A sample measuring 1.5 inches composed of around 200 hair strands (akin to the thickness of a #2 pencil) nearest to the scalp yields 100mg of hair, ideal for screenings and confirmations. For EtG, additional panels, and/or tests exceeding 10 panels, 150mg of the sample is advisable. We suggest using a jeweler’s scale for weighing. Should scalp hair be unobtainable, an equivalent amount of body hair may be substituted. References to head hair pertain exclusively to scalp hair, while body hair encompasses all other types (facial, axillary, etc.).
Process Overview
The laboratory drug test processing consists of four key stages: Accessioning, Screening, Extraction, and Confirmation.

This phase involves extracting drugs from hair at much lower concentrations than in other processes (for example, urine or oral fluid), which renders hair drug screenings the most challenging methodology to execute.
The Confirmation of positive screens is executed through GC/MS, GC/MS/MS, or LC/MS/MS techniques. All samples with presumptive positives undergo washing prior to necessary confirmation. The entire laboratory sequence from Accessioning to Confirmation is examined under the CAP (College of American Pathologists) Hair classification and ISO / IEC 17025 accreditation standards.
