Accredited Drug Testing provides thorough hair follicle drug testing in Cabot, Pennsylvania. Whether you require hair drug or alcohol testing, Accredited Drug Testing specializes in hair testing, with testing centers in cities nationwide capable of conducting these tests. Typically, 1.5 to 2 inches of hair from your crown or body is used. Hair tests can identify drugs, alcohol/ETG, or other tailored testing options.

In recent years, hair follicle drug testing has become more common in drug testing methods. Many employers, courts, and substance abuse specialists favor hair drug tests over standard urine tests. Hair follicle tests are used by both zero-tolerance employers and courts, including individuals on probation. The key advantage is a longer detection window, up to 90 days, conducted in a supervised environment, making it nearly cheat-proof. However, urine tests remain most accurate for detecting drug use within the last five days.

What it is, How it works

The use of hair testing is increasingly recognized as an effective means for detecting drug and alcohol consumption. Hair acts as a repository for long-term drug and alcohol history by capturing biomarkers within the hair's structure as it grows. When hair is collected close to the scalp, it can offer about a 3-month timeframe for detecting alcohol and other substances. The collection process for hair is straightforward, and it is relatively tamper-resistant and convenient to transport.

A sample measuring 1.5 inches from approximately 200 strands (similar in size to a #2 pencil) near the scalp yields 100mg of hair, which is ideal for screening and confirmatory testing. For EtG additions and/or tests beyond 10 panels, 150mg of sample is advised. We suggest using a jeweler’s scale to measure the sample. Should scalp hair not be available, an equivalent quantity of body hair can be used. When mentioning head hair, we mean scalp hair exclusively. Body hair encompasses all other hair types (e.g., facial, axillary).

Process Overview

The lab processing for drug testing consists of four key steps: Accessioning, Screening, Extraction, and Confirmation.

Accessioning is the initial processing step where a sample is entered into the laboratory's system. This phase ensures the sample is properly sealed and shipped, assigns it a unique LAN (Laboratory Accessioning Number), and completes any data entry omitted by an electronic chain of custody system.

Screening conducts a preliminary inspection for substances. Although cost-effective for identifying drug absence in most samples, a positive screening result must undergo confirmation to be valid in legal contexts. Any samples that show presumptive positive results in Screening necessitate further confirmation.

Should a sample test presumptively positive at the Screening stage, additional hair is extracted from the original specimen for the Extraction phase. During Extraction, substances are drawn from hair at significantly lower concentrations than other methods (e.g., urine or oral fluids), making hair drug testing the most challenging to execute.

GC/MS, GC/MS/MS, or LC/MS/MS techniques are deployed for Confirming any positive Screening outcomes. All samples deemed positive must undergo a cleansing process before Confirmation if necessary. The entire lab procedure, from Accessioning through Confirmation, is scrutinized under the CAP (College of American Pathologists) Hair classification and certified to ISO/IEC 17025 standards.

Advantages of hair drug testing:

  • Extended detection period: Hair drug tests can identify drug use for as long as 90 days, unlike urine tests which offer a brief detection interval.
  • Almost impossible to falsify: Hair drug tests have a high level of integrity, ensuring accurate results.
  • Delivers usage history: This method allows for an analysis of drug use trends over time, rather than recent consumption alone.

Limitations:

  • Inability to identify recent usage: Drugs require approximately 5-7 days to become detectable in hair.
  • Expense: Hair drug testing is typically pricier compared to other testing techniques.
  • Result variability: Variables such as hair color and individual hair growth differences can influence drug metabolite concentrations in hair.

Note: Although frequently called "hair follicle tests," the test examines the hair strand itself, not the scalp's underlying follicle.

Frequently Asked Questions

A hair follicle drug test analyzes a small sample of hair to detect a history of drug use over time. Because drug metabolites are incorporated into hair as it grows, this method can show patterns of use instead of just recent exposure. It is frequently used for legal and court requirements, long-term monitoring, and high-trust workforce screening.
Standard hair drug testing typically reflects drug use over approximately a 90-day period, based on the length of hair collected at the time of testing. Longer hair can sometimes reflect a longer time frame, and extremely short hair can reduce that window.
Hair drug testing commonly screens for marijuana/THC, cocaine, opiates/opioids, amphetamines/methamphetamines, and PCP. In many cases, additional expanded panels may be requested to include other substances.
Yes. If the donor's head hair is too short or unavailable, body hair may be collected as an alternative. The collector will document the source of the sample. This allows testing even for individuals with recently cut or shaved head hair.
Yes. Hair drug testing is commonly used in court, probation, custody, and compliance matters because the collection process follows a documented chain of custody and the analysis is performed by a certified laboratory. Results are provided in a form that can be reviewed by legal and administrative authorities.
Yes. Individuals, parents, attorneys, employers, and probation programs can all request hair drug testing. A doctor's order is not required. Results are confidential and released only to the authorized requesting party.
Hair testing provides a longer look-back period than urine testing, making it useful when you need to demonstrate ongoing abstinence or identify repeated/recent substance use patterns over time rather than just recent exposure. It is frequently selected for legal, compliance, and custody-related documentation.
A small section of hair is cut by a trained collector in a discreet, controlled manner. The sample is sealed, documented, and sent to the laboratory under established chain-of-custody procedures so that the results can be defended if they are ever challenged.
