Accredited Drug Testing offers thorough hair follicle drug assessments in Clearfield, Pennsylvania. Our expertise lies in both hair and alcohol testing, and our facilities spread across various cities in the country are equipped to conduct these tests. Hair from the crown or other body parts ranging between 1.5 to 2 inches is typically required. These tests can detect drugs, alcohol/ETG, or other specialized options.

The preference for hair follicle testing for detecting drugs has been growing. Employers, legal authorities, and substance counselors often request hair tests over urine ones. Companies enforcing strict drug policies, judicial systems, and probation officers are primary users. Hair tests provide an extended substance detection window of around 90 days, and the collection is closely supervised, ensuring the results are hard to manipulate. Nevertheless, urine tests remain preferred for analyzing drug use within a recent five-day time frame.

What it is, How it works

Hair analysis has emerged as an effective method for detecting drug and alcohol usage. Hair captures a prolonged record of alcohol and other drugs by embedding biomarkers in the fibers of the growing strand. When gathered near the scalp, hair can offer up to roughly a 3-month detection timeframe for alcohol and other substances. Hair is straightforward to gather, relatively hard to tamper with, and simple to transport.

A 1.5-inch segment of approximately 200 strands of hair (comparable to a #2 pencil in size) nearest to the scalp will yield 100mg of hair, the optimal sample amount for both screening and confirmation. For EtG, additional tests, and/or panels exceeding 10, a specimen weighing 150mg is advisable. We suggest using a jeweler’s scale to weigh the specimen. If scalp hair is inaccessible, an equivalent amount of body hair is a feasible alternative. Head hair refers solely to scalp hair, while body hair includes all other hair types (facial, axillary, etc.).

Process Overview

The key stages in the laboratory processing of a drug test result encompass Accessioning, Screening, Extraction, and Confirmation.

Accessioning consists of the initial integration of a sample into the lab's framework. This step entails confirming the sample was appropriately sealed and dispatched, generating a random LAN (Laboratory Accessioning Number), and completing any extra data entry absent in an electronic chain of custody system.

Screening constitutes an initial rapid assessment for abusive drugs. Though Screening serves as an economical method to exclude drug usage in most samples, a positive result necessitates confirmation to be valid in judicial contexts. Samples with presumptive positives warrant follow-up confirmation.

Should a sample show presumptive positivity at the Screening phase, additional hair is extracted from the original sample to undergo Extraction. During this stage, drugs are removed from hair at a considerably lower concentration relative to alternative methods (such as urine or oral fluid), underscoring why hair drug analysis is uniquely challenging.

Confirmation of a positive screening outcome is executed using GC/MS, GC/MS/MS or LC/MS/MS. All presumptively positive samples undergo cleansing prior to confirmation as required. The comprehensive lab procedure from Accessioning to Confirmation is oversaw under both the CAP (College of American Pathologists) Hair designation and compliance with ISO / IEC 17025 standards.

Advantages of hair drug testing:

  • Extended detection period: Hair drug tests can reveal drug usage for as long as 90 days, unlike urine tests with a shorter detection span.
  • Hard to manipulate: Cheating a hair drug test is significantly challenging, enhancing result precision.
  • Delivers historical insight: It can offer a sequence of drug usage across a timeframe, beyond merely recent consumption.

Limitations:

  • Incapable of identifying recent consumption: It typically takes 5-7 days for drugs to be traceable in hair.
  • Expense: Hair drug tests tend to be pricier than other drug testing techniques.
  • Result variability: Elements like hair color and individual growth variations can influence drug metabolite levels in hair.

Note: Despite often being termed "hair follicle tests", the test actually examines the hair strand, not the follicle beneath the scalp.

Frequently Asked Questions

A hair follicle drug test analyzes a small sample of hair to detect a history of drug use over time. Because drug metabolites are incorporated into hair as it grows, this method can show patterns of use instead of just recent exposure. It is frequently used for legal and court requirements, long-term monitoring, and high-trust workforce screening.
Standard hair drug testing typically reflects drug use over approximately a 90-day period, based on the length of hair collected at the time of testing. Longer hair can sometimes reflect a longer time frame, and extremely short hair can reduce that window.
Hair drug testing commonly screens for marijuana/THC, cocaine, opiates/opioids, amphetamines/methamphetamines, and PCP. In many cases, additional expanded panels may be requested to include other substances.
Yes. If the donor's head hair is too short or unavailable, body hair may be collected as an alternative. The collector will document the source of the sample. This allows testing even for individuals with recently cut or shaved head hair.
Yes. Hair drug testing is commonly used in court, probation, custody, and compliance matters because the collection process follows a documented chain of custody and the analysis is performed by a certified laboratory. Results are provided in a form that can be reviewed by legal and administrative authorities.
Yes. Individuals, parents, attorneys, employers, and probation programs can all request hair drug testing. A doctor's order is not required. Results are confidential and released only to the authorized requesting party.
Hair testing provides a longer look-back period than urine testing, making it useful when you need to demonstrate ongoing abstinence or identify repeated/recent substance use patterns over time rather than just recent exposure. It is frequently selected for legal, compliance, and custody-related documentation.
A small section of hair is cut by a trained collector in a discreet, controlled manner. The sample is sealed, documented, and sent to the laboratory under established chain-of-custody procedures so that the results can be defended if they are ever challenged.
