In Abington, Pennsylvania, Accredited Drug Testing offers comprehensive hair follicle testing services. If you require a drug or alcohol test, our expertise in hair testing is unmatched, with facilities located across all cities nationwide equipped to conduct such tests. Generally, 1.5 to 2 inches of hair from the crown of the head or body can be used. Hair tests provide analysis for drugs, alcohol/ETG, and other customized options.

Recently, hair follicle drug tests have become more common in the realm of drug screening. Employers, legal systems, and substance misuse professionals often favor hair drug tests over traditional urine tests. Hair test benefits include a longer detection window—up to 90 days, an observed collection process, and reduced cheating potential. However, for detecting recent use within the past 5 days, urine tests remain the most precise.

What it is, How it works

Hair testing has become recognized as an effective instrument for identifying drug and alcohol consumption. Hair serves as a long-term archive of alcohol and drug usage by retaining biomarkers within the fibers of the maturing hair strand. When collected near the scalp, hair can provide a detection window for alcohol and other drugs of up to around three months. Hair collection is straightforward, relatively tamper-resistant, and easy to transport.

A 1.5-inch segment of roughly 200 hair strands (approximately the size of a #2 pencil) closest to the scalp will yield 100mg of hair, the optimal sample for analysis and confirmation. For EtG, additional testing, and/or panels exceeding 10, 150mg of specimen is advised. It's recommended to measure the specimen using a jeweler’s scale. If head hair is not available, an equivalent amount of body hair can be collected. Head hair refers strictly to scalp hair. Body hair encompasses all other types (facial, axillary, etc.).

Process Overview

The laboratory processing of a drug test result comprises four main stages: Accessioning, Screening, Extraction, and Confirmation.

Accessioning refers to the initial processing of a sample into a lab system. This includes ensuring the sample was correctly sealed and shipped, assigning a random LAN (Laboratory Accessioning Number), and completing any additional data entry absent in an electronic chain of custody system.

Screening is an initial quick evaluation for substances of abuse. While it's a cost-efficient method to mostly rule out drug use, a positive Screen must be confirmed to be eligible in court. Any samples that yield a presumptive positive in Screening require a secondary confirmation.

When Screening indicates a presumptive positive, further hair is retrieved from the initial specimen for Extraction. In this phase, drugs are removed from hair at a much lower concentration than with other techniques (e.g., urine or oral fluid), explaining why hair drug screening is the most challenging technique to apply.

Confirmation of any positive Screening result is performed using GC/MS, GC/MS/MS, or LC/MS/MS. All presumptive positive samples are rinsed before confirmation as necessary. The complete laboratory process from Accessioning to Confirmation is assessed under both the CAP (College of American Pathologists) Hair designation and accreditation to ISO / IEC 17025 standards.

Advantages of hair drug testing:

  • Extended detection window: Hair drug tests can identify drug use for up to 90 days, unlike urine tests with a shorter detection period.
  • Challenging to falsify: Cheating a hair drug test is very difficult, enhancing result accuracy.
  • Historical usage data: Provides a timeline of drug use over a specified period, not just recent usage.

Limitations:

  • Not effective for recent use: Drugs take approximately 5-7 days to become detectable in hair.
  • Expense: Hair drug tests generally have a higher cost compared to other drug testing methods.
  • Result variability: Elements such as hair color and individual hair growth variations can impact drug metabolite concentration in the hair.

Note: Commonly referred to as "hair follicle tests", the procedure analyzes the hair strand itself and not the follicle beneath the scalp.

Why Hair Follicle Testing Beats Urine Testing

If you're in Abington, PA, consider the benefits of hair follicle over urine tests. Hair tests extend the detection window significantly, while urine tests might miss prolonged substance use. Hair testing's accuracy and dependability ensure superior outcomes for those requiring comprehensive insights. These benefits make hair testing a vital tool over standard urine analysis.

Frequently Asked Questions

A hair follicle drug test analyzes a small sample of hair to detect a history of drug use over time. Because drug metabolites are incorporated into hair as it grows, this method can show patterns of use instead of just recent exposure. It is frequently used for legal and court requirements, long-term monitoring, and high-trust workforce screening.
Standard hair drug testing typically reflects drug use over approximately a 90-day period, based on the length of hair collected at the time of testing. Longer hair can sometimes reflect a longer time frame, and extremely short hair can reduce that window.
Hair drug testing commonly screens for marijuana/THC, cocaine, opiates/opioids, amphetamines/methamphetamines, and PCP. In many cases, additional expanded panels may be requested to include other substances.
Yes. If the donor's head hair is too short or unavailable, body hair may be collected as an alternative. The collector will document the source of the sample. This allows testing even for individuals with recently cut or shaved head hair.
Yes. Hair drug testing is commonly used in court, probation, custody, and compliance matters because the collection process follows a documented chain of custody and the analysis is performed by a certified laboratory. Results are provided in a form that can be reviewed by legal and administrative authorities.
Yes. Individuals, parents, attorneys, employers, and probation programs can all request hair drug testing. A doctor's order is not required. Results are confidential and released only to the authorized requesting party.
Hair testing provides a longer look-back period than urine testing, making it useful when you need to demonstrate ongoing abstinence or identify repeated/recent substance use patterns over time rather than just recent exposure. It is frequently selected for legal, compliance, and custody-related documentation.
A small section of hair is cut by a trained collector in a discreet, controlled manner. The sample is sealed, documented, and sent to the laboratory under established chain-of-custody procedures so that the results can be defended if they are ever challenged.
