Delivering comprehensive hair follicle drug tests in Waldport, OR, Accredited Drug Testing is your go-to. If a hair drug or alcohol test is what you seek, our expertise in hair testing is unmatched with centers across the nation ready to assist. Require 1.5 to 2 inches of hair, either from the head or body. Drugs, alcohol, or other specialized testing can be done through hair analysis.

Recently, methods for conducting drug tests have increasingly incorporated hair follicle testing. Employers, courts, and substance abuse specialists prefer this over urine tests. Organizations with zero-tolerance drug norms, judicial bodies, and probationary services greatly rely on hair follicle tests. A main advantage is detecting substance use for up to 90 days, almost impossible to falsify, although it's less apt for recent 5-day usage compared to urine tests.

What it is, How it works

Hair analysis has emerged as a potent method for identifying usage of drugs and alcohol. Hair captures a long-term record of alcohol and drug consumption by embedding biomarkers in the hair's fibers as it grows. If taken near the scalp, hair samples could yield up to roughly a three-month detection period for both alcohol and drugs. The collection of hair is straightforward, relatively hard to tamper with, and convenient to send.

A sample measuring 1.5 inches from around 200 hair strands (comparable to the width of a #2 pencil) closest to the scalp will supply 100mg, which is the optimal amount for both screening and confirmation tests. For EtG, extra tests, and/or those exceeding 10 panels, 150mg is suggested. We advise using a jeweler's scale to weigh the specimen. In the absence of scalp hair, equivalent body hair may be used. When mentioning head hair, we mean scalp hair specifically. Body hair pertains to all other forms (e.g., facial, axillary).

Process Overview

The laboratory processing of a drug test result includes four key steps: Accessioning, Screening, Extraction, and Confirmation.

Accessioning entails the preliminary processing of a sample into the lab's system. This step involves checking that the sample was properly sealed and dispatched, assigning a random LAN (Laboratory Accessioning Number), and completing any missing information not encompassed by an electronic chain of custody system.

Screening is a preliminary quick test for substance abuse. Although Screening is a budget-friendly approach to eliminate drug usage in the majority of samples, a positive screening outcome requires confirmation for legal admissibility. Any sample testing presumptively positive in Screening demands a secondary confirmation.

If a sample tests presumptively positive in the Screening phase, more hair is taken from the initial sample for Extraction. During Extraction, drugs are isolated from hair at much lower concentrations than other methods (such as urine or oral fluid), rendering hair drug screening the most complex methodology to conduct.

Confirmation of any positive screening results is executed using GC/MS, GC/MS/MS, or LC/MS/MS. Presumptive positive samples undergo washing before confirmation as necessary. From Accessioning to Confirmation, each step of the laboratory process is examined under the CAP (College of American Pathologists) Hair designation and compliance with ISO / IEC 17025 standards.

Advantages of hair drug testing:

  • Extended detection period: Hair drug testing can uncover drug use for up to 90 days, unlike urine tests, which have a shorter window.
  • Resistance to cheating: The difficulty in tampering with hair drug tests contributes to higher accuracy in results.
  • Historical data provision: It offers a timeline of drug use rather than solely indicating recent use.

Limitations:

  • Inability to detect recent usage: Drugs only become detectable in hair approximately 5-7 days after use.
  • Expense: Hair drug tests tend to be pricier than other testing methods.
  • Result variations: Factors like hair color and personal differences in hair growth can influence the concentration of drug metabolites present in the hair.

Note: While commonly termed "hair follicle tests", the analysis focuses on the hair strand, not the follicle beneath the scalp.

Frequently Asked Questions

A hair follicle drug test analyzes a small sample of hair to detect a history of drug use over time. Because drug metabolites are incorporated into hair as it grows, this method can show patterns of use instead of just recent exposure. It is frequently used for legal and court requirements, long-term monitoring, and high-trust workforce screening.
Standard hair drug testing typically reflects drug use over approximately a 90-day period, based on the length of hair collected at the time of testing. Longer hair can sometimes reflect a longer time frame, and extremely short hair can reduce that window.
Hair drug testing commonly screens for marijuana/THC, cocaine, opiates/opioids, amphetamines/methamphetamines, and PCP. In many cases, additional expanded panels may be requested to include other substances.
Yes. If the donor's head hair is too short or unavailable, body hair may be collected as an alternative. The collector will document the source of the sample. This allows testing even for individuals with recently cut or shaved head hair.
Yes. Hair drug testing is commonly used in court, probation, custody, and compliance matters because the collection process follows a documented chain of custody and the analysis is performed by a certified laboratory. Results are provided in a form that can be reviewed by legal and administrative authorities.
Yes. Individuals, parents, attorneys, employers, and probation programs can all request hair drug testing. A doctor's order is not required. Results are confidential and released only to the authorized requesting party.
Hair testing provides a longer look-back period than urine testing, making it useful when you need to demonstrate ongoing abstinence or identify repeated/recent substance use patterns over time rather than just recent exposure. It is frequently selected for legal, compliance, and custody-related documentation.
A small section of hair is cut by a trained collector in a discreet, controlled manner. The sample is sealed, documented, and sent to the laboratory under established chain-of-custody procedures so that the results can be defended if they are ever challenged.
