Accredited Drug Testing offers comprehensive hair follicle testing in East Stroudsburg, PA. For individuals requiring a drug or alcohol test, our centers across the country provide specialized hair testing services. Generally, 1.5 to 2 inches of hair from the head or body is needed. These tests can assess drugs, alcohol/ETG, or other tailored testing options.

Hair follicle testing has gained prominence in drug testing routines. Organizations, courts, and addiction experts often prefer this method over traditional urine tests. Companies with strict drug policies, legal systems, and probation officers favor hair tests for their extensive detection window, which can reach up to 90 days. The process is observed, minimizing fraud, although urine tests are still best for recent drug use.

What it is, How it works

Hair testing is often considered a robust approach for identifying the consumption of drugs and alcohol. It offers an extensive history of usage by capturing biomarkers within the strands of growing hair. When taken near the scalp, hair can reveal substance usage for up to about three months. Collecting hair is straightforward, difficult to tamper with, and convenient to transport.

A specimen consisting of a 1.5-inch sample of roughly 200 hair strands (comparable to the thickness of a #2 pencil) positioned nearest to the scalp will yield around 100mg of hair, which is the preferred amount for both screening and confirmation. For tests such as EtG, add-ons, and/or those exceeding 10 panels, a 150mg sample is advised. We suggest using a jeweler’s scale for weighing the specimen. Should scalp hair be unobtainable, an equivalent volume of body hair can be collected. When discussing head hair, we specifically mean scalp hair. Body hair encompasses all other hair types (e.g., facial, axillary, etc.).

Process Overview

The laboratory processing of a drug test result is comprised of four primary steps: Accessioning, Screening, Extraction, and Confirmation.

Accessioning pertains to the initial integration of a sample into a lab’s system. This process includes verifying sample seal and shipment integrity, issuing a random LAN (Laboratory Accessioning Number), and completing any necessary additional data entry not present with an electronic chain of custody protocol.

Screening involves a preliminary assessment for illegal drug use. While Screening efficiently rules out substance usage for most samples, a positive result requires confirmation for legal admissibility. Samples that test positive during Screening undergo a secondary validation.

In the event of a positive Screening finding, additional hair is extracted from the initial specimen and prepared for Extraction. During this phase, drugs are isolated from hair at concentrations much lower than in other methods (e.g., urine or saliva), which is why hair drug screening is particularly challenging.

Confirmation of any positive preliminary result is conducted using GC/MS, GC/MS/MS, or LC/MS/MS techniques. Presumptively positive samples undergo washing before confirmation as required. The complete laboratory process, ranging from Accessioning to Confirmation, is audited according to CAP (College of American Pathologists) Hair designation and ISO / IEC 17025 standards.

Advantages of hair drug testing:

  • Extended detection timeframe: Hair tests can trace drug usage for up to 90 days, unlike urine tests, which have a shorter timeframe.
  • Resistance to evasion: Tampering with a hair test is exceedingly difficult, ensuring greater accuracy of results.
  • Historical usage data: Hair tests can illustrate drug usage patterns over time rather than only recent consumption.

Limitations:

  • Inability to detect recent consumption: It generally takes 5-7 days for drugs to become traceable in hair.
  • Expense: Hair tests tend to be pricier compared to other drug testing approaches.
  • Result variability: Factors such as individual hair color and growth rate can influence drug metabolite concentrations in hair.

Note: Although commonly known as "hair follicle tests," the analysis focuses on the hair strand and not the follicle beneath the scalp.

Frequently Asked Questions

A hair follicle drug test analyzes a small sample of hair to detect a history of drug use over time. Because drug metabolites are incorporated into hair as it grows, this method can show patterns of use instead of just recent exposure. It is frequently used for legal and court requirements, long-term monitoring, and high-trust workforce screening.
Standard hair drug testing typically reflects drug use over approximately a 90-day period, based on the length of hair collected at the time of testing. Longer hair can sometimes reflect a longer time frame, and extremely short hair can reduce that window.
Hair drug testing commonly screens for marijuana/THC, cocaine, opiates/opioids, amphetamines/methamphetamines, and PCP. In many cases, additional expanded panels may be requested to include other substances.
Yes. If the donor's head hair is too short or unavailable, body hair may be collected as an alternative. The collector will document the source of the sample. This allows testing even for individuals with recently cut or shaved head hair.
Yes. Hair drug testing is commonly used in court, probation, custody, and compliance matters because the collection process follows a documented chain of custody and the analysis is performed by a certified laboratory. Results are provided in a form that can be reviewed by legal and administrative authorities.
Yes. Individuals, parents, attorneys, employers, and probation programs can all request hair drug testing. A doctor's order is not required. Results are confidential and released only to the authorized requesting party.
Hair testing provides a longer look-back period than urine testing, making it useful when you need to demonstrate ongoing abstinence or identify repeated/recent substance use patterns over time rather than just recent exposure. It is frequently selected for legal, compliance, and custody-related documentation.
A small section of hair is cut by a trained collector in a discreet, controlled manner. The sample is sealed, documented, and sent to the laboratory under established chain-of-custody procedures so that the results can be defended if they are ever challenged.
