Accredited Drug Testing offers comprehensive hair follicle testing services in Central Point, Oregon. Whether you require hair drug or alcohol analysis, our expertise lies in hair testing, accessible through our nationwide network of centers including locations in all major cities. Typically, a hair length of 1.5 to 2 inches on the scalp, or body hair, is necessary for testing. Our hair analysis can detect drugs, alcohol, or tailored options for clients.

Recently, hair follicle drug testing has gained popularity as a preferred method of substance screening. Many workplaces, judicial systems, and substance abuse counselors favor hair over traditional urine tests. Employers enforcing zero-tolerance drug policies, courts, and those on probation find this method particularly useful. The main advantage is its extended 90-day detection period. Despite this, urine tests remain more accurate for recent drug usage within a five-day timeframe.

What it is, How it works

Hair testing is now regarded as a potent means of identifying drug and alcohol usage. Hair offers a long-term record of alcohol and other drugs by embedding biomarkers within the fibers of the growing hair strand. When obtained near the scalp, hair can reveal usage for up to a roughly 3-month span for alcohol and other drugs. Hair is easy to collect, somewhat challenging to adulterate, and convenient to ship.

A sample of 1.5 inches consisting of about 200 hair strands (roughly the size of a #2 pencil) nearest to the scalp will yield 100mg of hair, the optimal amount for screening and verification. For EtG, additional, and/or tests beyond 10 panels, a recommendation of 150mg of the sample is given. It is advisable to weigh the sample using a jeweler’s scale. If scalp hair is not present, a comparable amount of body hair can be collected. When mentioning head hair, it specifically pertains to scalp hair only. Body hair includes all other types of hair (facial, axillary, etc.).

Process Overview

The laboratory processing of a drug test result encompasses four primary steps: Accessioning, Screening, Extraction, and Confirmation.

Accessioning consists of the initial input of a sample into the laboratory’s system. This involves confirming that the sample was properly sealed and shipped, assigning a random LAN (Laboratory Accessioning Number), and completing any additional data entry not covered by an electronic chain of custody framework.

Screening entails an initial rapid check for drugs of abuse. Although Screening provides a cost-efficient method to dismiss drug usage for most samples, a positive screen requires validation to be permissible in court. Any samples tentatively positive in Screening necessitate a secondary confirmation.

If a sample indicates a presumptive positive at the Screening phase, additional hair is extracted from the original specimen and readied for Extraction. During this phase, drugs are extracted from hair at a much lower concentration than found in other methodologies (e.g., urine or oral fluid), which makes hair drug screening the most complex methodology to execute.

A confirmation of any positive screening result is executed using GC/MS, GC/MS/MS, or LC/MS/MS. All presumptive positive specimens undergo washing prior to confirmation, as necessary. The entire laboratory process from Accessioning to Confirmation undergoes review under both the CAP (College of American Pathologists) Hair designation and the accreditation to ISO / IEC 17025 standards.

Advantages of hair drug testing:

  • Prolonged detection window: Hair drug tests can identify drug use for up to 90 days, unlike urine tests which have a shorter detection timeline.
  • Challenge to manipulate: It is extremely difficult to manipulate a hair drug test, making the findings more reliable.
  • Offers historical insights: It can illustrate a trend of drug usage over a span of time, rather than just recent consumption.

Limitations:

  • Inability to detect recent consumption: It takes roughly 5-7 days for drugs to become detectable in hair.
  • Expense: Hair drug tests are typically more costly than other drug testing approaches.
  • Result variances: Factors such as hair color and individual differences in hair growth can influence the concentration of drug metabolites in the hair.

Note: Although often named "hair follicle tests", this test evaluates the hair strand and not the hair follicle beneath the scalp

Frequently Asked Questions

A hair follicle drug test analyzes a small sample of hair to detect a history of drug use over time. Because drug metabolites are incorporated into hair as it grows, this method can show patterns of use instead of just recent exposure. It is frequently used for legal and court requirements, long-term monitoring, and high-trust workforce screening.
Standard hair drug testing typically reflects drug use over approximately a 90-day period, based on the length of hair collected at the time of testing. Longer hair can sometimes reflect a longer time frame, and extremely short hair can reduce that window.
Hair drug testing commonly screens for marijuana/THC, cocaine, opiates/opioids, amphetamines/methamphetamines, and PCP. In many cases, additional expanded panels may be requested to include other substances.
Yes. If the donor's head hair is too short or unavailable, body hair may be collected as an alternative. The collector will document the source of the sample. This allows testing even for individuals with recently cut or shaved head hair.
Yes. Hair drug testing is commonly used in court, probation, custody, and compliance matters because the collection process follows a documented chain of custody and the analysis is performed by a certified laboratory. Results are provided in a form that can be reviewed by legal and administrative authorities.
Yes. Individuals, parents, attorneys, employers, and probation programs can all request hair drug testing. A doctor's order is not required. Results are confidential and released only to the authorized requesting party.
Hair testing provides a longer look-back period than urine testing, making it useful when you need to demonstrate ongoing abstinence or identify repeated/recent substance use patterns over time rather than just recent exposure. It is frequently selected for legal, compliance, and custody-related documentation.
A small section of hair is cut by a trained collector in a discreet, controlled manner. The sample is sealed, documented, and sent to the laboratory under established chain-of-custody procedures so that the results can be defended if they are ever challenged.
