Accredited Drug Testing offers comprehensive hair follicle drug testing in Burns, Oregon. If you're in need of a hair drug or alcohol test, our specialty lies in hair testing, with centers available Nationwide capable of performing these tests. Typically, a hair length of 1.5 to 2 inches is required from the crown or can be sourced from the body. Hair tests are versatile for drugs, alcohol/ETG, or other bespoke hair testing needs.

In recent times, hair follicle drug tests have become a more common method for drug testing. Employers, courts, and Substance Abuse professionals are opting for hair tests instead of traditional urine tests. Hair follicle tests cater to employers with strict anti-drug policies, courts, and those on probation. Key advantages include a detection window of up to 90 days, the need for observed sample collection, and high resistance to tampering. Nevertheless, for recent drug use within 5 days, urine tests remain highly precise.

What it is, How it works

Hair testing has emerged as a robust instrument for identifying drug and alcohol consumption. Hair captures a long-term record of alcohol and other substances by embedding biomarkers within the fibers of the growing hair strand. When gathered near the scalp, hair can reveal up to around a 3-month observation window for alcohol and other drugs. Hair is easy to collect, relatively tough to tamper with, and simple to transport.

A 1.5-inch portion of roughly 200 hair strands (comparable to the size of a #2 pencil) nearest to the scalp will yield 100mg of hair, the optimal sample for screening and confirmation. For EtG, add-ons, and/or tests exceeding 10 panels, 150mg of the sample is advised. It’s suggested to weigh the sample using a jeweler’s scale. If scalp hair is not present, a similar quantity of body hair may be obtained. When mentioning head hair, it specifically means scalp hair. Body hair pertains to all other hair types (facial, axillary, etc.).

Process Overview

The four primary steps in the lab processing of a drug test outcome are Accessioning, Screening, Extraction, and Confirmation.

Accessioning involves the initial evaluation of a sample into a lab’s system. This step includes confirming that the sample was sealed and sent correctly, assigning an arbitrary LAN (Laboratory Accessioning Number), and completing any further data input not provided by an electronic chain of custody system.

Screening allows for an initial rapid assessment for drugs of abuse. Although Screening is a budget-friendly method to exclude drug usage on most samples, a positive screen requires confirmation to be permissible in legal proceedings. Any samples that are potentially positive in Screening must undergo a secondary confirmation.

If a sample shows a potential positive in the Screening phase, additional hair is taken from the original specimen and set up for Extraction. At this stage, drugs are extracted from hair at a notably lower concentration compared to other methods (e.g., urine or oral fluid), which explains why hair drug screening is the most challenging method to execute.

Confirmation of any positive screening outcome is achieved via GC/MS, GC/MS/MS or LC/MS/MS. All potential positive samples are cleansed before confirmation as required. The entire lab sequence from Accessioning to Confirmation is evaluated under both the CAP (College of American Pathologists) Hair classification and the accreditation to ISO / IEC 17025 standards.

Advantages of hair drug testing:

  • Extensive detection window: Hair drug tests can identify drug use for up to 90 days, unlike urine tests which have a shorter detection window.
  • Challenging to manipulate: It is very difficult to deceive a hair drug test, providing more reliable results.
  • Offers historical insights: It can deliver a pattern of drug use over time, not just recent consumption.

Limitations:

  • Unable to detect recent use: It takes approximately 5-7 days for drugs to become detectable in hair.
  • Cost: Hair drug tests are usually more costly compared to other drug testing methods.
  • Variability in results: Factors like hair color and personal differences in hair growth can influence the concentration of drug metabolites in the hair.

Note: While often called "hair follicle tests", the analysis targets the hair strand, not the hair follicle under the scalp.

Why Hair Follicle Testing Beats Urine Testing

In Burns, OR, hair follicle testing stands superior to urine testing due to its extended detection window and accuracy. Unlike urine tests, which detect recent consumption, hair tests reveal drug use up to 90 days. This expanded timeframe provides a more comprehensive understanding of an individual's substance history, aiding employers and agencies in making informed choices.

Frequently Asked Questions

A hair follicle drug test analyzes a small sample of hair to detect a history of drug use over time. Because drug metabolites are incorporated into hair as it grows, this method can show patterns of use instead of just recent exposure. It is frequently used for legal and court requirements, long-term monitoring, and high-trust workforce screening.
Standard hair drug testing typically reflects drug use over approximately a 90-day period, based on the length of hair collected at the time of testing. Longer hair can sometimes reflect a longer time frame, and extremely short hair can reduce that window.
Hair drug testing commonly screens for marijuana/THC, cocaine, opiates/opioids, amphetamines/methamphetamines, and PCP. In many cases, additional expanded panels may be requested to include other substances.
Yes. If the donor's head hair is too short or unavailable, body hair may be collected as an alternative. The collector will document the source of the sample. This allows testing even for individuals with recently cut or shaved head hair.
Yes. Hair drug testing is commonly used in court, probation, custody, and compliance matters because the collection process follows a documented chain of custody and the analysis is performed by a certified laboratory. Results are provided in a form that can be reviewed by legal and administrative authorities.
Yes. Individuals, parents, attorneys, employers, and probation programs can all request hair drug testing. A doctor's order is not required. Results are confidential and released only to the authorized requesting party.
Hair testing provides a longer look-back period than urine testing, making it useful when you need to demonstrate ongoing abstinence or identify repeated/recent substance use patterns over time rather than just recent exposure. It is frequently selected for legal, compliance, and custody-related documentation.
A small section of hair is cut by a trained collector in a discreet, controlled manner. The sample is sealed, documented, and sent to the laboratory under established chain-of-custody procedures so that the results can be defended if they are ever challenged.
