At Accredited Drug Testing, we offer thorough hair follicle drug tests in Carnegie, Pennsylvania. Whether you require a hair drug or alcohol screening, we are experts in this field and operate testing facilities across the nation that can conduct such tests. Generally, you need 1.5 to 2 inches of hair from your head or body. Hair tests can analyze drugs, alcohol/ETG, or other tailored testing solutions.

Recently, the trend towards drug testing has shifted in favor of hair follicle drug tests. These are increasingly being mandated by employers, legal entities, and addiction specialists over traditional urine tests. Employers with zero-tolerance policies, the judicial system, and those on probation favor this method. A key advantage is the extended detection window for drug use—usually up to 90 days—which includes an observed collection process, making it hard to tamper with. Nonetheless, for drug use within the past five days, urine tests remain the most reliable.

What it is, How it works

Hair testing is now recognized as an effective resource in identifying drug and alcohol consumption. Hair offers a comprehensive history of substance intake by encapsulating biomarkers within the hair fiber. When collected near the scalp, it enables tracing alcohol and drug use for nearly a 3-month span. The collection process is uncomplicated, with a measure of difficulty in tampering, and is convenient for transportation.

A sample size of 1.5 inches consisting of roughly 200 hair strands (comparable to a #2 pencil) proximal to the scalp yields 100mg of hair, ideal for both screening and verification. For EtG, supplementary tests, and/or testing exceeding 10 panels, 150mg of the sample is advisable. We suggest measuring the sample on a jeweler's scale. On the occasion that scalp hair is not available, an equivalent quantity of body hair is acceptable. When discussing head hair, it specifically pertains to scalp hair. Body hair encompasses all other hair categories (such as facial, axillary, etc.).

Process Overview

Four primary stages constitute the lab processing of a drug test result: Accessioning, Screening, Extraction, and Confirmation.

Accessioning entails the initial sample processing into the laboratory's database. It involves confirming proper sealing and shipping of the sample, assigning a random LAN (Laboratory Accessioning Number), and completing any data entry absent from an electronic custody chain.

Screening represents an initial rapid assessment for drug presence. While being a cost-efficient approach to tentatively dismiss drug use in most samples, a positive screen necessitates confirmation to be legally acceptable. Presumptively positive samples during Screening must undergo secondary confirmation.

In cases of presumptive positivity in Screening, additional hair is extracted from the initial sample for preparation in Extraction. During this phase, drugs are isolated from hair at a significantly lower concentration than in other approaches (e.g., urine or oral fluid), rendering hair drug screening the most challenging method.

Confirmation for positive screening outcomes is performed using GC/MS, GC/MS/MS, or LC/MS/MS technologies. All samples presumed positive are washed before confirmation if necessary. The entire laboratory operations from Accessioning to Confirmation undergo review under the CAP (College of American Pathologists) Hair criteria and the ISO / IEC 17025 standard accreditation.

Advantages of hair drug testing:

  • Extended detection duration: Hair drug tests can identify drug usage up to 90 days prior, unlike urine tests which have a shorter detection timeframe.
  • Hard to manipulate: Cheating a hair drug test is extremely challenging, thereby increasing result accuracy.
  • Offers historical insight: Provides a usage pattern over time, rather than recent consumption.

Limitations:

  • Inability to detect immediate usage: Drugs become noticeable in hair roughly 5-7 days after use.
  • Expense: Hair drug tests are typically costlier than other testing techniques.
  • Result variability: Factors including hair color and individual growth variations can influence drug metabolite concentration in hair.

Note: Though usually named "hair follicle tests", the analysis targets the hair strand, not the follicle beneath the scalp

Frequently Asked Questions

A hair follicle drug test analyzes a small sample of hair to detect a history of drug use over time. Because drug metabolites are incorporated into hair as it grows, this method can show patterns of use instead of just recent exposure. It is frequently used for legal and court requirements, long-term monitoring, and high-trust workforce screening.
Standard hair drug testing typically reflects drug use over approximately a 90-day period, based on the length of hair collected at the time of testing. Longer hair can sometimes reflect a longer time frame, and extremely short hair can reduce that window.
Hair drug testing commonly screens for marijuana/THC, cocaine, opiates/opioids, amphetamines/methamphetamines, and PCP. In many cases, additional expanded panels may be requested to include other substances.
Yes. If the donor's head hair is too short or unavailable, body hair may be collected as an alternative. The collector will document the source of the sample. This allows testing even for individuals with recently cut or shaved head hair.
Yes. Hair drug testing is commonly used in court, probation, custody, and compliance matters because the collection process follows a documented chain of custody and the analysis is performed by a certified laboratory. Results are provided in a form that can be reviewed by legal and administrative authorities.
Yes. Individuals, parents, attorneys, employers, and probation programs can all request hair drug testing. A doctor's order is not required. Results are confidential and released only to the authorized requesting party.
Hair testing provides a longer look-back period than urine testing, making it useful when you need to demonstrate ongoing abstinence or identify repeated/recent substance use patterns over time rather than just recent exposure. It is frequently selected for legal, compliance, and custody-related documentation.
A small section of hair is cut by a trained collector in a discreet, controlled manner. The sample is sealed, documented, and sent to the laboratory under established chain-of-custody procedures so that the results can be defended if they are ever challenged.
