Accredited Drug Testing offers comprehensive hair follicle drug testing services in Everett, Pennsylvania. If you're in need of a hair drug or alcohol test, Accredited Drug Testing excels in hair testing and operates testing centers nationwide in various cities able to conduct such tests. Typically, 1.5 to 2 inches of hair from the scalp or body hair can be used. Hair tests are suitable for drugs, alcohol/ETG, or customized hair testing services.

Recently, the preference for conducting drug testing has leaned towards hair follicle tests more often. More employers, legal entities, and Substance Abuse professionals are opting for hair drug tests over regular urine tests. Employers with strict no-drug policies, the courts, and probationary programs favor hair follicle testing. The main advantage of these tests is the broader detection timeframe, generally up to 90 days, conducted under observation and making cheating almost impossible. However, for identifying drug use in the preceding 5 days, urine tests remain the most precise choice.

What it is, How it works

Hair testing is now widely recognized as a robust method for detecting drug and alcohol consumption. By capturing biomarkers in the strands of growing hair, it offers a long-term record of alcohol and drug use. Collected near the scalp, hair can reveal usage over a period of up to three months for both alcohol and drugs. Hair collection is straightforward, hard to tamper with, and simple to transport.

A hair sample taken from about 200 strands, measuring 1.5 inches and comparable to a #2 pencil, provides 100mg of hair, which is the best sample size for screening and confirmation. For tests involving EtG, add-ons, or those exceeding 10 panels, 150mg of hair is advised. We suggest using a jeweler's scale to measure the sample. If scalp hair is unavailable, a equivalent weight of body hair may be used. Head hair refers exclusively to scalp hair, while body hair includes all other types (such as facial and axillary hair).

Process Overview

The laboratory processing of drug test results involves four key steps: Accessioning, Screening, Extraction, and Confirmation.

Accessioning means the initial submission of a sample into a laboratory's system. This step includes verifying that the sample was sealed and transported correctly, assigning a random LAN (Laboratory Accessioning Number), and completing additional data entries not covered by an electronic chain of custody system.

Screening is an initial rapid check for drugs. While it is a cost-efficient way to rule out drug use for most samples, a positive screen must be confirmed for court admissibility. Any sample that tests presumptively positive during Screening requires secondary confirmation.

If a sample is presumptively positive in the Screening phase, additional hair is taken from the original specimen and readied for Extraction. During this phase, drugs are extracted from the hair at concentrations much lower than in other methods (e.g., urine or oral fluid), making hair drug screening more complicated to perform.

Confirmation of any positive screening result is carried out through GC/MS, GC/MS/MS, or LC/MS/MS. All samples that test presumptively positive are washed before confirmation as necessary. The entire laboratory process, from Accessioning to Confirmation, is evaluated under the CAP (College of American Pathologists) Hair accreditation as well as ISO / IEC 17025 standards.

Advantages of hair drug testing:

  • Extended detection window: Hair drug tests can track drug use for up to 90 days, unlike urine tests which have a shorter detection period.
  • Difficult to deceive: It is extremely difficult to manipulate a hair drug test, which enhances result accuracy.
  • Provides historical insight: It can illustrate a pattern of drug use over time, not merely recent usage.

Limitations:

  • Recent use undetectable: It takes around 5-7 days for drugs to become visible in hair.
  • Expense: Hair drug tests generally incur higher costs than alternative drug testing methods.
  • Result variations: Hair color and individual hair growth differences can influence drug metabolite concentrations in hair.

Note: Although often termed "hair follicle tests", the analysis actually involves the hair strand and not the hair follicle below the scalp.

Frequently Asked Questions

A hair follicle drug test analyzes a small sample of hair to detect a history of drug use over time. Because drug metabolites are incorporated into hair as it grows, this method can show patterns of use instead of just recent exposure. It is frequently used for legal and court requirements, long-term monitoring, and high-trust workforce screening.
Standard hair drug testing typically reflects drug use over approximately a 90-day period, based on the length of hair collected at the time of testing. Longer hair can sometimes reflect a longer time frame, and extremely short hair can reduce that window.
Hair drug testing commonly screens for marijuana/THC, cocaine, opiates/opioids, amphetamines/methamphetamines, and PCP. In many cases, additional expanded panels may be requested to include other substances.
Yes. If the donor's head hair is too short or unavailable, body hair may be collected as an alternative. The collector will document the source of the sample. This allows testing even for individuals with recently cut or shaved head hair.
Yes. Hair drug testing is commonly used in court, probation, custody, and compliance matters because the collection process follows a documented chain of custody and the analysis is performed by a certified laboratory. Results are provided in a form that can be reviewed by legal and administrative authorities.
Yes. Individuals, parents, attorneys, employers, and probation programs can all request hair drug testing. A doctor's order is not required. Results are confidential and released only to the authorized requesting party.
Hair testing provides a longer look-back period than urine testing, making it useful when you need to demonstrate ongoing abstinence or identify repeated/recent substance use patterns over time rather than just recent exposure. It is frequently selected for legal, compliance, and custody-related documentation.
A small section of hair is cut by a trained collector in a discreet, controlled manner. The sample is sealed, documented, and sent to the laboratory under established chain-of-custody procedures so that the results can be defended if they are ever challenged.
