Located in Corry, Pennsylvania, Accredited Drug Testing offers comprehensive hair follicle drug and alcohol tests. Our expertise in hair testing means you can rely on us across multiple cities nationwide to conduct these analyses. With 1.5 to 2 inches of hair from either the head or body, most people qualify for these assessments, which can detect various substances including alcohol and drugs through tailored testing options.

Hair follicle drug tests have become more prevalent as the drug testing technique of choice in recent times. Employers, legal systems, and addiction specialists often prefer these over traditional urine tests. They are vital for employers enforcing strict no-drug policies, for court-mandated tests, and for individuals serving probation. The main advantage is their longer drug detection time, usually extending up to 90 days, allowing for real-time specimen collection and being nearly cheat-proof, although urine tests are still better for checking recent drug use within the past five days.

What it is, How it works

Hair analysis has emerged as an effective means for unveiling drug and alcohol consumption. Hair preserves a comprehensive record of alcohol and drug presence by capturing biomarkers within the fibers of developing hair strands. When obtained near the scalp, hair can reveal substance use for up to roughly three months. Hair is straightforward to gather, somewhat resistant to tampering, and simple to transport.

A sample measuring 1.5 inches consisting of around 200 hairs (comparable to a #2 pencil) closest to the scalp will yield 100mg, the optimal sample size for both screening and verification. For EtG, extensive tests, and/or panels exceeding 10, 150mg of the sample is advisable. It's suggested to measure the sample with a jeweler’s scale. If scalp hair isn't obtainable, an equivalent quantity of body hair may be taken. Head hair strictly refers to scalp hair. Body hair encompasses all other types (e.g., facial, axillary).

Process Overview

The four primary steps in the lab processing of a drug test result include Accessioning, Screening, Extraction, and Confirmation.

Accessioning pertains to the initial incorporation of a sample into a lab's system. It involves confirming the sample was sealed and sent properly, allocating a random LAN (Laboratory Accessioning Number), and fulfilling any extra data entry not covered by an electronic chain of custody system.

Screening entails a basic quick evaluation for substances of abuse. Although Screening is a budget-friendly approach to rule out drug usage for most samples, a positive screen necessitates verification for court acceptability. Any samples marked as presumptively positive in Screening call for additional confirmation.

If a sample is marked as presumptive positive in the Screening phase, additional hair from the original sample is utilized for Extraction. Here, drugs are extracted from hair in much lower concentrations than in other methods (e.g., urine or oral fluid), which contributes to the complexity of hair drug screening as a methodology.

Confirmation of any positive Screening outcome is performed using GC/MS, GC/MS/MS, or LC/MS/MS. Presumptive positive samples undergo washing before confirmation if necessary. The entire lab process from Accessioning to Confirmation undergoes review under both the CAP (College of American Pathologists) Hair designation and the ISO / IEC 17025 accreditation standards.

Advantages of hair drug testing:

  • Extended detection period: Hair drug tests can uncover drug usage for up to 90 days, contrasting with urine tests which have a shorter detection span.
  • Resistance to manipulation: Hair drug tests are very difficult to subvert, leading to more reliable results.
  • Offers historical insights: It provides a timeline of drug use, not just highlighting recent consumption.

Limitations:

  • Lacks detection of recent use: It requires about 5-7 days for drugs to be traceable in hair.
  • Expense: Hair drug tests often incur higher costs compared to other testing techniques.
  • Result variability: Elements like hair color and personal variations in hair growth can influence drug metabolite concentrations in hair.

Note: Although commonly dubbed "hair follicle tests," the test assesses the hair strand, not the follicle beneath the scalp.

Frequently Asked Questions

A hair follicle drug test analyzes a small sample of hair to detect a history of drug use over time. Because drug metabolites are incorporated into hair as it grows, this method can show patterns of use instead of just recent exposure. It is frequently used for legal and court requirements, long-term monitoring, and high-trust workforce screening.
Standard hair drug testing typically reflects drug use over approximately a 90-day period, based on the length of hair collected at the time of testing. Longer hair can sometimes reflect a longer time frame, and extremely short hair can reduce that window.
Hair drug testing commonly screens for marijuana/THC, cocaine, opiates/opioids, amphetamines/methamphetamines, and PCP. In many cases, additional expanded panels may be requested to include other substances.
Yes. If the donor's head hair is too short or unavailable, body hair may be collected as an alternative. The collector will document the source of the sample. This allows testing even for individuals with recently cut or shaved head hair.
Yes. Hair drug testing is commonly used in court, probation, custody, and compliance matters because the collection process follows a documented chain of custody and the analysis is performed by a certified laboratory. Results are provided in a form that can be reviewed by legal and administrative authorities.
Yes. Individuals, parents, attorneys, employers, and probation programs can all request hair drug testing. A doctor's order is not required. Results are confidential and released only to the authorized requesting party.
Hair testing provides a longer look-back period than urine testing, making it useful when you need to demonstrate ongoing abstinence or identify repeated/recent substance use patterns over time rather than just recent exposure. It is frequently selected for legal, compliance, and custody-related documentation.
A small section of hair is cut by a trained collector in a discreet, controlled manner. The sample is sealed, documented, and sent to the laboratory under established chain-of-custody procedures so that the results can be defended if they are ever challenged.
