Accredited Drug Testing provides comprehensive hair follicle drug tests in Baker City, Oregon. If you require drug or alcohol testing using hair samples, we are experts in this field, offering services across all cities nationwide. Generally, either 1.5 to 2 inches of hair from the head or body suffices. Our hair testing can screen for drugs, alcohol/ETG, or be tailored to other needs.

In recent times, hair follicle testing is increasingly preferred for drug screening. Employers, courts, and substance abuse specialists often opt for hair tests over urine tests. This method benefits from a longer detection span, typically up to 90 days, collected under supervision, making it highly reliable. Meanwhile, urine tests remain most accurate for detecting recent drug use within 5 days.

What it is, How it works

Hair testing is now recognized as a robust method for identifying drug and alcohol use. It offers long-term insights into alcohol and drug consumption by capturing biomarkers within the fibers of the growing hair strand. When taken close to the scalp, hair can reveal alcohol and drug use within a period of about 3 months. Hair is straightforward to collect, relatively resistant to tampering, and convenient to ship.

A 1.5-inch section consisting of about 200 hair strands (similar in diameter to a #2 pencil) from nearest to the scalp yields 100mg of hair, the optimal sample size for both screening and confirmation. For EtG, additional tests, and/or panels above 10, a sample weight of 150mg is advised. Using a jeweler’s scale for weighing the specimen is recommended. If scalp hair is not available, a comparable quantity of body hair can be used. References to head hair denote scalp hair exclusively. Body hair indicates all other varieties of hair (such as facial, axillary, etc.).

Process Overview

The laboratory processing of a drug test comprises four primary stages: Accessioning, Screening, Extraction, and Confirmation.

Accessioning includes the initial handling of a sample within a laboratory’s system. Tasks include ensuring that the sample was appropriately sealed and shipped, allocating a random LAN (Laboratory Accessioning Number), and completing additional data entry absent from an electronic chain of custody system.

Screening constitutes a preliminary quick check for drugs of abuse. Although Screening is a cost-efficient method to negate drug use for the majority of samples, a positive screen necessitates confirmation for courtroom admissibility. Any samples that test presumptive positive in Screening demand subsequent confirmation.

Should a sample appear presumptive positive during Screening, more hair is extracted from the original specimen and readied for Extraction. Here, drugs are extracted from hair at lower concentrations than in other techniques (e.g., urine or oral fluid), making hair drug screening the most challenging technique to carry out.

Confirmation of any presumptive positive screening result executes via GC/MS, GC/MS/MS, or LC/MS/MS. All samples that are presumptive positive undergo a wash prior to confirmation as necessary. The whole laboratory process from Accessioning to Confirmation undergoes review under the CAP (College of American Pathologists) Hair designation and the accreditation to ISO / IEC 17025 standards.

Advantages of hair drug testing:

  • Extended detection window: Hair drug tests can identify drug use for up to 90 days, as opposed to urine tests which offer a shorter detection range.
  • Challenge to deceive: It is exceedingly difficult to manipulate a hair drug test, enhancing result accuracy.
  • Historical data provision: It supplies a timeline of drug use over a period, not solely recent usage.

Limitations:

  • Inability to identify recent usage: Drugs become detectable in hair roughly 5-7 days following use.
  • Expense: Hair drug tests often cost more than alternative drug testing techniques.
  • Result variations: Variables like hair color and individual differences in hair growth may influence drug metabolite concentration in hair.

Note: Commonly cited as "hair follicle tests," the examination evaluates the hair strand instead of the scalp's hair follicle.

Frequently Asked Questions

A hair follicle drug test analyzes a small sample of hair to detect a history of drug use over time. Because drug metabolites are incorporated into hair as it grows, this method can show patterns of use instead of just recent exposure. It is frequently used for legal and court requirements, long-term monitoring, and high-trust workforce screening.
Standard hair drug testing typically reflects drug use over approximately a 90-day period, based on the length of hair collected at the time of testing. Longer hair can sometimes reflect a longer time frame, and extremely short hair can reduce that window.
Hair drug testing commonly screens for marijuana/THC, cocaine, opiates/opioids, amphetamines/methamphetamines, and PCP. In many cases, additional expanded panels may be requested to include other substances.
Yes. If the donor's head hair is too short or unavailable, body hair may be collected as an alternative. The collector will document the source of the sample. This allows testing even for individuals with recently cut or shaved head hair.
Yes. Hair drug testing is commonly used in court, probation, custody, and compliance matters because the collection process follows a documented chain of custody and the analysis is performed by a certified laboratory. Results are provided in a form that can be reviewed by legal and administrative authorities.
Yes. Individuals, parents, attorneys, employers, and probation programs can all request hair drug testing. A doctor's order is not required. Results are confidential and released only to the authorized requesting party.
Hair testing provides a longer look-back period than urine testing, making it useful when you need to demonstrate ongoing abstinence or identify repeated/recent substance use patterns over time rather than just recent exposure. It is frequently selected for legal, compliance, and custody-related documentation.
A small section of hair is cut by a trained collector in a discreet, controlled manner. The sample is sealed, documented, and sent to the laboratory under established chain-of-custody procedures so that the results can be defended if they are ever challenged.
