Frequently Asked Questions

A hair follicle drug test analyzes a small sample of hair to detect a history of drug use over time. Because drug metabolites are incorporated into hair as it grows, this method can show patterns of use instead of just recent exposure. It is frequently used for legal and court requirements, long-term monitoring, and high-trust workforce screening.
Standard hair drug testing typically reflects drug use over approximately a 90-day period, based on the length of hair collected at the time of testing. Longer hair can sometimes reflect a longer time frame, and extremely short hair can reduce that window.
Hair drug testing commonly screens for marijuana/THC, cocaine, opiates/opioids, amphetamines/methamphetamines, and PCP. In many cases, additional expanded panels may be requested to include other substances.
Yes. If the donor's head hair is too short or unavailable, body hair may be collected as an alternative. The collector will document the source of the sample. This allows testing even for individuals with recently cut or shaved head hair.
Yes. Hair drug testing is commonly used in court, probation, custody, and compliance matters because the collection process follows a documented chain of custody and the analysis is performed by a certified laboratory. Results are provided in a form that can be reviewed by legal and administrative authorities.
Yes. Individuals, parents, attorneys, employers, and probation programs can all request hair drug testing. A doctor's order is not required. Results are confidential and released only to the authorized requesting party.
Hair testing provides a longer look-back period than urine testing, making it useful when you need to demonstrate ongoing abstinence or identify repeated/recent substance use patterns over time rather than just recent exposure. It is frequently selected for legal, compliance, and custody-related documentation.
A small section of hair is cut by a trained collector in a discreet, controlled manner. The sample is sealed, documented, and sent to the laboratory under established chain-of-custody procedures so that the results can be defended if they are ever challenged.
