Accredited Drug Testing offers comprehensive hair follicle drug evaluations in Alburtis, Pennsylvania. Specializing in hair analyses for drugs and alcohol, we provide numerous testing locations across the nation. Generally, a hair length of 1.5 to 2 inches on the scalp or body is necessary. These tests can also be customized to detect alcohol/ETG and other substances.

Hair follicle drug testing has gained prominence recently as an alternative to urine analysis. Employers, legal systems, and substance abuse professionals increasingly opt for the hair test due to its extensive detection timeframe—up to 90 days—and enhanced security against tampering. While hair tests are comprehensive, urine tests remain optimal for detecting drug use within a 5-day window.

What it is, How it works

Hair analysis has become recognized as a robust method for identifying drug and alcohol consumption. Hair captures a long-term trace of alcohol and drugs by embedding markers in the structure of the growing hair. When gathered near the scalp, hair can deliver up to an approximate three-month detection period for alcohol and drugs. Collecting hair is straightforward, relatively tamper-resistant, and easily transportable.

A 1.5-inch section of around 200 hairs (comparable to a #2 pencil thickness) closest to the scalp will equal 100mg, which is the preferred amount for evaluation and verification. For EtG, additional tests, and/or screenings exceeding 10 panels, it’s suggested to use 150mg of sample. It's advisable to weigh the sample on a jewelry scale. If scalp hair is absent, a comparable quantity of body hair can be used. When mentioning head hair, we specifically mean scalp hair. Body hair encompasses all other types (facial, underarm, etc.).

Process Overview

The core phases in processing a drug test result in the lab include Accessioning, Screening, Extraction, and Confirmation.

During Accessioning, the sample is initially checked into the laboratory’s systems. This step involves ensuring the sample was sealed and sent accurately, assigning a random LAN (Laboratory Accessioning Number), and completing any missing data entry that an electronic custody system didn't cover.

Screening is a preliminary fast assessment for substance abuse. Though Screening economically eliminates drug usage in most samples, any positive Screen requires confirmation for legal validity. Samples that are presumptively positive in Screening necessitate a follow-up confirmation.

If Screening results are presumptive positive, more hair is drawn from the initial sample for Extraction. Here, drugs are extracted from hair at much lower levels compared to other methods (e.g., urine or oral fluid), making hair drug analysis the most intricate methodology to execute.

Positive Screening results are confirmed using GC/MS, GC/MS/MS, or LC/MS/MS. All samples preliminarily positive undergo washing before confirmation if necessary. The entire lab procedure from Accessioning to Confirmation is inspected under both the CAP (College of American Pathologists) Hair designation and ISO / IEC 17025 standards accreditation.

Advantages of hair drug testing:

  • Extended detection period: Hair drug exams can identify drug use up to 90 days, contrasting with urine tests that have shorter detection periods.
  • Challenging to manipulate: Cheating a hair drug exam is quite tough, ensuring more reliable outcomes.
  • Supplies historical insight: It shows usage trends rather than only recent consumption.

Limitations:

  • Not detecting recent use: Drugs become identifiable in hair after roughly 5-7 days.
  • Price: Hair drug exams are often costlier than other drug testing approaches.
  • Result variability: Factors like hair color and individual hair growth variations can influence drug metabolite levels in the hair.

Note: Though commonly known as "hair follicle tests", this test examines the hair itself and not the follicle beneath the scalp.

Why Hair Follicle Testing Beats Urine Testing

Why Choose Hair Testing Over Urine Tests?

Hair follicle testing in Alburtis, PA, provides more reliable and accurate outcomes than traditional urine tests. Their ability to detect substances over extended periods and safeguard against manipulation renders hair tests the preferred choice. An Extensive Detection Window

Alburtis, PA, has embraced hair follicle testing due to its expansive detection range. Spanning up to 90 days, these tests paint a vivid picture of a subject’s drug history. Unlike other methods, this extended window allows employers and legal officials to make decisions based on a full understanding of an individual's substance use patterns over a significant period.

Frequently Asked Questions

A hair follicle drug test analyzes a small sample of hair to detect a history of drug use over time. Because drug metabolites are incorporated into hair as it grows, this method can show patterns of use instead of just recent exposure. It is frequently used for legal and court requirements, long-term monitoring, and high-trust workforce screening.
Standard hair drug testing typically reflects drug use over approximately a 90-day period, based on the length of hair collected at the time of testing. Longer hair can sometimes reflect a longer time frame, and extremely short hair can reduce that window.
Hair drug testing commonly screens for marijuana/THC, cocaine, opiates/opioids, amphetamines/methamphetamines, and PCP. In many cases, additional expanded panels may be requested to include other substances.
Yes. If the donor's head hair is too short or unavailable, body hair may be collected as an alternative. The collector will document the source of the sample. This allows testing even for individuals with recently cut or shaved head hair.
Yes. Hair drug testing is commonly used in court, probation, custody, and compliance matters because the collection process follows a documented chain of custody and the analysis is performed by a certified laboratory. Results are provided in a form that can be reviewed by legal and administrative authorities.
Yes. Individuals, parents, attorneys, employers, and probation programs can all request hair drug testing. A doctor's order is not required. Results are confidential and released only to the authorized requesting party.
Hair testing provides a longer look-back period than urine testing, making it useful when you need to demonstrate ongoing abstinence or identify repeated/recent substance use patterns over time rather than just recent exposure. It is frequently selected for legal, compliance, and custody-related documentation.
A small section of hair is cut by a trained collector in a discreet, controlled manner. The sample is sealed, documented, and sent to the laboratory under established chain-of-custody procedures so that the results can be defended if they are ever challenged.
